1.America
2.England
3.France
4.Germany
5.Greece
6.Rome
7.Russia
8.Spain
9.Denmark

9/24 = 0.375 = 37.5%

Basically that which is considered the western world by the worlds modern scholars, getting its name from the fact that its origins lay in the western end of the Eurasian supercontinent, as opposed to eastern culture, the culture originating from the supercontinents eastern end.

The argument that 'theres too many western civs' seems a little incorrect then if you are going to split only by east/west(and not sub categories) you can see that the majority lay in eastern civs, lol.

But if we break them down into regions:

Europe / Western (US Included): America, England, France, Germany, Greece, Rome, Russia, Spain, Denmark = 9/24 = 0.375 = 37.5%
Asia: China, India, Japan, Mongolia, Siam = 5/24 = 0.208 = 20.8%
Middle East (Egypt included): Arabia, Babylon, Egypt, Ottoman, Persia = 5/24 = 0.208 = 20.8%
Americas: Aztec, Inca, Iroquois = 3/24 = 0.125 = 12.5%
Africa: Songhai = 1/24 = 0.041 = 4.2%
Oceania: Polynesia = 1/24 = 0.041 = 4.2%

So by this account, the most civilizations are, by far, European.

If research were to be done they would find that there are a ton more of interesting civs outside of Europe, a couple of them has already been suggested in this very thread.
Of course, western civilization did kick a lot of ass, just like you said.

Totally agree with you: In fact the civs i'd most like to see are Majapahit, Zulu, Maya, Korea, Carthage, Ethiopia (after recently finding out about how much ass they kicked) and lastly, Portugal.

I would support Portugal having a naval UU because we need more naval UU's to counter England. Korea could have the Hwacha and Turtle ship (yay more naval UU's). It would be cool if the Zulu had the Kraal (kind of like a pasture, look it up) as a Unique Improvement because I like Unique Improvements and there isn't many of them. I pretty much agree with the Civ4 unique units / buildings for the Maya. Majapahit I don't know but hopefully they would have something to do with embarking/navy as their empire was spread across an archipelago.

I play a lot of TSL earth maps and this listing is influenced a lot by that: hence a lot of civs to fill up empty corners of the world, less in crowded areas like the Middle East and Europe.

Ability: Increased gold yield from trade routes over water depending on distance to capital. 50% greater generation of Merchants and +8 gold yield from Customs Houses.

Not sure about a UU or UB. Maybe a ship replacing the caravel that can defend embarked units on the same tile. UB could be a temple/culture thing.

Civ would play out as a pure commerce/diplomatic civ. Beeline to commerce and patronage policies. Spam trade missions with merchants. Earn a GG after UN voting.

What I was trying to say was that western culture is not the culture originating in the furthest west of the world (that'd be Inuit or Polynesian culture), just like eastern culture, that is the far east, is not the furthest east in the world (Again, that would be Inuit or Polynesian), I do recognize African, Mid-Eastern, Native American, Polynesian etc. cultural spheres as well.

The terms Western and Eastern Culture have little to do with global positioning. Western Culture as we know it has it's roots in Greece and Rome, and from there it was spread to the New World by Western European civilizations. Eastern Culture we think of as coming from Mesopotamia and filtering to North Africa through the Moors and up to the caucuses from the Turks/Seljuks. Far East is what we call China and Japan.

Of course those are ridiculously broad generalizations, but they tend to be used as comparison points. For example: In Eastern culture travelers were far more likely to rely on the hospitality of private individuals, whereas in the West it was less common for such hospitality to be either sought OR provided so far more inns and hostels would spring up along major thoroughfares.

In short the terms exist mostly to compare cultures one to another, not to describe global position.

This is what i was trying to say, you put it better. Though I tend to use the term mid-eastern where you use eastern, and eastern where you use far eastern.

Thanks. I think which one you use is just largely a product of your schooling and possibly your national origin. Still, just so long as we understand one another it all works out.

I think it would be fantastic to have a Gurkhas unit that would be able to move through mountains! We have helicopters after all ;)

Alright, this is my first post on the forum, and I must say it's great to be here. I'm a relatively new Civ player (January 2008). BTS was the first I've played and now CiV.

As for what civ/civs should be included, I believe that Indonesia, Korea, or Ethiopia should be considered for the next DLC. In addition, I have a question to ask the community (or at least whomever follows this thread). Which is more likely to happen, more of these DLCs or a full-blown expansion pack? Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the forums Ethos :goodjob:

I believe they will release more DLC, but I hope for a full fledged expansion pack. I don't know about Indonesia but Korea and Ethiopia would be very nice. By the way, is Abysinnia the actual name used by Ethiopians for their country or is it a European name for that area like Persia for Iran, West Indies for the Caribbean or Rhodesia?

Rumors of Korea abound!

If Korea is indeed the next DLC, I hope there is something interesting about them other than just another AI that has some type of advantage in war.

A simple spy unit would be nice in a patch ... I'd buy some DLC just for that one addition.

It has to have Kwacha or turtleship. However, a spy type unit should be added to the general game. We sure need something to give it more flavor, right now its like a bland meatloaf.
