What's the best game ever made? Except civilization?

here are my picks, no guarantee for completeness :)

RTS: C&C (the first one), Europa Universalis II, Dune 2
TBS: X-Com, Battle Isle, Master of Orion 2
Adventure: Monkey Island, Indy 3, Manic Mansion, basically the early Lucasfilm games
RPG: Baldur's Gate, KotoR
FPS: Doom, Duke Nukem 3D
Simulation: X-Wing and Tie Fighter, Wing Commander 2
Sports: the NHL Hockey series, Kick Off 2
Platformer: Rainbow Islands ;)
Arcade: Turrican

The combat System spoiled KotoR for me. It is equally far from being a Jedi Academy like adrenaline rush and a Baldur's Gate like tactical challenge. :(

My favourite game ever:

Red Baron! :D

It's a WW1 dog-fighting game, first released in 1990 and still awesome to this day. One of the first games I ever played. I spent so much time prowling the skies above the western front in my Sopwith Camel, back in the day. Nothing quite as exiting as trying to haul your almost dead plane back over to the friendly side of the trenches, with the pixelated scarlet tri-plane of the Red Baron himself bearing down on you! I still load it up every now and then, though my old joystick won't plug into this computer.

:goodjob: that sure was a great game, though personally I prefered the - even older - "Wings". nothing like having a jammed MG just when the enemy is bearing down on you :run:

Stacraft!

I'm sorry, but even civ just doesn't come close.

F-19 Stealth Fighter was another great one way back when. I used to love sneaking in over the Kola at night to hit a radar site or a sub pen, and then sneak out, while the Ruskies send out a thousand freakin MiGs after you; a race back to the JFK.

I remember red Baron! but my favorite however is still Wasteland, released in 86 for the commodore sixty four it enthraled me with its vivid descriptions of events, and surrel realism. The game engrossed me in its post apocalyptic south western united states with a world so beleiveable, and it didnt have single animation in the game!

Well, this is like asking which is the most beautiful woman in the world, there's no answer because everyone is biased towards the woman/game they love.

Well, my point is that such threads are pointless, thats all.

RTS- Rise of Nations. Blending all the new innovations of previous RTS games while adding the element of cities, streamlining resource gathering & trade. Advances of technology made for some wild game endings.

Flight- Red Baron. Advanced for it's time & harder than hell, I really did feel like a pilot, all the way down to the time I was shot down by a Zepplen...for the 300th time.

Sports- Tecmo Superbowl. Official enough to have real players & stats but arcade enough to make each game a blast. Season play is one of the most immersive aspects of the game. So much I would scour every player on my roster and my future opponent to see weakness, really feeling like a coach in the process. And planting QB's after they threw the ball was fricken awesome.

Runner Up: Pigskin footbrawl. One of the most tactical sports games still out there. Amount of brutailty and copious amounts of blood ensure this game will never be made again.

Simulation- Damn since I can't put the Civ series in here I'd have to say Command HQ (for mac, much better graphics). The fight for oil and airspace & multiple time periods in which to fight was intense. Using nukes to "make life easier" always in the back of my mind.

Arcade- Armor Alley had you flying a helicopter to "get to the other side" sounds easy? Hell no, you often found yourself playing a support role, leading daring pickup/ drop off missions, dueling it out with the ememy chopper and running for your life from SAMs. It's a shame I was never able to play it in multiplayer.
