Whats the best thing to do about Barbarians ?

I ussually use them to try and build up elite units for leaders down the road. Very early on, when you have very few units, barbarians can give them some combat experience without the whole declaring war proscess.

On higher difficulty levels, conserve troops by fortifying them on hill or forest tiles and let the barbs attack. This improves the odds. Only after getting veteran status, send them after the encampments. An alternative is to let the barbs roam to threaten enemy settlers.

On lower difficulty levels, players get a huge attack bonus against barbs so go after them.

A semi-exploit is "mining" barb camps, by clearing them for the 25 gold. Then move units out of the area and attack again after barbs respawn. This works in remote areas far from the other civs.

I had an small city on an island once with a barb camp just outside the borders. I got a massive barbarian activity warning and saw a ton of horsemen coming at the city.
I traded the city to the Romans (who had the biggest treasury next to mine).
They were poor next turn. :D

I use the barbs as a training ground. After a unti becomes elite I destroy the camp and mve the unit away. A barb camp will appear nearby and I move a regular unit in and wait until he gets to elite. Same thing over and over again. Until the late middle ages when it just takes too much time. :)

You should download the patch. This exploit won't be possible anymore. (Trading cities)

Yes I know. I should have put that it was with the 1.16 path that I did this. I havn't tried to trade cities with the new patch.

BTW I just came from reading your comment about Phillipe and his post count in the spell checker thread was funny.

I try and go after their camps, otherwise you'll have problems expanding your empire unless you bring reinforcements along with your settlers

place explorers in isolated, unpopulated areas around you civ. This will prevent barbarians from appering there.

 Sounds like you're describing Civ 2. With Civ 3 Settler Diarrhea fills in open tiles very quickly. Which I don't like.

Speaking of Barbarians, am I the only one who's irked by the fact that there is a Barbarian tribe designated as "Assyrian"? I mean, Assyria must be assumed to be included in the Babylonian civilization, since major Assyrian cities like Assur and Nineveh are found in the Babylonian city name list.

Similarly with the Sumerians - cities lik Ur, Uruk and Eridu made their first fame as centres of Sumerian civilization, even tho' they later was absorbed by Semitic Babylonians.

Another weird variant are the Shangians and the Zhou - named after Chinese dynasties!

Firaxis took the civs that didn' make Civ 3 and made some of them barbarian tribes, like the Assyrians and Mayans.

I usually go after them. This serves several purposes. I set level to Raging. By going after them, as long as I am able I rarely get the Massive Uprisings unless I am not aggressive enough in seeking them out. Second, gold for my coffers. Third, experience for my military. Fourth, they can cause losses against the other civs; sometimes I may also suffer some loss, but that's reasonable since it works both ways. Once I used Barbarians against an English Scout, I positioned troops so he walked into the Barbarian.

I use my troops for exploring early on so they are in the field to begin with. On occasion, I have paid the price, lost lots of gold a few times this way.

I'm perfectly aware of that, and have nothing against it. What irks me is that the Assyrians are obviously included both in the Babylonian civilization and as a Barbarian tribe.

Attack them! I'm positive that leaving those camps around lets the barbarians work themselves up into those massive uprisings. The minute I see a Barbarian appear on my frontier, I send out a unit to meet it. As units are generally successful against barbarians, by the time he finds the camp he may be elite. At the very least, you've prevented a massive uprising. I always play on Raging Barbarians and I get a massive uprising maybe once every five games. Plus 25 gold can get you a long way in the ancient era.

Also, for the Zhou comment, the Zhou were also a different ethnic group than the Han Chinese, who ruled most dynasties, excepting the Yuan (Mongol) and Qing (Manchu). They are not to be confused with the feudal Zhou dynasty, which was ruled by (mostly) Han warlords and a very weak central Emporer. The character for the Zhou people and for the last name of the Emporers are distinct, but in written English the words look the same.

It's stupid to keep barbarian camps besides your borders.I think it's not funny at all on deity and emperor to find yourself bankrupt couse a barbarian invasion :P. Just kill them all and do not forget that the comp on higher difficulty settings has a bonus vs barbs which u don't have( or so it seems to me) so u can forget about barbs doin' damage vs comp.

I chase down barbarian camps all the time and never give them time to build up to an uprising!

Maybe I am wrong but it seems to me that long established barbarian camps send out the hordes!

The advantage is your military is promoted to veteran and elite units...you make money from dispersing the camps and by actively engaging the barbarians your homelands are rarely disrupted by barbarians.

The best civilisation for this sort of war I've found to be the Aztecs...

In 1.17f if one barbarian camp had a massive uprising, they all did. I often saw 40-50 barbarian horsemen going against one city, which meant lots of promotions for my spearmen. Just need to build walls and keep three or four spearmen in town.

Don't know about 1.21f, we don't have a way to check anymore.

If one did, they all did. I would think it is still the same. At least, I have a couple of games where several went massive at the same time.

Just find out where their encampment is and destroy it. No more Barbarians. And do it as soon as you start seeings Barbs. The longer those camps exist, the more trouble they will be for you, since they generate new units periodically, and tend to join forces. The camps themselves are usually pretty easy to take out, since the Barbs tend to roam and not hang out around their base.

I would say leave them alone, then send your defensive units out to train against them, until all your units have veteran status.
