What's the EU?

The EU, economically, is really only good for poor countries.

Funny, but you may be right. When the ECSU and later EEC formed, all of its members were poor. Look, where they're now. To this day, membership in the EU has been beneficial for every country.

One day, my country will repay the money we've been given, and as the present old members helped us, we will help the countries that will join in the future.

In the end, everybody will benefit, and this is what it is all about.

^^Yes, I suppose. But the EU wasn't set up as a charity for Bulgarians. The EU should help everyone in it, all the time. All it's really doing now is just causing problems for the rich countries with immigration and economy and such-like, while the Bulgaria and Romanias of the EU are striking it lucky.

The EU doesnt really spend much on helping it's poorer regions anyway. It really doesnt add up to much when you compare it to the farming subsidy's

By far the biggest "winners" in the EU are farmers. And in particulair French farmers with old fashioned methods.

Other winners in the EU or the Euro zone are economically unstable countries who didn't have decent currency's before the introduction of the euro. For instance France (again) and Italy.

What the EU is? It's an intergovernmental institution to make treaties on stuff every member country can agree on. Basically its old fashioned European diplomacy institutionalised with a flag, anthem and other kinds of symbolism.

Italy is a winner economically? Are you nuts? Prices have gone sky-high in Italy; everyone hates the euro there. This is probably the same in France as well.

Prices went up everywhere. Mostly had to do with the market being self-regulated, and the shock of the introduction of a new currency meant that the consumers did not at first have time to form psychological connections to the new prices, and so opporunists could now sell at a considerably higher price, and then this tended to be stabilised.

If someone hates the euro they are free to leave the EU though; but i doubt it will happen :)

If they hate Euro, they're stupid, no offence. Euro is not responsible for the Italian inability to manage its own monetary policy. For decades, they only devaluated their currency every time they had a problem. Now, with Euro, this option disappeared and they found themselves in the economic reality, which is grim. But they can blame themselves and themselves only for that.

And I am not even mentioning the meanness of the Italian tradesmen who abused it for their own gain.

In fact since it is based mostly in land surface, most CAP subsidies are for people that doesnt need them at all , like large alimentary groups and... some noblemen.

For instance the Duchess of Alba received in 2004 1,800,000! €, the Duke of Westminster 650,000 € and Elizabeth II 800,000 € :shake:

It is calculated that the 80% of the farmers receive ony the 20% of the aids.

Agreed. Subsidies are completely unnecessary. CAP should be terminated, it is nothing more than a black hole in Europe's budget.

Every European thinks prices have gone sky-high with the introduction of the Euro.

But there is no point debating that the Euro is by far a superior currency to the Lira. The Lira was one the most unstable currency's in Europe with the highest inflation in Europe.

So Italian gain much more with this stable new currency than for instance the Germans or the Dutch, since we already had a stable and strong currency to begin with.

It is no wonder that the European Central Bank system is desgined almost like an exact copy of the German central Bank before the Euro.
