What's the largest army of Nukes you ever had?

That was on Civ2. The point is nukes were so much better then. Of course, the AIs had a tendency to use them on you if you let them.

He's referring to this, I think, although it was apparently just a random coincidence that you had exactly 42, which winds up being used as a joking non-answer a lot of times by Douglas Adams fans (sort of like answering "Mu" ('without') in Zen Buddhist koans).

I don't think I've ever built a single nuke, even in Civ2. I hadn't played a whole lot of Civ2 though, and it was exclusively MP IIRC with games ending before that, but I've never been inclined to build one in Civ4.

I see. I know Hitchiker's Guide but the reference escaped me  Well, that would have been a smart answer to the question (since you never ever ever have an 'army' of nukes, as other posters have brilliantly pointed out).

What do you mean? How many I stacked them or how many I built them? Anyway in one game I built about 30 nucelar weapons only because I got bored. I could have make a conquest victory before 2050 but with nukes it was more intresting. After that 4 tiles turned to desert in every turn.

EDIT: It was standart map and prince difficult.

Since civ 1 I am using nukes from time to time against huge naval stacks. No cleanup or rebuild of infrastructure necessary afterwards. In RB Epic4 it saved my butt sinking an amphibious SoD with 10 battleships, countless destroyers, 13 fully loaded transports & 5 carriers. Took me three nukes against SDI. Guess I went lucky there.
EDIT: As for the actually question. I don't pile them up. If I build them, I use them. So I guess I had around 4 to 5 max at the same time.

I like to rush 5-6 nukes and then vote in the no-nukes resolution ending up as the only one with nuclear weapons. I'm sure my negotiators start every meeting with "Our words are backed with NUCLEAR WEAPONS!". Not sure it has much effect really - but its nice to know you can unleash nuclear death at your enemies.

I have used them once en-masse in a depopulation attempt for a diplomatic victory. They didn't really do the job though - I think you need a lot more than 10 for this. It did help weaken them for a final push to domination, but I think the return on hammers was poor.

I started with Civ 4 playing on the lower difficulties, and was a bit reluctant to commit myself to war and ending up with a huge tech lead, and started stockpiling nukes. There have been times I'd be sitting on 5-10 nukes in some of my largest cities as well as 2 or 3 scattered in many smaller ones. Not reasonable, not necessary, but it was always a nice little insurance policy against aggressors :)
