Mostly standard, sometimes large. I do play from time to time on huge, but that requires peaceful gameplay from me.. my last geme on huge ended up whith some conquest and so many cities i couldn't remember to which i should pay attention (especially when coming back after break).

Also i would disagree that on maps large+ you have more space to explore. It seems that game alway put me one city space from other nation.. at least one. Also loyalty limits you from settling those juicy spots which large maps tend to offer.

Question to you guys: how to set map for korea??? I have trouble to get a hill with them in capitol and for first settler (really it's that bad).

"New" World Age makes the map have more hills.

Probably a large map for me...Don't really care for those tiny maps. Larger feels more immersive for me.

Plus with more Civs on the map there is more competition for winning the game.

Duel pangaea, 4-5 AI:s, no city states, emperor or above, no religious victory.

No ICS, easy to travel around the world, resources count, no endless city administration. And some dangerous aggression.

I usually go for large, occasionally trying huge or standard. Standard feels like it has just not quite enough space for me, I like settling and building a large empire. But huge never seems to make sense with epic speed (almost always play epic) i end up with too much unsettled land and so distant from neighbors that trade becomes impossible due to overwhelming barbs. Large usually gives me at least a cool island or two to discover and settle, which i love.

Standard, no idea why it defaults to small, small is quite close

I honestly think the devs balanced the game around a small map size. It's the map size where having a full governor cast (7 cities) and maybe 1-2 extra cities is enough to be a strong power, since about 8 cities takes up most of the space allotted to your civ (depending on spacing.) But 8-12 cities is what i think the devs envisioned as an average empire in civ6. That doesn't really fly on bigger maps. The lack of governors just kills me on large because I like my filthy communism bonuses.

And like others say, small is enough that you get a healthy helping of other civs in the game but you can reasonably go from start to finish in a compact amount of time- a few nights after work or a lazy saturday.

I play standard or large generally. I haven't played a huge map yet, but I figure domination wouldn't be very fun with such a massive map to conquer.

I'll hold back my vote because the options don't include Ynamp's largest Terra Maps. It's a completely different game when you have 20+ opponents and 37 CS.

I do think that my preference for Huge maps contributes to my disdain for Domination Victory. When I play with the intention of pursuing a Domination Victory, I typically choose a Small or Tiny map.

I haven't heard anyone claiming that they can consistently win at Deity on the largest Ynamp Terra maps at epic pace or longer against 20+ other civs and, say, 37 CS. Domination and religious are well-nigh on impossible without a lot of luck.
So, maybe the AI is good enough without being fully optimised yet, if you choose a tough enough challenge. :)
OTOH, there's dozens of good reasons not to play or like that type of game.

I prefer Large because my 6+ year old iMac won't handle Huge, let alone the Brobdinagian variants available in the Mods.

I always have 'personal victory conditions' in my head when I play in addition to the Game Victory conditions, and mine are almost always somewhat historical. Maps smaller than Large (and even that is marginal) just don't feel enough like a 'real' historical setting - not enough 'players' on the map for me.

Duel or Small seem much too much like a completely artificial situation: a 'Survivor' Island for Civ's instead of Yushies...

I've played 4 games on ludicrous sized maps (200x100) @ deity level + marathon speed and won (edit: domination victories) consistently. Not the largest Ynamp Terra maps you describe but close. I would like to play the map, but think the mod for that map size is broken. Do you have a larger map that will load?

As you said, religion is near impossible without the religion expanded mod. I played one game, devoted all my resources to holy sites and projects and founded the religion, only to have my army dispatched by a barb camp. Actually, come to think of it, I've played 5 games on ludicrous map sizes for an 80% success rate. I rage quit the 5th after the barbs eliminated the entirety of my army as I was headed to conquer civ #2.

Against how many civs and CS?
There can be huge differences between games on the largest (not nearest to largest) with 24+ civs and 37 CS, and games with 12 civs and fewer CS.
(And, again, there are dozens of perfectly valid reasons for not wanting to play these styles!)

I nearly always have as opponents:
Americas(5): Cree, US, Aztecs, Mapuche, Brazil.
Africa(5): Egypt, Nubia, Arabia, Kongo, Zulu.
Asia(5): China, Japan, India(Chandra), Korea, Genghis/Tomyris.
Oceania(2): Australia, Indonesia.
Europe(5): France/Spain, England/Scotland, Poland/Germany, Rome/Greece, Tamar/Cyrus.

With 37CS there's lots of competition for them, and there is quite a battle to get Wonders and Great People.

I just checked the archived save files and it looks like 24 civs and 37 city states. The difference is my games are ludicrous sized and pangea maps opposed to the supermassive Ynamp Terra. The dom victory is definitely doable.

In my experience, I find the challenging part of a domination victory on the 200x100 map to be turning the corner on the AI’s. If you can get out and conquer a couple of civs early enough I find you can snowball, advance through the tech/civics trees, and aggressively outpace the AI’s. The size of the map becomes less relevant as the 4-promotion (escort w/ battering ram) cavalry/helicopter corps and armies quickly move from one city to the next leading the tanks/modern armor to obliterate the ancient/medieval walls and conquer the city in 1 or at most 2 turns. Then on to the next...

The trick is to get to cav and tanks ASAP (beeline), significantly sooner than the AI’s research steel. If you do this on marathon speed there is no hope for the AI and the map size is by and large irrelevant.

I have 2 of the save files that I’ve archived if you’re interested. If you want even greater detail, I posted the Scythian game to the Stories and Let’s Play section back in September.

These are the mods I am subscribed to, and both saves load up with them all enabled:
Hellblazer’s world info interface
Larger map sizes
Production que
Religion expanded
Resourceful2
Show Yields
Tomatekh’s historical religions
TSL earth remastered

Great work! I didn't doubt that it could be done back then. And I'm really impressed you could do it without back-tracking
after any mistakes.

I'll pass on the offer of the saved games. I doubt that I could get all those mods working together now after all this time. Also, Ludicrous size on Ynamp hasn't worked for a long time now. I'm not sure a dom vic would be quite as easy in R&F after the loyalty systems kicked in.

Thanks. Ludicrous map sizes are where the fun is :). I'm presently tinkering around with a dom victory goal on ludicrous size @ standard speed in preparation for a livestream when GS comes out. Time certainly does fly @ standard.

My favorite is crowded Huge Continents on Deity, where I maximize the Civs and City-States. Stuff gets real in a hurry. Occasionally 5 Warriors show up on your doorstep on turn 15, so you better have a defending force or Game Over.
