When do you build your first settler?

Most of the time I dont build my first settler I go through the Liberty social policies and just get a settler from Citzenship and then if I have 500 gold by this time in the game might buy a settler. I wait till I have 5 or more citzens in my capital before I actully build a settler.

What about you? When to you build your first settler?

Now that you can find iron at bronze I like to have that and animal husbandry before I build a third city, just to get a clearer picture.

In Single Player I play the same as you and wait for collective rule. In MultiPlayer I try to sneak one in before collective rule if possible. What makes it possible is: A) not being swarmed by barbs B) and getting to pop 3 or 4 right around the time I finish the capital's Library. If at that point I can see I don't need to build any more archers for the time being, I'll sneak an extra settler in. It really does help to spread out extra fast in MP, cause spots tend to get gobbled up fast.
