Since Im religous it would seem the obvious choice as it also avoid the iritating anarcy period when switch governments nothing worse than having your government collapse

Commercial: the extra commerce due to reduced corruption is a benefit all game long, and you start with the Alphabet, which means you already know the first tier tech with the highest research cost giving you considerable early trading power. This allows an immediate minimal research rate towards Writing (more trading power down the road) while you save your money for upgrades, Worker buys and Tech trades. (Or you can do a quick research of Pottery first; England already knows both!) Knowing Alphabet usually gets the Commercial civ a quick start, and the reduced corruption allows it to maintain its momentum.
build roads fast, 1 turn anarchy, chariots to humble all opponents early... unbeatable combination in Civ 3...higher scores need roads & marketplaces to join your luxuries to keep people happy
don't bother building temples just expand and out-breed your opponents... let your units find all the goodie huts with no science expenditure and your numbers will keep ahead of everyone else in the middle age... by then you will be master of your world
I'm a religous guy. Those temples are a very good way to expand borders and gobble up resources that are around in the early game. It's also good for those Cathedrals that help me stay out of civil disorder and add even more culture.
I also like being able to switch out of Democracy for a quick war and not having to worry about the 5 turn anarchy.
Pretty much, I pick religous and switch around the second trait from game to game.
RELIGIOUS (coupled with industrious) makes for a very nice game. Well, actually anything coupled with religious makes for a very nice game. I am almost always religious, because I like happy people, and Industrious for . . . hmmm . . . Oh, wait, Industrious people, hehe, go me!!
This makes the EGYPTIANS!!!! Ironically, I have never used their UU, I just get my GA with Pyramids.
