I think it was Vox who did a video on lost nuclear weapons and you may be surprised to learn that quit a lot of atomic warheads got lost over the years. Maybe this case was particularly implausible, but such a warhead getting lost and people just forgetting about it over time is in principle realistic.

Yeah, world governments control over their weapons can often be terrifying/funny in their laxity. An example similar to the situation in Sum of All Fears is when the U.S. accidentally dropped a nuclear bomb off of Tybee Island, Georgia in the late 50's and never found it. However, whereas Clancy's U.S. & Israel governments basically forget they had a nuclear armed plane shot down over their own territory, the real U.S. gov as well as civilian groups have been quietly preforming radiation test in the waters surrounding Savannah for decades trying to pinpoint its location. Good thing too, since my family vacations on Tybee Island occasionally. :lol:
