What ?

Oh, ok... Now I understand...

The worst thing with Civ5's graphics is how lifeless the map is. Nearly no animation, cities are subpar and the improvement are just a horrible icon.

Sire, I am mortally wounded. How shall I go on?
I didn't say Civ 5 was perfect, there's a lot that bugs me about the game, but I think it's still a net win. Nor did I say that it's a better game than any of the others.
Civ 3 is my sentimental favourite: Caesar's annoying bowler hat notwithstanding
Civ 4 BTS is great, although I also exclusively play it as Rhye's of Civilization.
Civ 5 is far from perfect, and a disappointing sequel, but still much more playable than a lot of other games

I thought civ4 was the ugliest one, even if it was the best overall game (especially its multiplayer) as a game.

The question is, which game had the best sound effects?
I'm thinking civ2, although they all do well.

Best sound effects? Well, I don't have Civ 2, so I'll go with Civ 4.

Civ III definitely had the best music, especially in the Modern Era. Civ IV Medieval music is terrible.

Immoderator action: Thread violation for being 'On-Topic'

I like Civ 5. I can't go back after Hexes - hundreds of little irks, notwithstanding.

You do realize you can move in less directions with hexes?

Civ 4 with the Realism Invictus mod is the best Civ experience.

Can I have a link to the mod, please?

Caesar's bowler hat was awesome!

When you compare version verses era, Civ I has to be the greatest game of all time.

However if it come to playing a game today, Civ 4 (warlords) is the most playable game for me, BtS if ok, but I am not a big fan of corporations.

Man, avatar aside, I much prefer 4's modern AND medieval music. I went to the symphony sometime last year and they performed The Chairman Dances and I was like waiiiit I've heard this. Music is civ4 all the way.

The question is sound effects, from interface to combat etc. I still have memories of your artillery man yelling "Fire" before that barrage in civ2.

How do you pick your favorite mechwarrior game?
Mechwarrior is by Activision and therefore sucks. (well Guitar Hero is okay, but that's it)

This graph tells us that each civ is, to the public at large, better than the previous until civ5. The implications are striking--not only is civ5 significantly behind (no huuuge deal, right?), it is also behind the trend as well. Combine these two and it shows the failure of the project.

All four of the first Civilization games were really good games, with Civ3 being the one that was roughest around the edges (I understand why there were plenty of people who didn't care for it). I'm old enough to have been around and played each of them when they came out, and I thought each one improved upon its predecessor. Civ4 was the best of the group, as it combined an amazing Single Player experience with an equally deep and engrossing Multi Player setup. We still have a dozen PBEM games taking place right now at Realms Beyond for Civ4.

Civ5 was poorly designed and poorly programmed, and is rightfully getting killed in this poll. Beat more than 2:1 in votes by Civ2, which released in 1996, and entirely deserving of that result too.

I haven't played 1 or 2, so for me it's: 4...3.......5. Unfortunately I like hexes too much now to go back to 4. :( At least there's EU3. ;)

Never played Civ1 or Civ2 myself (before my time). Loved Civ3 in its time, love Civ4 even more now, apathetic towards Civ5.

I imagine a poll here is more likely to show a wider gap between Civ4 and Civ5 than if it were asked in the Civ5 forum (and it has been, many times over). The newest members are probably less likely to hang out in the off topic forum, so with a poll here you probably see a better representation of what the "old"/"core" fanbase for the Civ series thinks of Civ5. ;)

Boy am I ever late to the party. But I have to jump in with the Alpha Centauri crowd. That game is amazing. Civ II is my pick out of the list.

The only problem, being, of course, that the map is for the most part disgustingly bad.

They're making strides there. The map for Victoria 2 is fantastic, and the terrain and contouring got ported to EU3 with the last expansion. And there are some amazing mods out there that handle nothing but the map (Devlet-i Ali Osman for example).

I liked the feel of it a lot but the gameplay got a little boring and the multiplayer didn't have the capabilities that civ4 did, like rejoining if someone lagged out.

You can rejoin game but you need to be friend with at least one guy playing. I enjoyed civ II for a long period of time(offline). I played civ III but didnt like it. Civ IV was good in the beginning but even better at the end. But the SOD is what make the game so weird. Multiplayer games were fun but the SOD is what makes this game too unidimensional.

I agree that civ V has been released too fast. But it has great potential. I dreamed about hexes and 1up and now it's true. Perfect for multiplayer games, last patch let you to build a lot of things. It's harsh to compare a vanilla version with other fully expanded versions.

Civ V>Civ IV>Civ II>Civ I>Civ III

Civ 4 i just keep coming back to it. This is my 5th time coming back in tothe game.

Out of interest, have you attempted to give the game another try since the last patch, or was it curtains after your design proposal writeup? :)

I would contend that the overall bias here is probably towards Civ3 or 2 rather than Civ4.
