Hey

My brother wants a game console and he can't decide which one to get. Since I'll just play computer, I don't care either way. Maybe this forum of gamers can give him a hand. (and if this needs to be in All-Other-Games that's fine too) :)

He likes Arcade games (Sonic-ish), action/fighting, and first-person shooters. He's also on a budget, but can save for the newer stuff.

His choices:

Xbox 360
Pros: Halo series, Stranglehold
Cons: Moderately expensive

Wii
Pros: Good party games, plays Gamecube as well as Wii games
Cons: Expensive +++, Weird controller?

GameCube
Pros: Super Smash bros, Sonic, Cheap cheap cheap
Cons: Technology stagnant

-----------

Thank you! If you would please vote for your choice and then post your reasoning that would be great. Let the console wars begin... again! :)

What?!? The Wii is the least expensive of all the three consoles! And you didn't even mention the PS3 :)

If budget is the priority then get the Wii. The games are lacking though. The controller is not weird and works great.

For FPS games and arcade games you are probably best with a 360. Wii games are more "fun" (for me anyway) but there are going to be less of them.

I'd say buy the Wii- it's cheaper than the 360, and also plays GC games! Plus, the next Super Smash Bros. game is coming out sometime soon, too.

If the controller feels too weird, there's always the "Classic Controller", too, but I don't think the Wii controller should be too much of a problem to get used to (I thought it would be weired before I got one, too)

Plus don't buy anything owned by the bloody Microsoft monopoly. At least not more than you have to.

The Wii is cheaper than the xbox 360. I'd imagine that you'd have a hard time finding a new Gamecube but second hand ones can be picked up for very little. The "weird controller" is most definatly not a disadvantage, it's a lot of fun. The only reason I haven't bought one yet is that I'm waiting on a decent Star Wars game to come out for it. There is great potential for lightsaber battling with the unique controller

Well, I got my kids an XBOX 360 for christmas and just two nights ago we got the dreaded '3 red lights of death' which means its kaput - the good news is that its under a 1 year warranty. The phone call to their help line was quick and very efficient. They are basically going to fedex us a box to put the console in, mail it in and get a new one in the mail after that.

However, I was disappointed that the thing broke at just over 8 months after buying it brand new. Granted my kids played it a ton; but we kept it well ventilated and didnt enclose it or restrict its airflow in any way. My kids did have a bad habit of leaving it on all night after playing it and the techie did say that could contribute to the overheating problem.

Something to consider if you are planning on buying an xbox360.

I would suggest a Wii for what he wants. Unless he wants to play the latest and most awesome games with next next generation graphics.

Personally I would go for the XBox 360 as there are a number of interesting games coming out for it sooner or later.

Don't buy anything from the Nintendo or Sony monopoly either:mischief:
We have a 360, and are buying a third one because:
1. I accidently kicked it while it was running. Whoops....
2. This one just doesn't want to work.
We just have bad luck with game systems, because all the 360 owners I know havn't had any trouble with theirs. And the 360 has the better shooters.

Now that the first action games that were wholly developed on the wii are coming out, I've been impressed by its graphics. My friend had the new Metroid Prime and it looks really really good.

Nintendo have always made very childish games, whereas the Xbox has more grown up/serious games. So it depends how old he is, really. Anyone approaching/in their teens will want an Xbox 360...

If I were to buy one right now it would be a no brainier. With Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime: Corruption coming out soon the wii would take top spot. I also like the fact that it's cheaper than other consoles and is garnering alot of third party support.

Nintendo have always made the best games though. I'm over 30 so I don't care about the childishness. It's the gameplay that counts.

EDIT: I did suggest a 360 though. More FPS and arcade games.
