Why the PS4 will beat Xbox One

How's that Betamax player working out for you?

Technological superiority isn't dispositive as to market success.

Fair enough, but I didn't say that was the exclusive reason why PS4 would prevail, I said it was that in conjunction with several other reasons. A lower price tag + more exclusives + better online services + more powerful hardware to begin with are all big things.

I was kind of hoping someone knew more about these products than I did and could enlighten me as to the technical side of things, since I've never used either a PS3 or an X-Box, let alone their peripherals. But if you'd rather chuck a hissy-fit over a throwaway comment after misinterpreting it to begin with, be my guest.

Well, to answer your question, it would depend on the hardware and software used in each product. Presently, the Kinect, frustrating as it is, is leagues ahead of the Playstation's vibrator thing. To suggest that the next generation of PS products will somehow be awesome and amazing -- let alone use the same tech as the MS version -- is, to put it as politely as possible, a little bit far fetched.

Will the next version of the Kinect be built off of one of these platforms? Or will the next quantum leap require the next set of platforms?

Not quite sure what you mean?

From what I've seen, the base of the Kinect is solid enough to get to pretty much anything feasible with motion/voice control given enough iteration of the hardware and software.

What I'm hoping for within another generation is something that will uniquely identify me in the room (which is already does) and which will identify gestures such as touching any of my four fingers to my thumb. That gives me eight super-easy to do gestures which I can tie to media controls.

Seriously, imagine being able to instantly pause/unpause your tv simply by holding up your hand and touching your index finger and thumb together.

Thank you. Does MS develop the Kinect themselves, or through third-parties? I recall that Sony originally got into the console game after a deal they had to produce a console for somebody else - I think it was Atari, strangely enough - went sour.

I'm sure they use some 3rd party components and get 3rd parties to manufacture the thing, but I don't see why that matters; I don't think it's the right question to ask. Everyone uses 3rd parties for everything these days, and Microsoft are clearly not a manufacturer of anything, much less the cameras, lenses, microphones and so on that comprise the Kinect's hardware. I'm pretty sure they would use 3rd parties for the hardware. But as I said, that doesn't matter. Apple used 3rd party components and 3rd party manufacturers for the iPod and iPhone, too, but it would be hard to argue that those weren't a massive improvement over the standard MP3 player or dumbphone. It took a long time for anything to get close to the iPhone and iPod, so if Sony are playing catch-up (which they are) then it will be a long time before they can compete with the Kinect 2.0. Especially when motion sensors are still very much in their infancy: Microsoft now think that their product is ready for prime time, since they are now sticking one in everyone's living rooms. Sony, OTOH, clearly don't think their own product is ready for prime time, since they are merely sticking one in a bullet point at the bottom of a powerpoint presentation.

To answer your question, no, it wouldn't depend on who developed the technology. It would depend on the technology.

Sony tried to partner with Nintendo, the breakdown of that collaboration gave the world the PSone.

No. I'm saying just as Blu ray won because blu-ray players were simply better hardware than HD-DVD's, PS4 will prevail over Xbox1 because the PS4 has better hardware.

For your information, since the end of SNES/Genesis era, the console who sold the most units was the least powerful of it's generation.

PS4 to be launched on 11.15 in USA and 11.29 Europe/Latin America. Xbox One to be released in 13 countries on 11.22

"they could well be the same technology entirely"

They could be. You're not going to get anything revolutionary out of either product. They cost a hundred bucks and are using technology we've had for years. Forcing the Kinect on the Xbox One users isn't going to make it any more popular than it is now. At least Sony made the smart move and left it out to undercut prices.

I actually think the launch titles for xb1 are a little better despite the ps4 having more of them, all the same I pre ordered the ps4 because it was cheaper and I had a better overall experience the Ps3 than I did with the 360 in the previous generation.

The Kinect costs several times more than the PS eye to manufacture.

That doesn't mean anything, as Nintendo has taught us. The components in the Wii U cost more for them to make and distribute than the price they're selling it for, yet they're struggling to even make it relevant.

As long as the average person finds the total experience to be better on the PS4, they'll go for it, which frankly I think will be the case based on what we've seen thus far.

Thinking back on most other consoles, the launch games are soon forgotten as 80% a rushed, and quickly supposed as developers have more time with the consoles.
