I read the complete Sherlock Homes once, it's 1,221 pages long took me four months to finish it Tkae me about a week during the summer. SO sherlock is my vote.
I cannot choose. M. Poirot has been a favorite of mine, ever since I started reading crime novels. Agatha Christie also wrote many other great novels - let's not forget Ms Marple
Voted for Poirot here - though Holmes is great reading. The two are different somewhat, both from the authors' styles and of course the characters.
As for filmatization: I saw Peter Ustinov as M. Poirot this Christmas, and that was a disappointing performance. David Suchet fitted much more to how I imagined Poirot, even though he had to gain a lot of weight and got some health problems because of that iirc.
Dont remember if Holmes's adventures were filmed, cant say I ve seen any, but there might have been some old rolls in black and white....

There have been well over 200 Sherlock Holmes movies - he is the most portrayed character in the history of film - another reason why he's just that bit better than Poirot.
