Which unit do you think is the most unless?

The Cruise Missile is one of those units that's kind of "iffy" for me. If I find myself deadlocked in land operations to where my ground forces are getting pummeled, I'll send in a couple of 'em to take out the annoyance. They're also pretty good when combined with Paratroopers for quickly taking cities (though they don't pack the punch of a Nuke, they don't leave any messes I'll need to clean up later). Except for those 2 situations (and maybe the occasional stack of ships that I can't quite reach with my fleet), I don't bother with them a whole lot.

I don't think I've ever built a Howitzer. It's too slow for my (lack of) patience. :)

Helicopters I actually find more useful than other air units at sea. Since they don't run out of fuel, and because they can see Subs, I'll sometimes build a few to patrol an especially dangerous stretch of ocean. On land, however, their performance is less than desirable, and a Fighter or Bomber does a better job.

Howitzers are city busters. One turn (with railroad to city) attack, then retreat. If you have enough vet. howitzers, you can take any city without leaving your howies open to counter-attack.

Units I never build:
Aegis, Alpine troops, Archers, Battleship, Bombers, Cannons, Catapult, Cruse missile, Crusaders, Draggons, Elephants, Explorers, Fighter, Helicopter, Ironclad, Knights, Marines, Nukes, Paratroopers, Partisans, Stealth Bombers, Stealth fighters, Submarine, and Warriors.

Favorite all around unit: Mech. Infantry. Decent Attack, High defense, good movement. Stack with Howitzers for a good time. Attack With howitzers, Defend with Mech.

Generally, I build Phalanx, which upgrade to musketeers, to riflemen. I always build Leo's, so I don't ever need to replace my phalanx. I've never been much of a air power or water power. I like Stealth in principle, but by the time I get it, I don't need much for military anymore. That seems to be my biggest kick in the pants: once I get the techs to build the real hoss military units, I don't really need them. I've found the more I play this game, the more I buy up other civs with dips/spies. I rarley build up much military at all. Techs and money are, I've found, the keys to sucess in this game.

Time to step up to the next level of difficulty. :D

I've just begun on deity in the last month or so, but games take me forever to complete. I just bought a hose and am in the process of moving. It tends to eat up your free time...

I shan't claim to've been a very good Civ2, altho I did beat it at Deity a few times. Units I more or less never built:

Warrior: Very weak and Phalanx comes so soon. I somehow never found early-game Military Police that necesary in the early game anyway.

Archer, Legion, Catapult and Cannon: Hated one-move attackers in Civ2. Don't really know why - I use Swordsmen and Medievals alot in Civ3. When I think about it, the lack of instant stack death in Civ3 probably is what makes the difference. (Artillery was another kettle of fish, since the AI by then had the courtesy to build railroads for me to attack on.)

Chariot: Somewhy, I always researched Polytheism before The Wheel.

Fanatic: Never ever used Fundamentalism, so naturally I never built any Fanatics.

Partisans: Almost never built, but of course happily used when given by city captures.

Marines: Since one could usually land Cavalry or Armor next to the city and take it the same turn, Marines, not being much use any subsequent land fighting, always seemed like a poor investment.

Cruise Missile: Didn't like the one use only aspect.

If you want to play with the more advanced units and have a more "modern' game for most of the game, lower the "tech paradigm" number in rules.txt from 10 to something else. Advances come faster and you get the "higher" techs sooner and get to play with them longer.

Helicopters aren't all that bad, i use them to capture cities that have no rail or road leading to them and are about 6 squares from yuor nearest other city. Thats all they are good for really
