Which unit do you think is the most unless?

Units that I rarely build:
Cruize missiles
Fighters
Bombers
Paratroopers
Marienes
Chariot
Crusaders
Warrior
Subs
Aircraft Carriers
Destroyers
Frigates
Galleons
Cruiser
Ageis Cruiser

As you can see...most of my games are early era and I don't strive for air or water superitory. ;) That could be why I suck so much. :D

I would say, in the following order:

1. Warriors: Only useful against other warriors. A stiff gust of wind will blow them over.

2. Explorers: Never send an explorer to do an armed man's job.

3. Horses & chariotts; defense = nil. I rarely if ever build either of these, though when I get them from goody huts I use them extensively (since there's no cost to me).

4. Destroyers: The kamikazes of the navy. If your enemy has triremes then Destroyers work, but otherwise you might as well wait til Cruiser or Battleship technology come along. To fill in what I see as an annoying hole in naval technology in the game, I created a coastal raider unit that shows up with the Trade technology that has some punch to it. Frequently this unit can trash Destroyers.

I like archers in the early stages of the game; they attack well and if given a little defense leverage (hill, forest, mountain, fortress, etc.) have lasting value.

Hahaha!

I think every military unit cept' warrior, crusader and diplomat is crap. I use the warrior to keep my population happy (only on deity) and the crusader is the only unit I use to attack.

I never use any defense in my cities unless I get a NONE from a hut or I get partisans when barbs capture my cities. The AI is no problem since I always hunt them down in the begíning. Barbs are a small problem and when they capture one of my cities I just bribe it back for some gold (size 1 is like 37 gold, hahaha)

You'd be mincemeat in an MP game, methinks... :D ;) Just find you before monotheism, et voila! conquest!

ren is right. Howitzers and tanks, with spies, are the way to go. While cruise missiles are worthless. who wants an expensive, one shot weapon. But you all underrate the warrior unit. besides being the only unit avail in the begining, its a cheap scout, and at diety level, a cheap way to supress unhappiness. AND, each one is a potential Rifleman via mike's chapel.

Cruise missiles are the most useless, hands down. Stealth bombers, stealth fighters, bombers, howitzers, and sometimes armor are better and can be reused.

I don't know why so many of you guys hate explorers. I use them constantly and with them I can cover ground rapidly. In case I encounter an AI civ, I can get my explorer out of the way really quickly. The 'treat all terrain as road' thing is real useful for hills, forests and such, which I get frustrated over normal 2 movement units. As soon as I can find some good land, I just move in my settlers, or if I find another civ which I'm at war with, I can better pinpoint the best locations for attack. But maybe that's just because I love exploring, colonizing, etc. :)

Perhaps it's cuz I play at Warlord/Prince.

I would like to say that just about all units have a use at some stage in my game plan including cruse missiles I find them handy in taking hard to get cities or fortresses where I loose to many howitzers marines when I need to take an Island and am ahead in tec

...I suspect you really mean Leonardo's Workshop, not Mike's Chapel...

I'd say the most useless units are chariots in the beginning and the missles in the end-game. The chariots are useless and the missles suck up production but don't give out enough to balance the worth of it. The nukes are just irritating, but satisfying when I decide to rid the world of everything, and just watch mushroom clouds go up all over the neighboring civilizations' cities. (Darn the SDI defence improvements though!) :king:

Chariots are pretty bad, but I've always thought cruise missles were pretty bad...it's like, "hey, I spent 100 shields to kill your rifleman unit!"

It's pretty sad.

I don't agree

The computer likes to cheat with the ability of it's units to absorb attacks ie; one rifle unit managed to hold out against an assault by 3 tank units in an unfortified city. The reason of course was that the computer was trying to build a wonder of the world in that city and was one turn away from completion. 1 tank, ok... but 3? Everyone was a Veteran.

I had saved so I tried it again and got the same result. For some reason (maybe higher attack factor) the cruise missile blows the riflemen away, every time.

They are expensive, but they are useful against "hard" targets that would otherwise eat up your units.

Before you get missiles, the sub is next to useless. The reason is that the computer is so "darn good at guessing" where your unit is. It also has a move of but 3 (assuming you don't own Magellan's Expedition) which means you rarely get away after your attack. It becomes an inexpensive way to move missiles across the water when you get them. Carriers can hold as many but carriers are more expensive to build.

I didn't like the ADM values fo subs giveing them I think about 9-10 for movement and giving them more attack cant remember if I changed defence

Ironically for me it's the nuclear missile simply because I cannot bear to use it at all. There's all the nuclear fallout to clean up - a sure shortcut to death by heating.

At least I sometimes use the cruise missile. In the end game in Democracy I can use it to keep enemy cities in check - the once-only use means there is no additional unhappiness compared to the other air units. With the high production rate at this stage of the game, it's one missile per turn.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned these useless lamers. I take them when huts give them to me, and explore with them, but I'd _never_ build them. Even when veterans, they can't defeat anything other than warriors. However, as an early game fan I just love knights - legions on skates! As as for the negative comments on marines - my effort at GOTM has been rescued by these guys so don't knock them! (However, I was glad of Artillary when it arrived!):scan:

They are the cheapest fast unit. You can explore with them, can kill things with them and aren't too expensive to lose. Explorers are expensive and I get tired of the cannibals eating them.
