I heard rumours of an 'XP - box' that was supposed to be supplied in 7 so you could still run your old games, while allowing MS to be more flexible in their OS architecture.

Does anyone know anything about this?

If you install 7 64 bit, to enable greater memory access, do you have to get 64 bit copies of all the other software, like Office, etc?

It's just a free (once you buy Windows 7) VM of XP, only available in the Pro versions of 7. Not really meant for gaming, I can't recall if there's a functional version of DX9.

Office 10 is coming with a 64-bit version... it's up to the developer on individual pieces of software. (including office)

You have 6 gigs of memory. I'm not sure why you're even including XP in the discussion.

edit: anyone who voted XP after seeing "6 gigs of RAM" doesn't know what they're talking about.

I hate XP, and dont ever want to go back. Its just so fat and ugly. And to be honest, I only liked Vista for its looks.

Well I just got my first x64 system (I used to have XP x32) and I still run all my old programs on Seven x64 (after I upgraded from Vista) that I did on XP x32 like Office '07, Civ4, The Sims, Kaspersky Virus Protection, etc. etc. and they all work fine. But instead of being installed into the x64's Program Files, they're installed into a folder called Program Files (x86), which I imagine makes it run the program like it was on a x32 system. So my theory is, if anything, an x64 system is a lot better than x32, no matter what anybody says. x64's are faster and just better! But it has to an HP or Gateway, they are the best. Or at least HP is.

It runs pretty quickly, but only after it starts up fully, which takes a good 5-10 minutes.

Eh? Something's rotten with your install. For me it boots faster than either XP or Vista did.

maybe. but its the release candidate, and i dont feel like getting to the bottom of it. It works, its nice, so its good enough for me. When its completely released in a few weeks I'll probably buy myself a copy (even though its probably not different than the RC).

It RTMed a while ago (I wanna say a week), but general availability isn't until October.

No, although 64-bit apps will run faster.

But you do need 64-bit drivers. So if you have an antiquated piece of hardware that requires a special driver which is no longer supported you may be out of luck. However, any driver that has been upgraded for Vista or WIndows 7 will likely have a 64-bit counterpart, unlike 64-bit XP.

never tried 7
vista is much better than XP, provided that your PC is fast enough
performance drop over time much faster on XP than in Vista

i never really felt xp or vista were that bad, although i have had the misfortune of using ME so anything is good after that
