While We Wait: Part 2

I mean anarchy in the sense that there is no government, not in the sense that people go around whacking others because they can, and brutal gang warfare and violence everywhere.

And I mean in the sense that what you call government and what I call government must be different, because I consider basic levels of organization to be government, so even that "gang warfare" you mentioned isn't anarchy, because there is someone to dispense juicy juicy authority.

@Bird - Thanks!

On the BirdNES cultures:

Interesting trend here. I have been toying with a primitive, forever illiterate culture with no centralization and uninspired mythology that will be a military annoyance and then fade into the obscurity of a conquered and bastardized race.

I generally agree with the interpretation of anarchy as reduction of all power down to the individual level... which is why it's such a damn stupid system, because something like that would obviously never last (even a day).

Anarchy isn't a system - it's the lack of it.

I speak of the theoretical anarchy. We generally get along, and are for the most part unwilling to go through the trouble of killing each other outside of meta-wars.

A lack of a system remains a system in and of itself because it is within the set of systems; zero is still a number, a black hole is still within space-time despite destroying it, atheists can still be fundamentalist zealots motivated by a spiritual cause, so on.

I speak of the theoretical anarchy. We generally get along, and are for the most part unwilling to go through the trouble of killing each other outside of meta-wars.

What, NOOOO!!!

I wanted you to start a super pious religious movement, which i, in a moment of weakness would adopt but then bastardize with my intense greed.

NOOOO!!!

Oh well, you can still do that after my Treasure Army enslaves your people and loots your land.;)

I do agree with the me, das, Lightfang, darkening at the peripheral + other indo-european players.

I'm thinking then Iggy+Littleboots+Alex+other American/Asian cultures in an Ameroasian cradle

And finally a AfroCeltic cradle. Just cause you know 3 players will want Celtic and someones gonna want an African-like nation.

Maybe?

I like the quote, but what's the bearing. I know that anarchy doesn't work in the real world, but we seem to do fine here without any real central authority. I know that Thunderfall runs the site, and all that, but in our community the only real government is occasional moderation, our own opinions, and our fear of being shunned by our peers.

The fear of being shunned by our peers really isn't as strong as you would think :p

The reason semi-anarchy works here is because there would be little to no gain in doing so. However, in the real world, suppose you start eyeing your neighbor's blender and his car and his tv...

What do you gain from spam?

Question: is your everyday life really much different in that regard? No? Does that make Canada an anarchy? :p

Most modern governments likewise don't do much in the terms of direct and immediately visible interference in people's everyday lives. Social programmes are equivalential to site improvements.

There are lots of police where I live, and I live(d) in the territorial capital, so I can't say that that's the place for me. I do know that some people would have probably killed me or stolen all of my stuff were it not for the law and its enforcement.

Yes, but that's a solely proportional matter, isn't it? We do have (forum) moderators; they're equivalential; had there been more people and a higher "crime rate" around here, there would've also been more moderators.

We're more a libertarian territory of an Empire

Sort of. More like foederati or cossacks, only not nearly as useful. ;)

And not quite so prone to raiding our host empire's territory outside of OT. Which doesn't count anyway. :p

In the frontier of Canada, guns don't enforce the law, they are the law? :p

Seriously, where on earth do you live that being murdered and robbed is a serious threat.
