While We Wait: The Next Generation

It has been a long time - I think almost exactly a year - since I was around here. I've got a little bit of free time these days, so I thought I'd stop by to say hello and see how things are doing. I haven't even had time to lurk that much in the last year! Anyway, seems like there are some pretty creative NESes going on right now... and all the good players/writers I remember are still around. Sekai, obviously, is long past and beyond undead resurrection. But maybe I'll make something new in the near future. Anyway... hello!

No, Sekai can still be Resurrected. Look at one of the longest running NESes, LINES: it has huge periods of hiatus!

Hello kkmo, you brought something different to NESing, please come back!

kkmo, I just looked over your NES and holy "woolly" it is a mammoth of a thing. That is something I would definitely want to see return, even though I wasn't part of its initial jump off.
Moderator Action: And you invoked the autocensor because? I filled it in with something appropriate.

Hi kkmo! We've been missing you, well, me, at least. Your NES was one of my favorites, I was very hurt when it ended. :p I hope your are returning for good.

Oh, and it can be still be resurrected. My participation, however, isn't that guaranteed.

Towards the end he kind of spoiled everything that was going to happen in my conflict with that lich guy. :p That kind of messed up the whole "reviving" thing for me since I know what's going to happen.

Hey all, thanks for the welcoming return. Its good to see everyone. :)

Bringing Sekai back would be nice. But, Sekai relies on the players, of course. I don't know how many people would be around to play again. It would be difficult to just resurrect it and have big chunks missing from the world. I suppose I could turn some of those kingdoms into NPCs, but what if a new player wants to come in with a new kingdom, and finds that there is not really any room? I can't just remove kingdoms, because the game relied heavily on each kingdom's existence through story-telling. Ninja Dude, I could always wave a magic wand and change that fate. ;) Also, Sekai is pretty demanding for all parties involved. I guess once we got into the swing of things, it was a lot easier for everyone. I have a special liking to Sekai, and I had a lot of fun GMing that NES here, mainly because all of you were really good at stories and interaction. Another huge problem is that I lost all of my original map files. I could attempt to rebuild with the maps floating around the original threads, but even then, I had a massive map of the entire world beyond Sekai itself, that is now missing (I had to do a harddrive cleansing a while back, ugh). So, while I could rebuild the map we all played in, getting the overall map of the big border empires would be a challenge - the only one I can find right now is incredibly zoomed out in the OOC thread.

I'm trying to think of other fantasy settings we could have a NES within, maybe even with different rules. But everything I seem to think of does not really compare to the original Sekai. We had solid rules, and we had begun to develop our own world and lore. I even remember the growing tavern "mini game".

Who all is still around, and game, anyway?

EDIT: Another thing is time. I will have to seriously consider how much time I have, because if I start up Sekai again, I don't want to have to end it so soon again. It is for this reason that perhaps a less time consuming fantasy game could be started (a completely different breed) that could tie into Sekai in the future.

Just to show interest and support to kkmo, Sekai is (or was) quite interesting NES, to read atleast.

Edit: 777th POST

I'd love to see you wave a magic wand and make all of the terrible liches, zombies, and maybe just one of the dragons go away ;)

But yeah, I would like to see it revived. It is weird looking at my old posts from the past and seeing how I NESed back then. I would gladly take up the reigns of my goblin kingdom with more experiance now under my belt. :D However, it sounds like rebuilding the map would be difficult. :/ If you can and you had enough time to run Sekai once more, I would be elated. If you can't rebuild the map but you launch something new, I will try my best to help create a world as richly detailed as Sekai.

Well, I at least want to try to rebuild Sekai. No point in starting a new world, when we had such an interesting one developing back then. I can write about my progress here, and get help from you all. :) And then when the time comes, maybe we can start playing again! But I want to try to make things a bit easier on myself this time around (though, as I've said, near the end when I got the hang of updating and stuff, it was a lot easier).

So right now, I want to piece together what was going on where we left off (with every single player). This is actually a gargantuan task. Here is some of what I have compiled. I know there is more, so please add on to this list and help me...! Even if we can't start playing right away, we can at least get the pieces together. If we do start playing again, I will probably start fresh quests/storylines, and provide closure for the ones that were going on at the time.

And, I will attempt a grand reconstruction of Sekai's geography. We'll see what happens.

Stories/Quests that were in progress:

  • The Orcish Kingdom of Zalask was enslaving merfolk to use as slaves for construction of a massive armada. This was revealed to the kingdom of Malthen, Zalask's closest neighbor, by the spy/assassin group Scimitar.
  • The Goblin Kingdom of Glotrith had employed the services of Kodo the Red, a ferocious, massive dragon, in exchange for an agreement to attack Xal'Amul, the Undead desert kingdom controlled by the necromancer Xalas.
  • flyingchicken's chaotic party had discovered an encampment of Lokish Lizardmen and killed all of them (right?).
  • Xal'Amul was launching invasions out of the desert in the Xal'Amul War of Aggression. However, the advancing armies on the goblin lands were halted by the addition of Kodo the Red to the Goblin front lines.
  • Dwarvish Dorovel was being threatened by Orcish raids, but they were put to a stop. Now Dorovel vows revenge against the unorganized barbaric encampments.
  • Du Farthen az Kurlan has discovered the existence of shapeshifters, whose intentions and origins are unknown. They have not extended out of a small area, but any who approach this area are killed by what seem to be liquifying human masses, that can turn their limbs into axes or any sort of weapon - a truly horrific discovery.
  • Xalas the Necromancer, the primary cause behind the War of Undead Aggression, is currently in a pickle regarding the entry of Kodo the Red into the war.
  • The seafaring city-state of Venetia is talking to Malthen about what to do about the massive Zalask armada being constructed, and the illegal capturing and selling of merfolk as slaves.
  • The Druids of the Maedaray Steppes have recently signed an agreement with Malthen, in which Malthen agrees to not expand into their territory / in exchange for protection.
  • Shiv the Eight-Legged is still at large (I can't remember... Selot never slayed her, though, I'm pretty sure).

What else?

And yeah, Ninjadude, its weird that we have all grown for the last year in interesting ways - I haven't been NESing, but I have been writing some fantasy/sci-fi stories in a notebook that is getting full. If we can start this up again, it will indeed be cool to see how everyone plays this time around. And hopefully we can also get some more character sketches from flyingchicken. ;)

There aren't many loose ends for Dorovel right now, other than annoyance towards Glors. Also, there's the two adventurers we kicked out/sent off on an expedition, but they're basically free to do what they wish.

kkmo, I believe we're past that and are gonna follow a bunch of dark elves to kill us some more lizardfolk. Ichthys is still looking for the ULTIMATE POWAH he left behind before he got his stasis-induced amnesia which was tied to the last Age somehow (though I forgot what and where exactly I put his backstory).

As for sketches, I don't know where I put those either! Maybe forum-searching for "SEKAI" will help. (Goes off to do just that)

Has NES chat changed from the never-ending-stories.tk? I'm getting a rather odd message every time i try to log in
