Story:

The Civil War has just ended, and the defeated Confederate soldiers return home to Texas. But at the same time Yankee carpetbaggers were also descending on the vulnerable state, stagecoaches have just started running to Texas and the United States Cavalry have increase their presence in Texas. The border town of Whitethorne has seen enormous growth in both confederate soldiers and Mexicans, likewise the US Cavalry moved closer to Whitethorne and began to monitor the tension, especially more now with the Yankee carpetbaggers arriving by the day through the stage coach. The stage is set for an explosive showdown, will you survive in the Wild West?

The Premise: This is going to be a story based NES. Players will make one character and choose what they want that character to be/do through stories. I am basing this a lot on EQ's NES Just Business. I will try to update about once a week in newspaper format about what's been going on in and around town. We are going for John Wayne or Clint Eastwood style realism, so that there can be lots of gunslinging and bank heists, etc. to get that Wild West feel.

Characters:

The only stats will be character names and their job, and any people they have working for them. This will merely be for reference for when I write updates and when players write their stories. Players can make their character have any job, from banker, to barber, to homesteader, to local sheriff.

Please note: If someone is already the sheriff or barber/doctor or mayor, or any of the business owners, unless its a partnership, then I would prefer others choose a different career for their character.

DO NOT POST.

The Town.

Whitethorne was a struggling boarder town before the war, barely scraping by. When the war ended, soldiers from both sides collected their final pay, and headed west to start a new life. Some settled down in and around the small south western Texas boarder town of Whitethorne. Now the town's population has exploded to over 400 people.

With the sudden influx of rich northerners looking to exploit cheap land and disgruntled soldiers, the threat of Mexican bandit and Apache raids, tensions in town ran high. The US Army had decided it was time to step in and help control the situation. A small cavalry garrison of 250 soldiers was established five miles east of town. They regularly patrolled the surrounding countryside, but left the actual town alone, unless the sheriff needed their assistance.

The town around the city was good for ranching. The chances to make good money by driving giant herds was very appealing to some. Others decided to head into town, start up their own small business. Still others thought they could make money through more nefarious means. All in all, the town is thriving, but danger could lurk around any corner.

The Map:

Key:
1= livery
2= saloon (2 stories, ground floor saloon, upstairs hotel/brothel)
3= hotel (3 story hotel)
4= stage coach station and barn

7= saloon (1 story saloon)

*The broken lines indicate doors. Will come in handy when writing stories, you can explain which exit a character used to escape from the sheriff and other things.

This is the map of "downtown" Whitethorne. Only main street and the key commercial and government buildings are on the map. In the bottom right hand corner is the beginnings of the residential area of town, but only a very small portion of it. Most of the people live further out from town, however, so the actual population of the town isn't that large.

I reserve the position of Captain and commandant of the fort.

Finally I can leave and get food for my wife. And maybe the newborn too.... nah, she has her own food. Well see you in a bit for a more detailed history of the captain.

I'll join.

Character Concept: A crook whose primary objective in life is to gain enough glory to make a permanent reputation for himself in history- and getting away with big heists in the Wild West is a way to do so.

We need doors... and windows to throw people through!

Brown line = door

blue line = window?

Kapeshe!?

----------------

Oh, and I am the blacksmith, co0-co0-cu-shoo!

Well... you can just assume there's windows on each side of the building to throw people out of, and the hotel is 3 stories high, number 2 saloon is actually a saloon with an upstairs hotel area/brothel. Number 7 is just a regular 1 story saloon. Forgot to put that in. Will edit it in now.

Also, would like people to make character names and short bios if they can.

Mr Smith :p

Your absolute steriotypical Smithy.. no surprises here.. yet

By the way, where are the actual residential areas? There's one hotel, but presumably not everyone lives there.

Name: John Gun (renamed himself before moving)
Short Bio: Lived in the former CSA, with his house about 1/3 on the Virginian border and 2/3 in West Virginia. Constantly desired glory, but was too young during the American "civil war". Having grown up now (and not seeing a good European war) he takes what he sees as the one remaining path to glory...

As far as my character knows, roughly how many people are in jail?

Anyway Luckymoose, the Crimean War was still going when the American "civil war" ended.

Well Charles, most ranchers wouldn't live in town but on their ranch.

As for people in jail, the town has been suspiciously peaceful as of late, and there are no people in jail right now. That could all change any day now...

And NWG3 and LM, Crimen war ended in 1856, it is now 1867 (2 years after the civil war). No more need to argue.

The Civil War has just ended

I don't mind that being changed, but I am not going to pretend Luckymoose is right. The American Civil War was 1861-1865, while the Crimean War was 1854-1856.
