Who have never played Colonization?

Nope, never played this game before, I started playing civ since civ 2.

Let's see if I can remember all the old units:
Sugar Planter - Distiller
Tobacco Planter - Tobacconist
Fisherman - Farmer
Missionary - Jesuit Missionary
Criminal - Indentured Servant - Pioneer - Hardy Pioneer
Veteran Soldier - Dragoon - Continental Army
Fur Trapper - Fur Trader
Preacher
Elder Statesmen
Lumber Jack - Carpenter
Ore Miner - Blacksmith - Silver Miner
Gunsmith
Cotton Planter - Weaver
Expert Scout - I think it is called Seasoned Scout . 4 movement per turns, regardless of terrain :D

During that time, it was just three games for me: civ, col, and xcom.

I played Colonization before, and I feel old :crazyeye:

Yes, it is called a Seasoned Scout, but terrain affects movement; 1 movement point for clear terrain, 2 movement points for most forests, 3 movement points for wetlands forests and mountains. They can go a long way following a river though as they can traverse multiple river squares for a single movement point.

Well colonization was the first game on the series to play, and I still play it.Then my brother was playing alpha centaury and I start playing too, then i played civ 2 but my real introduction to civilization was civ 3(wich I love most)(it was the first civ game i really played, before I didn't knew english) and finally I am playing civ 4 right now.

I'm an old player (36 y.o). My first computer was a ZX 81

Played the original Colonization a lot.

My first game was 'Colossal Cave' text adventure on an IBM 1401 mainframe.

10 years or so before I started gaming on a minframe I used a PDP8 - Proper fast tape readers were a luxury so everything was loaded by the teletype which had a tape punch reader. The IPL was via swiches on the front panel which were used to dump code in octal into the core so it knew how to read the tape. Now where did I put the coding sheets I need to send off for punching.....

i played freecol, which was very hard to get used to and abonded quickly!

Languages don't matter to me! The lack of a manual and tutorial was crippling for me because i didn't know what was going on!

download dosbox and original dos colonization. install and download newest patch. It comes with a ingame tutorial and indepth ingame info. Play on discoverer.

It will get you through the basics.

These wasn't languages but new colonizers(but I don't suggest you download the latest realeas cause it's alpha and very unstable)...Also there is now some ingame tips and a good manual to read...But also you can just read the old manual and play Freecol it's just very same.

I was 13 years old when it was released and I cant think of any game I played more at that point. I loved the resource management of the game; setting up traderoutes, tuning the export/import so perfectly it was rediculous. However, I found the warfare of the game to be lacking. If I recall correctly you could only make 3 kinds of offensive units, infantery, cavalry and cannons.

The war for independence at the end was a yawn. And I was annoyed at the fact that efter the Royal Expeditionary Force had capitulated, it still landed units and attacked you, and blockaded the sea, and you couldn't trade with Europe, and the other colonial powers couldn't do anything. And you still couldn't found any new settlements after independence. They simply hadn't bothered to enable playing after independence. I trust that has changed.
