Why do you or don't you believe in God?

I do not believe in god for the same reason you do not believe in leprechauns

You killed the last remaining god at a General Mills plant?!?!

You should believe in something because that's where your thought process takes you.

Even if the thought process is flawed, or inherently biased by man's innate need for immortality?

I do not believe in God because I hate organized religion and how it turns people into mindless drones (at least it does around here.)

I don't believe in the stories early men made to explain what they didn't understand and the political games that followed. Hopefully, human beings will slowly but steadily abandon the useless concepts of God(s) and religion.

I don't believe in god because I've never encountered any thought-model requiring such a thing.

There simply is no need for one - believing in god is as much beyond any reason as believing in demons causing epilepsy. If the answer to any question is unknown, it's still better to say "I don't know" than making up something completely weird...

If anyone needs a religion to live an auspicious life - fine with me, as long as it doesn't harm others - I don't need any.

But so is not believing in something because you can't see it.
I believe that behind every corner the are lots of pink elephants floating in the air, and as soon as I round the corner they disappear? Also, other people forgets it when they appear and they can't be captured by any cameras.

Are you saying that is just as rational as not believing it?

I don't believe in god because

a) I see no reason to believe in something that a few humans arbitrarily created thousands of years ago

b) My parents are both atheists. The idea of atheism is as easily passed down through generations as the idea of religion.

Who are you to say what the motive for someone else's belief is?

Most people admit the motive for their belief, but other times it is obvious. Like a lot of the time someone will become a Christian a few days after their mother passes. This is obviously because they wish their mother to be in a safe place (Heaven).

I believe in God. I suppose all of it dates back to when I was a little boy. Whenever something bad happened, whenever I was in trouble, or whenever I was frightened, I always had a sense of and told myself that I will be okay. Whatever happens, I will survive and make it through. Although it is hard to explain, I have always felt that there was something there with me at all times. I had a feeling that I was protected. To me, what I feel is the presence of God and I have so felt it since before the word 'God' entered my vocabulary.

But there is no innate belief of God. You have to have been given the notion by someone.

If this is true, how did the first worshiper of God ever begin to believe?

How do you know this? Humans seem to have a very strong need to understand things and to be a part of something bigger than the individual. I believe that these two common threads illustrate the underlying drive we have to find unity in the universe.

I believe in God because he seems to be real to me according to my experiences. It is all about faith really.

I know a lot of you guys believe that love between humans exist, and I think the reasons why I believe God exist is very similar to the reasons why you believe love exists. I of course don’t believe in love for many reasons. You guys are so good at explaining why:D:

-I don't believe in love simply because I don't need to. I'm sure if I needed love and a partner to live my life day to day, I could convince myself that all that was real.

-I think, above all else, it is a waste of time.

-I don't believe in love because it makes no sense to me and I only believe things that make at least some sort of sense to me. That's basically it.

-Because it is irrational and foolish...

-I do not believe in love because I hate organized marriages and how it turns people into mindless drones (at least it does around here.)

-I don't believe in love because I've never encountered any thought-model requiring such a thing.

-I don't believe in love simply because I have no reason to. I don't necessarily think love doesn't exist, but you could say that about anything, really. I put as much weight in love as I do in Star Wars.

I kinda agree with you on that one, the only difference being that love usually affects only the 2 people (depending on the culture) involved in the relationship and rarely and up in bloody wars.
I have nothing against the concept of religion and raw faith without any kind of proof, my problem is with the consequence of religion and the conviction of some religious people that they have to try and pass on their beliefs to others.

Great post, but beware when they come back at you with love is nothing more than electro chemical reactions in the brain. Let Love open the door.

Why do we fight wars? Usually it is to protect our loved ones, right?

I believe love is a more important reason for more wars than religion has ever been. Religion is mostly only a way to make people accept a war and force them to fight on your side. The true reason for the war is usually something else, like power and money. And why do people want power and money? Because of love! Love isn’t free, you know;).

I acknowledge the existance of the God/s Theory.

love and god are 2 drugs.
Both don't really exist, but if you believe in them.. they will change your life.
If any, love is a self-intoxication of chemicals, while god isn't anywhere, until you believe in him - then he's just a chemical collection too.

I haven't seen a sign of god, nor an indication that love is something more than chemicals.
The "purpose of life" doesn't exist.
Also, if god does exist, I would beat the crap out of him for the suffering he has done to organisms (which is also just chemicals in the brain).

I blame nature itself for creating organisms with the ability to suffer and reproduce.
My personal goal is to reduce suffering and NOT reproduce.

You could say love is like suffering in this sense, but love was made so that animals could reproduce and make more suffering organisms.

Must organize this logically sometime.. :crazyeye:
