Wordle

I'd probably get into wordle if you could play more than just one a day. I tried it out one day, found the UI a bit clunky, and had fun, but when I beat the puzzle I wanted to solve another one.. but.. was told I have to wait "a day". So I promptly closed the tab and forgot all about wordle

It kind of reminds me of old network TV. Everyone had the same three channels and everyone watched Carson, so there was something you could talk about the next day at work. Kind of like the Andy Warhol thing where he said whether you’re President or King or some janitor, you’re all drinking the same bottle of Coca-Cola.

That’s what it is, just another kind of social equalizer.

I'm finding it more fun if my opening word is chosen on whim. And sometimes the 2nd word on whim too, if I'm not doing a Hail Mary on the 2nd.

It was fun building an optimal opener, but whimsy is more my style.

Huh, 'style' might open tomorrow.

I think the maths is slightly more complicated than that (it is not taking into account duplicated letters, and p of a hit in 4 goes is not 4 * p of a hit in 1 go), but if you say you have not lost a game my intuition must be wrong. It must be a solvable problem, if you play optimally what is your chance of winning? If I was more bored I would give it a go.
way too late here but i just wanted to say my 2cents

it's quite easy imo to win by just eliminating letters the first few tries, and then starting on an actual word. it's less optimal if you aim for correctly guessing with fewer tries.

prioritize vowels by using words with at least two vowels per word, but also go for consonants that are the most common.

You can play here as often as you want, and make longer words too: https://hellowordl.net/

I did a binge of about a dozen there and got it out of my system. Now I just do the daily one

I think 'style' is an excellent word if you have a few second guesses that get more vowels. But the final "e" is so common nice to eliminate it, and "y" is still worth checking, and you eliminate S,T, and L which are use in consonant blends, not to mention the plural.

Without commenting on the effectiveness of it, I chose "guise" today to start.

If anyone's interested, 3blue1brown did make a video about wordle, recently.
In fact he made two of them, apparently needing to correct something in the first :/
(I have watched neither)

But how often does it happen that people get together to talk about last night's wordle? Instead, from what I've noticed anyway, people post their "this is what it took me to complete last night's puzzle" statistics up without any commentary, and that's far as the "discussions" go

Just seems artificially gimmicky to me.. but I've also since been given a link that allows me to play this as many times as I want

Turn on hard mode. You must use any yellows in subsequent guesses.

Plus bare in mind brute force hits a par of 3.5ish, so...

1 - You jammy bugger
2 - Outstanding
3 - Good job
4 - Satisfactory
5 - Passable
6 - Embarrassment averted

Assuming the possible words are a closed set (and common for all players), it would be straightforward to calculate which opening words are optimal (although you still need to set values for worth relation between getting letter+position, compared to just letter). So I don't see how the absolute optimal word(s) for given worth relations are not known already - they should be.

The strategy has been analyzed - you can google it. It's not straightforward.

I am not talking about the strategy, just establishing which word has - theoretically not practically - more chance to be chosen. Obviously by itself that doesn't lead to success, since you only have very few guesses so the start is heavily biased and on a case-by-case basis.

Got absurdle in 8. But I suppose there is no such thing as today's word there.
I play to get the wordle word. Today it took 12 words, with a couple of one-word takebacks. I was happy with this. I've not had any many-word takebacks because of eliminating a letter in the first couple of words lately, and I'm getting better about putting the last couple of letters in the wrong spot first to eliminate words I don't want that nonetheless have the same letters as mine.

For my first word I try to pick one that has the most number of common letters like R S T L N E A.
O, I, H, C, L, and U are also very common letters in the English language I draw from if need be. So if it's a 5 letter word, I might start with STEAL

I always reuse any green or yellow letters from my previous guess, and try to think up of a word that contains them such that the yellow letters appear in other spots, and the new letters are as common as possible as well.

I keep going until I've solved the puzzle. So far it always takes 3-4 guesses, one time 5 IIRC, but I've only done a handful of these so far.

How's my strategy?

Someone already posted the letter frequency in English, it starts E,T,A,O, and N. When it comes to 5 letter words the order may change but likely not much for the top 5. So yeah, sound strategy, I'd say.
