Lots of people have a word or few they've been using incorrectly. I know a girl who misused pedantic in a most ironic manner. I recently had a suspicion I needed to look up "attenuate" which I thought was a sort of gentle matching of one signal to another signal. Turns out that's not the definition at all. Now I have to find a totally different word because I have no word to fill that connotation.

What words have you misused regularly? What stories of others do you have?

p.s. if someone has a replacement word for me, let me know.

Does pronouncing words wrong count?

Because I had to learn from experience that it is not pronounced "Hyperbowl."

I thought "hegemony" was pronounced "HEH-guh-mone-y".

conscience and conscious

Well, "heg-emmeny" is fairly close. :)

I for one thought that hubris (as it looks) was pronounced "hyu-bree" and coup de grace ("coo de gras") was "coo day grar". Foreign pronunciation has never been my thing.

You misunderstimate my grammar skills. If it weren't for the sight rules, I would be petroling the forums for bad grammar rite this vary moment.

Penultimate. It's so easy to confuse this word for something that's not "next to last."

I remember when I got taught the meaning of that word.

If my use of a word appears to be incorrect, you've misunderstood my intent.

To the OP, it sounds like you are looking for or just confusing the similar word "tune," as in tuning a musical instrument, and possibly "attune" as a verb for more generic contexts.

I'm pretty sure that's what you're looking for, but if it was still something else for a different connotation you're looking for a word like "correlate" or "synchronize"

:D
Synchronize is pretty good. A bit too strong but I like it. Attune might be the one I'm looking for *off to see it in contexts.
