Hello :) None of you know me, but I've done NESs on...another website. Unfortunately, the NES community on that website is all but dead, so I've decided to move it here. We haven't started yet, so please, feel free to jump right in :)

----

Political Map:

Economic Map:

(Blue = Wealth, Yellow = Poverty)
Note: Outdated.

Influence of the Empire:

(Purple = Strong, White = None)

Stability:

(Green = Little risk of major uprising, Red = Total anarchy)

The World Empire, presently headed by King George XXVI, has thus far lasted 500 years. Under its banner, Earth has experienced half a millenium of peace and development. Old cultures are faded, as are old ideas and old memories and vendettas.

However, recently the empire has begun to stagnate. A combination of a declining economy and a series of inept Kings had lead to increased sectionalism. New ideas within the Empire are not as readily tolerated, and the aristocracy of government prevents radical policy changes.
Privately, within some academic circles, there is talk that the era of the World Empire may soon come to a close. While very few mainstream thinkers would subscribe to this theory (and fewer still would ever publicly admit it), it is apparent to all that, at the very least, the Kings of today were neither as wise nor as powerful as the Kings of yesterday.

You are a Royal Governor. The Empire, as a general policy, will allow its governors to rule their subjects as they see fit, so long as it does not come into immediate conflict with the wishes of the Imperial Family. As you have been always reminded, you are of course simply representing the King himself and serve at his majesty. You are not independent and must act carefully in matters of great concern.

It is your job, then, to navigate your people through these changing times.

===

This NES is pretty simple. No complex rules for you to follow or spreadsheets to track...This is more a "creative" NES than it is a rule-based NES.
Pick a region of the world and write up some information about it: Its language, its culture, its government (remember, of course, that the Empire itself is a Hereditary Monarchy). Be reasonable when writing up all the stuff (for instance, you *could* say that half the world joins you. I advise against it)
The big point of the NES is to be creative, write a good story, have fun...Hence, keep this in mind as you play.

Be sure to include whether you are declaring complete independence from the Empire or whether you remain a loyal subject of the King.

I will play all NPCs and I will play the World Empire. Just be fairly reasonable, be creative, and have fun :b:

Scales from 0-5

Independent: No
Leader: The Council of Governors (das)
Government: Federal Techno-Aristocratic[1]
Economic System: Autocratic Free Market Capitalism [2]
Society: Very mobile, meritocratic, technocratic, but increasingly stratified; technically the poor can make it all the way to the top, but most of them stay down and that down is looking worse and worse (the usual dystopia). There is a considerable work ethos, but it is slipping; another alarming tendency is the growth of corruption.
Values: Order, prosperity, opportunity, merit, hedonistic pleasure and above all - technological progress. Technocracy is virtually the state ideology.
Other Information: Is effectively a league of HUGE city-states in the area (thus the Congovernorate) - originated from several highly-profitable cultural, student and technological exchanges and other agreements, and formalized comparatively recently. In science is particularily obsessed with cybernetics and computerization ("The Technate is Congovernal power plus the computerization of the entire country!"). Poverty among poor getting worse.

Region: New England, Eastern Seaboard of Canada
Colour: Dark Red
Independent: No
Leader: Prince Imperial Alexander (LittleBoots)
Government: Aristocratic[1] Imperial Principality
Economic System: Severely Autocratic Capitalist
Society: Extremely controlled; mobility possible purely based on merit, however mobility is not voluntary; exceptional children selected through testing and raised/educated by the State; all citizens put through batteries of tests at various stages in life to determine proper occupation based on intelligence and proficiencies; All levels of government require years and years of training and education before eligibility; those in the lower classes participate in a tightly monitored free-market, but are kept from becoming too wealthy or too poor by chance (those who are successful by merit are tested and likely moved up the social ladder) through covert government operations; upper classes not bothered with money as all needs are taken care of; all classes finely wrought for their places in society and every citizen has a purpose (no layabout decadance!); medium sized but very well trained military deals with practically nonexistant dissent
Values: Merit; Efficiency; Loyalty; Silent Sacrifice
Other Information: Vast government apparatus complete with loads of surveillance, government assigned homes, spartan efficiency, form follows function; the highest levels of government are exposed to foreign ideas after they have a firm basis in the beliefs and values of the State; purpose is to show the evils of the life we have left behind and the years of training and education (including political science, right philosophy, economics, etc) prepares them to view, consider, and reject the follies of the outside world; end result is that the happiness of the state as a whole is maximized, whereas the happiness of each individual may not be at full potential; Imperial government leaves the Principality alone due to a combination of lies, propaganda, and, most importantly of all, a constant and pleasing stream of revenue from government industries
Population: Census being taken.
Technological Level: High Post-Modern
Economic Strength: Extremely Strong (4), Growth: 0%
Military Strength: Provisional (1)

Leader: Lucien Freud (The Major)
Government: Board of Directors/Council of Governers. Multiple despots.
Economic System: Dual Economies. There is a part of the country devoted to exports and trade, while the economy in general is geared to be self-sustaining. The Alphas (Lucien Freud is the Head Alpha, and he poseses everything) (See below) own the most, and technically own everything of the Thinkers, The Thinkers own all that the Owners posess, and the Owners all that is owned by the Workers.
Society: Caste System... from a young age people are taught what they are to do in life, they have pre-selected duties. Free Thought has practically been destroyed, and everyone works for the good of the Community. The levels within the Caste System are the Ruling Alphas, The Thinkers, The Owners, and then the Workers. The upper echelons of power are all held by the Alphas, and The thinkers are the ones who decide what is needed, what is best for the country, then think how they can obtain or train to get what is needed. They, along with the Alphas run the society. The owners just command the workers, and the workers are workers...
Values: Community, Obidenece, Discipline, Dilligence, Committment, Responsibility, Self-Discipline, Respect.
Other Information (History, etc): Sigmund Freuds grandson Lucien Freud left England in search of a place where he could impliment his grandfathers psychological theories in practise on a grand scale. He came to the impoverished lands in North America where he gained support and the respect as the best psychologist in the west. During a one on one session with the leader of the time, one Ralph Klein, he hypnotised Klein into giving Freud the leadership of the west. The rest they say is history...

Name: The Tri-River Company
Colour: Navy Blue
Independent: No
Leader: Mordechai the Primus
Government: A triumvirate. Two of the members are appointed by the Council of Elders to represent Jewish and Muslim interests in the region. The Council of Elders is appointed by the Primus, and consists of the top religious and military leaders and figures in the land. The Primus has the most power of the three leaders, and is elected by all citizens of the Company.
Economic System: Capitalist, with a universal healthcare system, and a relatively high minimum wage. The courts tend to rule against monopolies to encourage competition. A social security system is in place, but there has been increasing support for it to be privatised.
Society: Very religious, with a small minority of secular, but very rich immigrants hailing from India. Honour and dignity are the most important values in society. The religious leaders are highly respected, and there is little to no friction between the Jews and Muslims. Corruption is rampant throughout the Nile region, but an increased military presence has begun to settle the population down.
Values: Obedience, religion, humility, bravery, security.
Region: Egypt to Iran, and the northern area of Saudi Arabia.
Other Information: The government is very respected, and crime rates are low. Technology is viewed with some suspicion, especially in the Nile region. The population is 50% Muslim, and 40% Jewish, and 10% of the population has no religion. Of those who have no religion, a majority are Indian immigrants who now live in Israel. The land has three capitals: Cairo, Jerusalem, and Baghdad. Religious intolerance affecting atheists.

Colour: Orange
Independent: No
Leader: Jarkan the Tikanyaikil (LightFang)
Government: Theocratic Democracy. High ranking Church officials are officially known as "The Religious Ones". They make all proposals and propositions. The Common People, those lower in rank, vote on these propositions. There is no official "leader" of the ECH.
Economic System: Christian Socialism. All basic needs are met above poverty levels and the more one works, the more one gets. This is an incentive to keep people from being lazy and having sloth, which stagnates growth and is one of the seven sins to boot.
Society: It's predominately Christian. People are very religious and staunch here. Protestants of all races live here and there is no ethnic nor gender discrimination. All people are brothers and sisters as long as they happen to be Protestant. The Religious Ones make all the proposals and the Common People vote on these propositions.
Values: Resourcefulness, hard work, religious zeal
Other Information: Yes, another religiously fanatic society, this time dominated by the Christians...or at least, the non-Catholics. They happen to be religiously intolerant. Power is somewhat centralized as the government mandated Religious Council exercises control over property and distribution of wealth. All basic needs are met at an acceptable level, but hard workers are rewarded with more. Religious violence.
Population: Census being taken.

Society: Xenophiles, Very rich merchant families, no lower class (all meanial jobs are done by the family), Wealth is the controlling factor, freedom.
Values: Total freedom to make or break. Cutthroat economics, and no tazation.
Other Information (History, etc): The harboring ground for Entrepaneurs from around the world, tycoons of all shapes and sizes have settled into the country (or near lack thereof) for near total freedom. There is a council of all the families that keeps the peace. There is no truely singular army, but all families train their children to fight. Started when Ben Merucilucci (An Italian Immigrant) began buying out all competition in South America, thus collapsing a few governments. He said that this land would be totally free, and allowed settlers. Because of the lack of a centralized government, the morale of the union is low, but the economic prosperity, and the prospect of riches draws many to trade with this developing union.

Government: Royal Corperate Democracy (40% owned by the King, voting power determined by the number of shares to have in the corp. Anyone can but shares)
Economic System: Free Economic Zone
Society: Small profit driven transient populations, and a large stable permanent workforce
Values: Profit, Success, Fame, Community, Honor
Other Information (History, etc): California Worldwide Entertainment and the California Free Economic Zone. Since the very beginning, it has served as one of the base factors that served to keep the World Empire. Serving as a subtle means to spread propaganda, and to keep the masses entrained. With fingers in almost every News Organization worldwide, and every form of entertainment on the planet, their influence is second only to that of the World Empire. Their home is the California Free Economic Zone, a place where almost anything not banned by the World Empire can be traded, sold, or bought. But change is in the wind. Over the past 50 years, some subtle, but unsettling trends have been showing up in their work. With the resent upswing of War Pictures, Action Films, and CWE's insistence on using real (though unloaded) weapons in the pictures, it looks like they might have something planed.

Welcome to CFC The Comrade. :)

Interesting idea, but I am not into future history games at the moment. You should join one of our ongoing games so we can get to know you better.

EDIT: Join Imago's NES, it needs some invigorating new blood.

Just how much free rein do we have with our stats? I suppose this could also be restated as "just how different can the Empire's different components be?"

Some stuff about the state of technology will also be useful, for future reference.

Also, how exactly do you see this working (from the viewpoint of orders, updates, etc.)?

Hmm. Maybe, except I don't really want to read 1,000 posts to get a feel for the game ;) I'd rather manage this one.

Also, for reference, when did this world diverge from our own?

Around 1950-60, with the strengthening of the United Nations.

Just how much free rein do we have with our stats? I suppose this could also be restated as "just how different can the Empire's different components be?"

The Empire's different components can be very different. In fact, I encourage it, since it makes for a much more interesting story - I loved reading foolish_icarus' region and history when he submitted it.
Obviously as the game keeps going I will modify the stats to reflect what is really happening

Also, if you try to godmod ("The entire world revolts and appoints me the King!!!1") I will not be pleased :(

Some stuff about the state of technology will also be useful, for future reference.

The Empire has recently closed down the successful Second Biosphere project, an attempt at creating an artificial closed ecosystem that could sustain life functions. Scientists of the Empires recently- and increasingly-marginalised Space Program have said that it raises the possibility of creating colonies on nearby systems such as the Moon or Mars, though most experts dismiss this as an expensive pipedream.

Pacifica Australis has recently announced the completion of yet another Deep Sea settlement and is accepting applications for residency.

Regional Moscow Intercooperation Group has announced its latest in the award-winning series of automobiles, the Spacer V. Now with improved gravitational control and air-bourne autopilot means that you can simply set your destination and forget it! Also comes with an internal holovision set so that your long ride from Ireland City to home can be as enjoyable as possible. And of course, the car is nuclear powered, meaning you never need refueling!

And word leaked from the Imperial Palace is that the King is considering doming various sections of the Earth in order to better control weather patterns. He was very displeased when the Weather Maintinence System failed to prevent rain in Ireland City.

(As well, if you make up something fairly reasonable, I'll integrate it. The deep-sea cities were foolish_icarus's idea)

Also, how exactly do you see this working (from the viewpoint of orders, updates, etc.)?

What will happen is that people will either post their orders in the thread, or they will PM them to me. The orders themselves can be about anything really - since I'm not keeping stats on things like military force or whatnot, vague orders will work so long as they are given roleplaying justification (not: "improve military", but: "The Empire has recently announced that it will be instituting a compulsory military service policy for all teens aged 15-18.....")
Indeed, I will frown upon orders that are 1 sentence, since this game is about storywriting and roleplaying.
I will also frown upon godmodding ("Well, my scientists come up with uberweapon 5 which totally wiped you out!!1 LolZ!1"). Don't do it!

I will update when I recieve everyones orders, or after a reasonable amount of time has passed.

May I ask, what site did you previously NES on Comrade?

Apolyton :)

Well, it's good to have you. Although, I must tell you that NESing here is a bit...different. Even though you have NESed before, I suggest you at least read through a couple succesful NESes before diving in and moding. Even better, join a couple to see how things work around here. NESers here are very encouraging of new (or in your case kind of new) blood, but they tend to get cranky when people just show up and start moding. I am not saying don't do this NES, it would actually be very nice to have something a little different around, but please do get a sense of CFC NESing if you plan to stick around. Again, glad to have you!

Totally not necessary.

Go to post #997, the latest map.
In a second window go to the first page and find the nation list #6 and NPC list #7.

Then find an NPC that strikes you fancy or a blank area in Eurasia and start from scratch. Japan? Brits, Celts, Huns, Mali? You can easily start on the edges and bring yourself in as quick as you want.

You can then come up to speed quickly by just reading the last couple of updates; they are linked to in post #8 near the bottom. Join in and then start you own. :)

Generally second everything Birdjaguar says. I would be glad to have another player.

The NES you just started here seems promising, if old school. I would join if I had any real extra time.

Also, if you try to godmod ("The entire world revolts and appoints me the King!!!1") I will not be pleased

To "godmod", one has to be a "mod", so I understand why such an usurpation would not please you. ;)

I mean things like the difference in economy, society, administration... Most "nations" seem to be free market, but is for instance a form of planned economy acceptable (if given a plausible justification, ofcourse)?

Lastly, this probably seems like a stupid question, but is the Empire's general collapse an eventual possibility?

Israelite, don't you ever stop posting things like that? :p If someone has the ENTHUSIASM to mod, he might as well mod and the others may frankly go to hell. Iggy scarcely had any experience when he started LINES I. I myself was largely out of touch with the modern NESing conventions when I started NES2 I after a one-year break. I don't recall Daftpanzer playing in ANY NES at all, but look at HIS NESes! And there are many, many other examples.

The point is, actual NES experience is unnecessary, and furthermore it can impede one's originality. Plus a mod who isn't in many NESes tends to have more time to concentrate on his own. ;)

Anyway, sorry if this post has been understood as offensive. No offense intended at all. But I hope that you understand why am I bugged with this hijacking (also, technically this thread is not a "can you recommend any good NESes" thread, its a thread for a separate NES altogether, and that makes the INES-related suggestions completely off-topic. Again, no offense intended, but this stuff belongs in PM or in a different thread altogether, and in any case, if the Comrade is interested in it, I'm sure he'll find a way to join it).

[1] In the original meaning of the word "aristocratic". Basically its a meritocratic oligarchy, with a technocratic ideology.
[2] This means that while we do have free market and enterprise and so forth, the state has considerable powers and involvement in that sphere; also, there are many important state-owned companies. I suppose it is comparable to OTL Singapore writ large.

Would that be okay?

Most "nations" seem to be free market, but is for instance a form of planned economy acceptable (if given a plausible justification, ofcourse)?

Of course. You could have a palace economy, or a subsistence economy, or an anarchy if you really wanted.

Lastly, this probably seems like a stupid question, but is the Empire's general collapse an eventual possibility?

It is a possibility, but not a certainty :)

Both of your states are acceptable, and I am processing them now.

Alright. Just one or two more and we can get this started :) If, by the way, you are wondering what that thing on your nation is...It is the Royal Seal of the Imperial Family, indicating your loyalty to the crown. Hence why your nations also have no borders :)

Dunno if it's okay or not...=P I'll try, though.

Hmm. PM the idea to me, and if circumstances are right, I might use it.
If, sometime in the future, no one has claimed the area, you can still enter as your idea....
I am processing up to the Ecumenical Confederation of Humankind. Of course, some of these borders are a little vague ("middle of northern america" ;)) so I'll make map adjustments as required, but otherwise, this game will start!

Once I finish updating the map, the Empire will release its first set of orders, and then everyone can start politicking and posting/sending in their orders :)
