World of Tanks Beta

Release date announced

Just a quick bump to say the above release date wasnt accurate (at least for the American servers). Release date for the American servers is 12 April 2011.

They have also announced the upcoming release of the American Tank Destroyers, which should be very interesting. Reason: the top tier US TD is the T-95 superheavy tank. Its a 4 tracked monster with over 300 mm of armor to its front, and only the Maus is bigger. Gonna get me one and name it Godzilla.

They are also going to add quite a few premium tanks on release as well.

Support for this game continues pretty well, as new maps and updates continue at a regular pace. If you havent taken a look at it, or had played it a bit during beta then left, the end of beta hardwipe and then release would be a great time to get in on the early action.

I've been playing this since Closed Beta and I've liked what I see. Currently in garage I have Marder II and Panzer IV (both Elite), Hummel, Jagdpanzer, VK 3601 H and VK 3001 P. I also have over 15k free xp due to my two Elite killing-machines. :D

It has some major issues, but if it can fix them I'll definitely stay interested.

As long as we're bragging about tanks...

I've a King Tiger and an IS-3, fully upgraded. I have an elite KV and M4 sherman, and also have a fully upgraded jagdpanther. I have owned in the past an elite VK3601, with which I solo'd a King Tiger; an elite Hummel, which I sold because the accuracy was absolutely absurd and not fun; an elite Hotchkiss (pz38735(H)); an upgraded S-51, which I sold for cash because it wasn't quite as fun as I thought it might be, and many other tanks.

I've generated many hundreds of thousands of free xp.

Cardgame, what issues would those be?

As for tanks, this is what I got in my garage, and all are fully upgraded: IS7, IS4, T54, Object 212, ISU-152, Tiger, Jagdpanther, Pershing, T-34, M12. On the verge of trading in my ISU-152 in for an Object 704, and my Jagdpanther in for a Ferdinand. I'm rated at about 700 in the game overall.

I'm downloading this one now. Is this free 2 play for the life of the beta?

It is free to play even after beta. The only thing costing is buying gold for better ammo, equipment, consumables, (average) tanks and premium, which gives you 50% more money and xp for each battle. You get free gold for the duration of beta but after that, it's all for moneys.

I am considering re-installing this, but I suck so bad, which is why I quit in the first place. Aw what the heck, I think I'll do it.

It's just a matter of practice. And if you're at the bottom of the list, don't except to survive in the low level matches. Most of the time there will be some big tank who knocks out many smaller ones but when you get to higher levels, the survivability increases as you get to know how the tanks and their players behave and how to make the best effort in the matches. :)

Oh, and don't hesitate to ask about something from me in-game or here, the name's same on both. ;) You can find me most easily if you search me from "Contacts" and add me to your friendlist. Then you can see me online and right-click my name to chat with me. Be patient though, I tend to battle most of the time so I can't answer right away. :)

I just played 3 matches with the T-26 and got 1 kill. :p

Is there a CFC group for the game? And what exactly are the voice features, or do you need to set up like a Skype channel? Maybe I'll answer my own questions by RTFMing.

I've been slowly getting the hang of this. Currently have KV, T-43, T-34/85, T-34, T-28, T-26, BT-7 and SU-85. I'm not a big fan of the T-43. I was hoping I'd have time to grind a T-44 before the wipe, but I'm going to run out of time. Instead I'm playing with the tanks I like and upgrading them with better gear.

T-34 with Zis-4 and rammer, the fire rate is ridiculous. I've soloed many heavier tanks with it.

I've fallen in love with the KV, yes it's cumbersome and easy target for the artillery, but when you are in the right place at the right time you can make things really difficult for the enemy. I also got my 11 kill record in one match with KV.

Then there's the T-28. I didn't think much of this tank when I first got it, but it's a beast for it's tier. with the same Zis-4 as the T-34, it absolutely shreds anything that's lower tier.

BT-7. Zipping behind enemy lines killing arties and messing their formation just by distracting them. It does not always go like planned, like when the first shot takes out your tracks and makes you a sitting duck. But when you manage to keep your speed and dodge the incoming fire this thing is the best adrenaline rush there is.

A few hints that I have found useful.

When facing tanks much heavier than you, load HE ammo. Although the round wont penetrate the armor, the explosion from the HE has an increased chance of taking out components and crew. Get enough critical hits on a tank, and even the largest is soon near useless.

Where you aim at on a tank makes a difference. Hits to the turrent are more likely to take out the main gun, turrent or gunner/commander. Hits to the front may take out the periscope, driver/loader. Sides and rear shots will hit the tracks, fuel tanks, engines and often start fires or even cause an ammo rack explosion destroying the tank in one shot.

Be aware of which tanks have better hull armor vs turret armor and vice versa. For example, US heavy tanks usually have massive turret armor, but fairly like hull armor. If you can find a position behind a rock or other wrecked tank to protect your hull you greatly increase your surviveablility. I once took out 4 same tier tanks while in a T-29 doing that very thing.

Train your crews in camo as soon as they hit their 100% mark, and learn to use bushes and trees as cover. There is a practice mode in WoT that will allow you and a friend to go in and experiment on this kind of thing, so you can learn what hides you versus what reveals you and at what distances it makes a difference. There is nothing sweeter than being able to shoot indiscriminately at an enemy that cant see you.

Learn the maps. Most of them will have 3 approaches - a left, a mid, and a right approach. Learn which ones are more favorable to the type of tank you are using.

Unless you are a scout, never go out alone. You will just get picked off. Use the mini-map a lot to get an idea of your position relative to everyone else. If you learn to play smart, you will win more games. More wins equals more credits and more experience.

Anyone buying the pre-release package?

I'm kind of confused about buying into the game. If we don't buy, we just grind slower?

Exactly. I won't buy the pre-release package as I've never used real money on any online game for any bonuses and I don't want to miss out all the fun I've had with low tier tanks just for speeding past them with premium to get the heavy tanks. :p

I bought a Tiger yesterday and all the 4 matches I've played with it were with 2 or more T10 tanks on each side. Not fun with a stock Tiger.

Ok thanks. I wasn't sure if it was just free-2-play for the beta, or even after release. I'm buying gold, though since grinding it's that much fun and I bet after release that costs will be such that grinding will be mucho unfun, since they have to make money somehow.

I found this about Macs:

Probably not, but you might get it to run under MacOSX

I will probably buy the smallest package.

As for gold, its used for:

Additional tank slots in the garage.

Converting exp from elite tanks to free exp.

Premium ammo (higher penetration).

Buying credits.

Premium account (allows the formation of platoons, plus exp/credit bonus).

You can certainly play the game without any of all that and play perfectly free.

I did buy the light pre-release pack. as for the gold I think I'll use it to get faster to those tanks I like, and probably some premium time to play in a platoon with friends. I think that's the only gold I will ever buy, so I'm trying to make it last.

I thought you poopsocked the hell out of the Beta and had no intention of playing any more since you had your fill of all the content. ?

See you on the battlefield.
