Uh, I hate to break it to you, but just because it is currently chic to hate Costner, does not in any way change the fact that he is a good actor, and an even better movie maker. Waterworld was epic, cool, excellent, and otherwise fantastic. The Postman was even better than that.:goodjob:

I rather liked Blair Witch.

It highlighted the terrible, terrible power of suggestion.

In any case, it is certainly above the par of many so called 'horror' movies. Most of these are so idiotic and cliched it's beyond a joke.

Legend of the Overfiend was a good porn film, but the sequels were crap.

BTW, Sixchan I think I maybe saw that movie Return Of The overfiend can't remember what is what like, but the name rings a bell.

Big fat guy in a chair called Ceaser, His daughter Elector, and some big monster teddy bear look-alike. Ring a bell? It was on Sci-Fi, if you're wondering, so you probably have seen it...or at least heard about it.

I don't think Costner is a great actor - he's had just as many bad performances as good ones. At the same time I agree that "Waterworld" was a pretty good movie. It wasn't great but I enjoyed it. But his performance in "Robin Hood" made me lose a lot of respect for him. I haven't seen "Postman"

Costner has done some very good films: The Untouchables, Dances with Pigs/Wolves/Whatever, The War, A Perfect World, The Bodyguard and Field of Dreams.
Robin Hood was a fairly grating performance, and the Postman was tolerable.
Waterworld was alright if you could suspend your disbelief, and appreciate the difference of the setting. But I am into alternate Earths and post apocalyptic settings...:)

You must be kiddin' me. I have to admit that there are too many lame movies to define the lamest of them all, but on the topic of "most overhyped movie", Blairwitch is my choice. How this POS become so popular? I remember a few years ago, everyone was talking about it, and how profitable it was for such low budget movie. I just went to see it for curiosity and ended up with a headache!!! GoodGame handycam.

No more ghey movie like that

The worst for me was "Return of the Overfiend" A porno anime that was on a few months ago on Sci-Fi. Worse than being a porno, I think it was also a Sci-Fi film, but I, nor the Writers could decide which one. One minute: Vauge plot with evil dictator killing monsters. Next Minute: Monster guy walks into a pub like he's just finished doing the Bricklaying on the Pizza Hut up the road, finds girl, have sex, girl bursts apart (literally! ), is a giant spider woman, whoosh! Back to vauge save the world plot.

At least if it had been a proper porno, or a decent Sci-Fi movie, I'd have known what to expect.

Urotsukidoji, -if it's what you are refering to- was the first of the genre, the type of violent anime hentai and was I think pretty good and predecessed all the lame hentai anime type. I think I liked the serie, there was an "interesting" plot, some good action in the two ways (figurative) :p and I was expecting a lot from the sequel or next episode, but realized that the other movies made on the Urotsukidoji franchise related only on another parallele story, no developping the plot introduced in the first movie. Go check the first episode (I think "Legend of the Overfiend") and enjoy a cult anime ;)

I think the point Hamlet was making about Blair Witch is that is was a fresh idea at the time, and ambitious in that what it *tried* to do was use the power of suggestion, or suspense to make the viewer afraid, rather than the typical silly guy-with-a-hook-poping-up-out-of-nowhere stuff you see in most cheap horror flicks.

As I managed to avoid the media hype by being in Asia when it was released, I wasn't expecting much. Therefore, I rather liked it too--as an experiment, if you will. Not perfect, and not worth seeing again unless you're a film student or something, but definitely not terrible.

And as for Cosner, good actor/bad actor, I'd say he's okay. Pretty good, even. I liked him especially in an old and excellent Cold War spy movie, No Way Out. Postman could have been a truly GREAT movie if they had made it the tongue-in-cheek comedy it cries out to be, instead of that overblown patriotic stuff. And Waterworld is nothing but Mad Max On Water--good production value, but what is the point? Surely there are better movies to be made out there, Kevin?!?

I'm a big Sci Fi fan, and yet my vote for worst movie ever is Starship Troopers. What a piece of cr@p.

NOOOOOO!!!!

Starship Troopers is not meant to be serious SF! It's over-the-top escapist fun with some interesting social commentary thrown in (I hate to use the expression "tongue in cheek" twice in the same 12-hour period, but there it is).

THe stars are impossibly attractive, the bad guys are impossibly ugly and evil, the whole tone is so impossibly patriotic that you just have to watch it for that! It's a spoof of old WWII movies and bad 'space movies', with some funny post-modern twists thrown in. Like the implication that the humans are Nazi-like (notice their uniforms) and live under a totalitarian system. How about the enlistment commercials? They're supposed to make you laugh. I mean, aliens who literally suck your brains to get your intelligence?!? If you didn't see it as a comedy, go back and watch it again. Really.

I've watched it a number of times, and it gets funnier each time. The caricatured hard-ass veteran played by Michael Ironside is my favourite character. The whole movie is like a live-action anime.

I'm chuckling just thinking about it...

(And, by the way, this is what I meant above about The Postman--it could have been done in the same way to great effect, instead of trying to take itself so seriously.)

Indeed! It is one of the finest pieces of crypto fascist entertainment produced in recent years, setting a fine example for a proper society and a way forward. I did not find it as ridiculously funny as the Scottish fellow, but enjoyed the message and the hypothetical situation put forth.
The uniforms were also most pleasing, and seeing Doogie Howser as a member of the psychic SS provided a chuckle or two.
Don't like the evil commie post-modern twists, nor see it only as a spoof, but rather as a potential model, to have relevant good ideas extracted from.

Freddy got fingered... now thats gotta be the most f*cked up movie i have ever seen... it amazes me that anyone can actually think like that and then make a movie. Im not saying it was a bady movie, it was rather entertaining, but me and my mates (who frequently talk about fisting yo momma up the ass) were disgusted in some parts.

Oi oi, you forgot Titanic

Like Bond said--"Blair Witch" was refreshingly DIFFERENT, relying entirely on psychology to achieve its effect. Typical horror movies are so predictable these days, I almost didn't want to see this one. But I'm glad I rented it. And like Bond, I too was out of country (Guatemala) when this came out, so I didn't experience the hype. I tend to ignore hype anyway, and make my own decisions... in THIS case, thumbs up!

As for "Postman", I found the scenario very interesting--if there's a novel this is based on, I wouldn't mind reading it for further depth into this post-apocalyptic feudalism.... So it was a classic story of the struggle for freedom from despotism--nothing wrong with that.

And "Waterworld" was fairly original and good. I liked Dennis Hopper in it a lot, too.... Like Simon, I get fascinated by post-apocalyptic scenarios, just like I do with other sci-fi. I LOVED the Mad Max movies....

it must be the worst. Movie. Ever.
I assure you it is. Please, please, PLEASE, take my word for it. Do NOT go rent it and see for yourself!! I would not wish such a hideous, villainous fate upon my worst enemies. I am being utterly sincere. It sucks, hardcore, through a tube.

Actually, it occurs to me that one particularly bad scene I attributed to it was the one where Clark tried to stop Supes by throwing old tires at him. That happened in III. My bad. Blame the mental block that prevents me from remembering most of IV.

DO NOT GO SEE THIS MOVIE!! DO NOT RENT THIS MOVIE!! DO NOT CATCH IT ON HBO!! AVOID IT LIKE THE HORRENDOUS PLAGUE THAT IT IS!!!

I am one of the few who so "Blair Witch" before it got huge. I saw it while it was only out in select "artsy" theaters, such as Kendall Square for those of you who know Boston. And I thought the whole thing was real! I'm sure this sounds like I am very gullible but believe me, before all the hype, it made alot of sense. I loved the movie and it scared the hell out of me at the end. Later when we learned it wasn't real, we were disappointed. I think when this film got huge it kind of ruined itself - it became a financial success but lost it's intrigue.

I thought Blair Witch was OK - what really gets me riled up is the Batman Movies: Batman Forever was a grotesque travesty of a movie, fit only for simpletons and mongrels.

OK I won't say that Costner is a bad actor all I'll say is STOP TRYING TO DO ACCENTS. Was I the only one who saw thirteen days or JFK?

dark star, the absolute worst piece of trash i've ever seen. I can only assume i was too young at the time to understand it.
