this would probably be my fav game of all time if it weren't for all those terrible bugs....always the same scenario: I'm able to play for a few minutes, then the game freezes several times before crashing back to desktop...
I've checked my ram and I must say  Civ effectively consumes all my RAM (1024mb) when playing on Huge maps...now this doesn't fit in on the recommended system requirements does it?

I won't be spending any more hours on this game until firaxis develops a decent patch, putting an end to some of the worst errors.

I also have 1024MB of RAM and I only play on huge maps (edited to be even bigger, like 100 X 80!) and I experience NO problems. May I dare suggest the following measures :

1. Defrag your HDD drive(s) on a daily basis.
2. Scan your HDD drive(s) for adware & malware on a daily basis.
3. Set your Virtual memory page-file to a fixed size, such as : min. 2500MB + max. 2500MB (some gamers go up as far as 4000MB!).
4. Close the background programs that are in your user's name in the taskmanager list (except, of course : explorer.exe & taskmgr.exe [the latter being then in temporary use]). The anti-virus, in particular, should be totally closed during gameplay.

Those are very safe measures to take...but they do not seem to solve everybody's memory-management problems with Civ IV. I am one of the (lucky) ones who do not experience such difficulties.

I've tried them all, nothing works :(

No need to go boycotting [civ4] though. I found that my mums measly 248mb ram with 356 mb of virtual memory can play most maps okay, except for jumpy video music, black terrain and chesire cats. The solution is to not play huge maps until you can get more RAM.

And the patch, i hope, will make the black terrain and chesire cats a distant memory.

I suggest you stick to standard map sizes.

I've recently downgraded my drivers to 71.89, and guess what! the game runs smoother then ever even on the highest setting:goodjob:

Cool Murdermass. I saw that you were going to try 71.89 on the thread that I started. Glad to see it worked.
