Would you attend CivCon 2009?

Will you attend CivCon 2009?

I'm in Pennsylvania so Baltimore is easy for me, plus i even have family to stay with. However, I'm concerned that i would be the only adult female in attendance, and being neither a "booth babe" or a "hooker" (see above posts) i may be out of my element. But if any other women (and i don't mean girls) are thinking of attending i'd like to know.

i've never met another civ player so that would be interesting, I'd like a chance to see others play...

I'm not sure how many females will be going, as most females don't advertise their gender. My wife will be going (and possibly our daughter), but I doubt they be at the convention much. :)

You should show up anyway. How often do you get the chance to meet Firaxians or enjoy a weekend of civ with a bunch of fellow civfans!

Or maybe a Hall -of -Famer doing a presentation on one of their games complete with screenshots?
That is a great! idea. I live in NY and Baltimore isn't too far. Will start working on the wife re road trip.

Edit: I voted other, meaning 'no preference'.

I would be highly interested.
:king:

A weekend event would probably be best and most cost effective.
That's our thinking too. :)

A set of clinics in the morning hours over areas like civ development (future games), strategy (civ 1-4 + revo), and maybe modding. The evening hours should be involving different types of multiplayer games for different ages, difficulty levels, custom senarios, etc.
Any such items would be tentative at best at the moment, but what you have outlined is comparable to what was done in '06.

If you guys are serious about doing this and want any help with the coordination of the event I would be willing to offer my services. I do booking and planning for my band which tours across the midwest, so i believe that I would be able to help out in some fashion.
Thank you for your kind offer. You may very well hear from us in follow-up.

What venue? Some of the hotels in that area are far from cheap, and I'd only attend for professional reasons at that cost. A Days Inn would be reasonable for the average income person.
Affordability is an important factor in the planning of this. Hopefully we'll be able to announce particulars that touch on this in the near future.

Anything that supported getting average joes into modding would be awesome.
Such as an interactive modding presentation by some knowledgeable individuals or..?

Hold the con in an interesting city like New York or San Francisco and I'll think about it. As much as I love Civ, I can't justify the expense of flying to some nondescript American city just for a Civ con.
Again, the reason the convention is to be held in the city that it is (just north of it, actually) is because that is where Firaxis Games is located. Whether or not Baltimore itself is interesting is a debate for an Off-Topic thread :D, but what should make this would-be event interesting for Civ fans is an opportunity to interact with Firaxians.

That makes the convention location interesting while its activities run at least! :yup:

It's a great idea,
:)

and I'm pleased for all those living in the US who can take part.
And outside the US too!

I imagine that some provision will be made to offer some of the interesting stuff that emerges via cfc?!
Yes, it would be our intention to offer such goodies available for download. :D

I would be far more likely to go if it were held IN Baltimore and not a nondescript suburb. There's nothing in life worse than being thirsty at 11pm on a Friday night and being stuck at a suburban hotel. I realize it might cost more on the convention fee end, but it would save us all from renting cars.

Precisely. There's nothing worse than being in an Econolodge by the highway and having to scavenge from the strip mall. If it has to be in Charm City then somewhere down by the harbor would be best and have the most options for dining, socializing, and sightseeing.

I understood that, but don't you think some of the Firaxians would appreciate an excuse to get out of Baltimore on a (for them) expensed and/or deductible junket somewhere? ;)

Though I suppose not as many of them would be there.

LOL, the reason we don't is because some of the fine folks on CFC suggest we aren't really women at all. ;)
Seriously though, I'd love to go and meet some of you and see some real players in action, but I doubt I can make it. Besides the "Booth-Babes" would be jealous because Ubenclagen and I would be getting all the attention. :p

Edit: I just checked. Maybe when you guys have a definite date.

We are aiming to have the convention held at a hotel that is as close to Firaxis' headquarters as possible, and it is located north of Baltimore in Hunt Valley. Therefore, it is in this vicinity that we are considering accommodations and not in the city of Baltimore itself.

Yes, at least Modding for dummies.

I'll be there. :D

By the way, the Baltimore Light Rail runs a north-south route from BWI Airport south of Baltimore all the way up to Hunt Valley, very near to where Firaxis is located. There are stops pretty close to downtown & the Inner Harbor (great place for tourists to visit) and also near a number of hotels. The light rail is really convenient and should offer some flexibility in terms of where the event can be held.

Some event specifics, including its dates, will be disclosed before this month is over. :)

Strategy sessions/discussions from some of the excellent players would be what would most entice me to attend. Sessions where one could actually see the strategy rather than trying to visualize it. I do better when I'm shown something rather than merely lectured too. Some of the other adenga items mentioned would be icing on the cake.

Obviously cost would be a factor in my decision to attend also. I would be driving 7-8 hours. The fact that hotel costs would be part of the registration fee is a very nice idea.

I'm sure that some would like to car pool and/or share a room to save money. At least those of you who aren't bringing family along.

Summer sounds good. If I'm in the neighborhood, I'll attend.
