Call me an idiot, but why would loading one gun (out of 5 in the squad for example) with blanks deflect responsibility for the death from the whole group? It seems to me that it would only deflect responsibility from the blank shooter.

Because then noone can be held accountable for the shooting,b ecause in theory, noone knows who fired the blanks, and who didn't.

Or that's what the French army used to do, in any case.

Well, none of the guys in the squad knows who has the blanks. So he can always tell anyone (and himself) that HE used blanks, while the others didn't......
