Naw, remember that people are people. Gather people together, and you'll have junk strewn about.
I can't disagree with you more! Saying that "people are people" is a massive oversimplification, it's like saying "animals are animals" and ignoring all differences between them.
Science has shown that the vast majority of our behaviour is learned, because we are a highly social species. This means it isn't genetically determined and will vary from person to person.
Since religion is a huge source of values to people, it is realistic to expect that the followers of one religion would behave different than the followers of another (or no religion).
For example, my personal values (these are consistent with, but weren't brought about as a result of Islam), lead me to feel a great deal of guilt and shame if I litter. I even go so far as to pick up other people's garbage and to point out to them that they should be more considerate of others.
One time, on a bus, I noticed a young guy drinking juice from one of those cola-like plastic bottles. When he finished, he just dropped it on the floor, and it rolled towards me. I was just about to get off the bus, so I picked it up, banged it lightly on a metal bar and got the person's attention. I showed him the bottle and walked off the bus with it. Afterwards, I still had to walk another 10 or so minutes before I got to my destination and finally threw out the bottle once I entered the house I was visiting.
Not everyone would do the same things that I would, or feel the same way, but that is exactly my point. People are inherently different and suggesting otherwise is completely contrary to all that we've discovered about ourselves.
