Would You Eat This?

Never heard of Heartland chips before, so I'd say no, mainly because I'm not familiar with them.

Generally speaking, when it comes to chips flavours, I don't trust the so-called meat flavours, especially chicken.

Heartland is NZ brand.

Chicken chips are fine the big warning ones are beef and pork flavours.

Actually yeah meat in general not good flavours. Chickens the exception.

Our favorite flavours.

Sour cream and chives
Green onion/spring onion.
Balsamic vinegar and caramelized onion.
Sweet chilli relish
Greek Tzatziki
Feta and Herb

The basic/traditional flavours

Chicken
Green Onion
Ready salted
Salt and Vinegar

Bacon is one of the basic flavors that Lay's and Old Dutch put out. They are part of the cycle of favorites I get. Not sweet, not hot-spicy, just wonderfully savory.

The basic flavors of Lay's and Old Dutch here:

Classic/Original
Barbecue
Sour Cream & Onion
Salt & Vinegar
Dill Pickle
Ketchup
Bacon

The major chip companies make all of those.

Old Dutch makes Sour Cream & Cheddar, which isn't bad.

Lay's makes Sea Salt & Pepper (good if you want a bit of a hot 'kick', though it's black pepper, not the more exotic stuff)

Old Dutch has Onion & Garlic (a favorite; too bad they only sell it in the boxes, not the bags)

The Barbecue flavors taste noticeably different, depending on which brand you try. I prefer Old Dutch, as it's a hotter flavor than the others.

I've seen Doritos' Sweet Chili chips, but haven't tried them. The basic flavors of that brand that's everywhere is Nacho Cheese, Zesty Cheese, and Ranch. There are others, but they tend to come and go; there was one that I liked, but it was discontinued (happens almost as soon as I decide to like a new flavor of something).

Jalapeno-flavored chips are here and there... I haven't tried them.

Doritos sweet chilli are awesome. One of my favorite non potato chips.

Got to try the gravy chips tonight. Much to my surprise I enjoyed them along with most if the family. Wife wasn't a big fan.

Wouldn't say they're awesome but would eat again.

@Valka D'Ur I mentioned you said fries and gravy were good and the family chat got more enthusiastic. Sister in law bought a bag which set off an avalanche and late night trip to supermarket.

Apparently these are a thing:

But so that I'm not just spending my time in this thread on the worst crisps, here's one of my favourite brands/flavours:

Lots of crunch, really strong vinegar taste - like actual vinegar, not whatever brands like Walkers have in them - and a nice bit of salt. Delicious.

Salt and vinegar variants fairly safe. Probably my favorite.

Made from free range potatoes even.

Anything candy/sweet flavoured us gross imho.

Free range potatoes? :crazyeye:

Suddenly I have a mental image of a herd of potatoes standing out in fields, contentedly munching on grass, and occasionally saying the potato equivalent of "moo".

Yeah they put that on the packaging. They're taking the piss and using it in marketing.

Free-range means not being confined in a small space, being allowed to move around as they please, while having a safe place to sleep. I just can't imagine how this would apply to real potatoes. You plant them, and they grow. They don't jump out of the ground and go someplace else.

Unless, of course, you're my former avatar, Spud.

He's partial to the open road, and would prefer not to be turned into potato chips, thankyouverymuch. :)

There's two main chip companies here plus the off brand supermarket in house ones.

The two main ones are quite nice and often cheap.

The small companies have to be creative with marketing or quality.

So they come up with strange flavours or. Cheeky marketing like whackachangi.

I am pretty sure we've had various varieties of gravy flavoured chips here.. Probably mainly because it's Canada and so.. poutine.. etc.

Why does that say "Potato & Gravy" though? Is potato a part of the flavour or are the chips just made from potatoes? I don't really eat many chips these days, but I usually only see the flavour on the front.. and then it will say "potato chips" off somewhere to the side. "Potato & Gravy" would make me think that the flavouring in the chips is potato (and gravy)

No idea potato and gravy is a thing here though.

1. KFC
2. Mashed potato and gravy.

I don't eat either one. It's kinda old fashioned here.

Had to run to the store and see if there was any gravy chips...no such luck. I remember seeing 'Biscuits and gravy' several months ago, but never tried them.

'Normal' flavors that have been around forever (besides 'original'):
Sour Cream and Onion
BBQ
Sea Salt
Dill
Vinegar
Cheddar Cheese
Ranch
Jalapeno
Limon/Lime
Honey BBQ/Honey Mustard/Honey BBQ Mustard
(of course many combinations of the above, especially with cheddar cheese)

A bit different:
Sweet potato and brown sugar
Chili cheese
Hot wings
Buffalo

No thanks:
Garlic and rye
Blue corn

I settled on one Honey BBQ and one Cheddar Jalapeno.

Did not see chocolate or caramel flavored chips, but did for rice cakes.

I remember trying the XD-13 chips (mystery flavor, which was cheeseburger), not bad, but didn't buy another before they were discontinued. Never tried the Mountain Dew flavored chips, as that apparently was never released outside Australia. Edit: I guess they were in the US back in 2008 under 'The Quest' packaging (another mystery flavor thing).

Pringles seems to handle (or at least try) more weird flavors than anybody, and can make those flavors work. How could I forget Pizza flavored chips!

Pay for the postage I'll send you some. Not cheap though.

I searched online its $5 for a packet that is 150g
Which is in the premium price range, of slow cooked chips probably why they are not exported and sold here.

Thanks for the offer but, after postage it will probably cost like $10
I rather buy one of those Japanese Michell star Ramen at that price those are worth $10

Salted caramel crisps? I love salted caramel, but crisps? :vomit:

If you really want to try them pay that price. I can't post for cheaper.

I can buy some imported British chips similar price around $5 a page. Normally we pay around $1-$3.50 for a bag.

Tried some British monster munch which we used to be able to get here when I was a kid. They were nice enough but triple or quadruple the price so good to try not for general munching.

Green onion us easily our most popular flavour, as I understand cheese and onion is in the UK. American friend says cheese varieties are USA.

Chip dip recipe is also different as we use reduced cream. I think you can only get that in Aussie/NZ otherwise it's similar with onion soup mix.

Reasonably basic flavour one of our favorites.

Sour cream and chives.
