WW2-Global

It's alright! Ha! I was actually referring to the US city of Columbia.

 Whoops  I guess one can read it either way, it makes more sense now though!

Maimonides,

"Do Coastal Fortesses work in this scenario? I can't remember."
Maimonides

Due to a bug within the Civ 3 game-engine they will not work as described
in the editor.
Will be removed in 2.7.

That's what I thought. Thanks for the info. I won't build them any more.

On adding temples in Brazil:

Will consider it for the next version.

There have not been any playtests-reports om Brazil earlier.
Thus there are probably some improvements left to made.

Then I'm glad I'm doing it. It's been extremely boring, but Brazil wasn't a global player in the '40s so that's probably how it should be.

Temples also make sense when considering how Catholic the country was-to simulate the churches. I'm well into 1942 & still building improvements in some of the coastal cities. If Temples were preplaced there, it would be one less Turn I would have to report, "nothing happens."

As far as balance, I invaded Brazil as the U.S. back in version 2.4. It was very slow going because of the jungles as makes sense. I don't think preplaced Temples would help Brazil in that regard at all. It just represents the country's culture at the time & makes it a bit less boring for a player.

First of all, Maimonides, great reporting, I really enjoy reading them. They got some nice entertainment value. :)

And by the way, your playtest has me cracking up laughing at times! I must say it is quite enjoyable to read.

Thanks, folks. I'm trying to have fun with it.

Now, I have always wondered why you keep producing combat engineers as you seem to use them mostly for terraforming (and not for railroads). Normal workers work the ground with the same speed and are much cheaper. Furthermore you are not involved in any conflict that you would need their hit points and defense value.

Here's my thinking:

1. When I get Coal (if I ever get Coal), I'll need lots of them to build railroads in the jungle.

2. If I am attacked, I still can't produce Infantry & move them to defend my far-flung cities quickly so stacks of Combat Engineers might buy me precious time.

I could be wrong.

I am waiting for your attack upon Argentina. I think you have to take all South-America ( and this soon) to have a chance to become a serious opponent to the other heavyweights of the game.

take care and we are all waiting for more news from the country where women and beaches are too beautiful to really worry about going to war...:)

Yeah, I can really feel the clock ticking every Turn. It will still be several Turns before I am ready to attack Argentina, but, if I can get their resources, I'll be able to build units to have a chance of taking on the big boys. If I am going to unite Latin America, I'll have to war the Allies eventually to get Georgetown & Panama...

I have now and then considered a "super-convoy" unit for US to solve the problem
with AI and trans-ocean wars.
Its possible such a unit will be introduced in version 2.7.

The talk about this unit really worries me. What if the U.S. turns it anywhere besides mainland Europe? The U.S. could easily invade & capture Japan's home islands in 1941, not to mention all the smaller, unaligned nations. Italy's holdings in Africa wouldn't stand a chance. It would completely unbalance the game unless a way was found to ensure the U.S. would only send it to Europe.

Also, it should be nearly impossible for the Allies to successfully invade occupied Europe without the Russians in the war against the Axis.

It is amazing how fast the Liberty Ships were produced though! I do agree. You know, since Liberty ships were made from 1941 to 1945, if they became available on the technology tree for Sea 1941, carrying a similar amount of troops as a regular transport, but at a much lower cost in shields, this might actually help the US AI as well in launching more naval assaults! The US AI needs things like this in order to secure a more active role in the conflict.

I think that's worth trying for the reason you mention & also to add historical flavor. The Liberty ships were instrumental in shipping the U.S.' vast industrial output across the Pacific & Atlantic to the war zones.

And about the German AI - how about adding Norway/Denmark, Yugoslavia and Greece to the Allied alliance?

This would maybe make Russia think twice about going after Norway (and Sweden) and make Germany going north, and would maybe make Italy launch a Balkan campaign (with the Germans helping out and conquering the lot) - in other words, trigger a larger European conquest by the Axis alliance.

I've thought about this, too. Germany should be taking Norway & Denmark, but they usually don't. It would probably tip the balance too heavily in favor of Germany in Europe though if those places started under Axis control.

I like seeing an independant Yugoslavia at the start of the scenario. The Axis can take it anytime they want to. It's up to them.

Same thing with Greece, although it was the British who defended Crete when the Germans invaded it.

Ver 2.5. Brazil. AI most aggressive. Regent.

The only land military we can build are Infatry, Flak & artillery. The only sea unit we can build is the 1939 Destroyer. The only planes we can build are the Fighter & the Bomber... Obviously, we should go to war. If there was a Spearman unit available, I'd build one to represent our resourceful Amazon natives.

Week 20, 1942:

-Great Britain finally captures Addis Abeba! The Axis have been removed from Africa. I'm surprised how long Italy held that city. Maybe they grow exceptional tomatos there.

Week 21, 1942:

-Great Britain captures Hiroshima!!! Holy cow!

Week 22, 1942:

-Fortaleza builds a Bank & starts building a Combat Engineer.

Rio de Janeiro has been pumping out Infantry & sending them to Montevideo. We have 16 of them there now.

To be continued...

Just to clear things, I mean adding Norway/Denmark, Yugoslavia and Greece to the Allies, i.e. UK, US, France etc., wich means Germany is automatically at war with this countries.

Germany, Italy, Japan and smaller countries on the Balkans are usually referred to as Axis.

Ver. 2.5. Brazil. AI most aggressive. Regent.

Week 23, 1942:

-Teffe builds a Barracks & starts building a Combat Engineer.

Week 24, 1942:

-Italy offers us a peace treaty. I try to renegotiate it. They have 129 Gold & extra Wines, but they won't even give up 10 Gold for peace. I decline their offer hoping to get a better deal in the future. They can't reach our shores anyway so I'm in no hurry to make peace with them.

They are "annoyed," but so am I. They can drink wine. We only have muddy river water that tastes like river otter poop. Taking a second look, Fortaleza has Cattle so they can drink milk, but have you ever tasted the milk of a cow that grazes in the jungle? Yuck.

-Japan STILL hasn't recaptured Hiroshima! They have every other city in their home islands so I'd think they'd make Hiroshima their priority. I'm just amazed at how well Great Britain AI has done in the Pacific & how badly the Japanese are performing.

Week 25, 1942:

-It costs us an additional 990 Gold to renew our Rubber for Iron trade with France. It will be so nice to have Argentina's resources...

Week 26, 1942:

-Sao Paulo builds a Hydro Plant & starts building a Manufacturing Plant.

Week 27, 1942:

-Recife builds a Hydro Plant & starts building a Manufacturing Plant.

Week 28, 1942:

-Our scholars learn Land 1941. We expect to learn Air 1941 in 20 Weeks.

-Great Britain captures Su-Chou! Fish & chips are kicking the heck outta sushi!

Week 29, 1942:

-Argentina demands our Rubber! I take a huge risk by refusing & get lucky. They do not declare war. Their Tanks could have taken two of our cities immediately. Whew!

-Montevideo builds a Hydro Plant & starts building a Manufacturing Plant.

Week 30, 1942:

-Great Britain captures Sian!

-Brazil captures a case of malaria!

Week 31, 1942:

-Japan demands 95 Gold from us. I refuse & they declare war! They aren't even in control of Hiroshima...

-We renew our Horses for Aluminum trade with the Soviets.

-Great Britain captures Ansi!

Week 32, 1942:

Nothing happens...

Week 33, 1942:

-Puerto Acre builds a Combat Engineer & starts building a Barracks.

-Cuyabaya builds a Combat Engineer & starts building a Library.

-Great Britain captures Lanchow & Tsingtao!!!

Week 34, 1942:

-Germany declares war on the Soviets!!! The other Axis nations do the same.

-BUG REPORT: The message above in-game was "Germany declared war on the Soviet's!" There should not be an apostrophe in "Soviets" in that sentence. This error appeared in each message when the Axis nations also decared war.

-Germany captures Lutsk!

Week 35, 1942:

-Porto Alegre builds a Combat Engineer & starts building an Airport.

-The Soviets capture Fushun!

-Someone razes Pyongyang! Either the Soviets or the British.

Week 36, 1942:

-The Soviets declare war on Norway-Denmark! The War of the Herring has begun.

Week 37, 1942:

-Curitiba builds a Combat Engineer & starts building an Airport.

-We spot 2 Chilean Infantry in Argentine territory west of Asuncion. This is the 1st troop movement we've seen from our neighbors.

-Great Britain captures Peking!

To be continued...

Ver 2.5. Brazil. AI most aggressive. Regent.

I didn't notice it at the time, but someone razed Kushiro in Week 37, 1942. The culprit was most likely either the Soviets or the U.S.

Japan has been collapsing quickly. They never got their conquest of the Pacific under way &, despite early success in China, are quickly losing the mainland, too.

Great Britain has been unusually successful in Asia & the Pacific this game.

Playing Brazil so far has been like watching bowling on TV.

Week 38, 1942:

-The 2 Chilean Infantry west of Asuncion enter our territory. A Chilean Tank also motors up to Asuncion... We'll never buy a single Chilean sea bass again if they attack us. Asuncion has no garrison, yet. We march the garrisons of Porto Alegre & Curitiba (2 Infantry) to Asuncion just in case. 2 Infantry from Montevideo begin marching there, too, but won't arrive until next Week.

-Fortaleza builds a Combat Engineer & starts building a University.

Week, 39, 1942:

-Chile declares war on us! Their Tanks destroys one of our Infantry at Asuncion & they move 2 more Infantry into our territory there. Brazil's party has ended. The War of the Alpaca has begun.

-BUG REPORT: The message above in-game was "The Chile declared war on us!" It should be either "The Chileans" or just "Chile." "Los Chileans" would be a nice touch.;)

-Asuncion builds a Combat Engineer & starts building Infantry.

-We rebase our Fighter to Asuncion.

-Our Bomber is dusted off (it hasn't flown in 3 years!) & sent to attack the road north of Santiago. Our bombadier misses his target. He's hung over & a little out of practice... If we can knock out that road, Santiago will lose access to Coal & stop building Tanks.

-20 Infantry are ordered to march from Montevideo to Asuncion. Montevideo retains a garrison of 4 Infantry plus our navy remains there for now.

-The Sub that has been stationed off Cape Horn for 3 years is sent north to scout the Chilean coastline. I hope they don't look too closely at the beaches. Those guys haven't seen a girl in 3 years. They get turned on by penguins.

So far, no AI has circumnavigated South America.

-Great Britain captures Haichow!

Week 40, 1942:

-Cuyabaya builds a Library & starts building Infantry. From books to guns, boys!

-Chilean Infantry attack Asuncion destroying 1 of our Infantry.

-Our Fighter tries to strafe the attacking Chileans, but misses. I order target practice with something other than blowguns.

-Our Bomber destroys the road north of Santiago. That removes southern Chile's access to Coal so they won't be building any Tanks there. They can still produce tumbleweeds which are capable of attacking in large numbers.

-12 Infantry leave Asuncion & begin the march over the Andes toward Arica. 4 are left behind as defense. I pray 12 Infantry will be enough.

-Great Britain captures Tientsin!

-The Soviets recapture Lutsk!

Week 41, 1942:

-Porto Alegre builds an airport & starts building Infantry.

-4 Chilean Infantry attack Asuncion without success. They suffer 2 losses & 1 damaged. We counterattack that damaged unit & lose 2 Infanty.:(

-Our Bomber is rebased to Asuncion.

-Japan recaptures Hiroshima & Okinawa!

Week 42, 1942:

-Recife builds a Manufacturing Plant. It has all improvements now. It will switch to military production starting with a garrison.

-Curitiba builds an Airport & starts building Infantry.

-Our Bomber is raiding Arica. Our Fighter is harrassing the retreating Chilean Infantry, i.e. dropping caimans on them.

Week 43, 1942:

-The Soviets & Japan sign a peace treaty. The other Axis nations follow doing the same with Japan. There was no territory change in Europe from this short war. The Soviets gained Fushun in the East.

The Soviets are still at war with Norway-Denmark.

-Manaus builds a Combat Engineer & starts building a Barracks.

-Our Workers finish clearing the forests of Fortaleza. The forest with Game is left as a nature preserve. (I like tiles that produce food & shields.) They move on to help clear Belem's jungles. Fortaleza no longer needs to build Workers/Engineers.

-Our airforce continues the mission ordered last Week.

-We have 16 Infantry looking down on Arica.

Week 44, 1942:

-Belem builds a Combat Engineer & starts building a Barracks.

-Fortaleza builds a University & starts building an Offshore Platform.

-Disaster! The cultural borders of Georgetown expand so we lose our Gold resource to the British! Now we really have a reason to liberate that place...

-I just noticed that the Sub we had scouting Chile's coast is gone. They must have sunk it a couple of Weeks ago, but I missed seeing it happen. It's hard to concentrate on anything but the chicas on Rio's beaches.

-We just lost all 16 Infantry trying to assault Arica. Ouch! A lesson has been learned: no more unsupported mass Infantry assaults. I knew it was a dumb thing to try, but I have my pride. We can't get artillery over the Andes so we need to make peace with Chile & concentrate on Argentina.

-Chile's Tank is repaired & returns, obviously trying to grab ungarrissoned Curitiba. We rush 2 Infantry from Asuncion to block them.

Week 45, 1942:

-We renew our Rubber for Iron trade with France. They don't ask for any extra Gold this time.

-Chile's Tank attacks Curitiba destroying 1 of our Infantry. They have an Infantry unit in Argentina approaching our territory again.

-Our Bomber destroys the roads on Chile's Coal resource. They won't be building any more Tanks.

To be continued...

Ver 2.5. Brazil. AI most aggressive. Regent.

Week 46, 1942:

-Sao Paulo builds a Manufacturing Plant. It now has all improvements. It is switching to military production starting with a garrison.

-Our Bomber redlines Chile's Tank (apparently, their only Tank) & Infantry from Curitiba destoys it.

Week 47, 1942:

-Puerto Acre builds a Barracks & starts building an Infantry.

-Our airforce is battering the Chilean Infantry coming over the Andes toward Asuncion.

Week 48, 1942:

-Asuncion builds an Infantry for it's garrison & starts building a Library. Back to books.

-Manaus builds a Barracks & starts building a Combat Engineer.

-A Chilean Battleship appears off Montevideo. Our Battleships bombard it, but both miss. Our sailors have been on shore leave for over three years...

-Our Bomber is rebased to Montevideo to help deal with the new, floating threat.

-The Soviets capture Hammerfest!

Week 49, 1942:

-Belem builds a Barracks & starts building a Combat Engineer.

-The Chilean Battleship fires a salvo at Montevideo & withdraws to Argentine waters. Our bomber & Battleships bombard it, but noly do slight damage.

-We send our remaining 3 Subs south so we won't be suprised again by Chilean ships.

Week 50, 1942:

-The Argentines spot our Subs & object to their presence in their waters. We promise to remove them. They are "annoyed" with us.

-Chile declares war on Argentina!!! The Great Gaucho War has begun. Confirmed sub bug this time. My Subs saw the Chilean Battleship move south & run right into Argentina's Sub. A war between them could help me allot.

The Chilean Battleship continues to plow through 3 or 4 Argentine Subs taking more damage before heading south.

-The Soviets demand 100 Gold from me. I give it to them. We need to keep that trade open for now.

-Montevideo builds a Manufacturing Plant. It now has all improvements (that work). It will finish it's garrison & start producing units for war.

-Porto Alegre builds an Infantry & starts building a Granary.

-Curitiba builds an Infantry & starts building a University.

-Our Bomber is shot down by that Chilean Battleship. Our airforce now consists of 1 Fighter... Yay!

-The time has come to unleash our navy. Squads are sent around Montevideo to collect the sailors from the bars & brothels & get them back aboard ship. They manage to sober up enough to get their boilers going & our fleet leaves port in pursuit of that Chilean Battleship. Our Subs continue to shadow it. If the Argentines redline it, they will attack.

-The British capture Okinawa!

-The U.S. captures Hiroshima!

Week 51, 1942:

-We renew our Horses for Aluminum trade with the Soviets.

-The Argentines sink that Chilean Battleship. They pay 1 Battleship & 1 1939 Destroyer lost & 1 1939 Destroyer damaged. All good news for me.:D their fleet continues south.

-Our Subs shadow the Argentine fleet. They spot a damaged Chilean Coastal Defence Ship off Commodore Rivadavia.

-Our surface fleet returns to the brothels of Montevideo. Our sailors are the hardest working sailors in the world!

-Our scholars learn Air 1941. We expect to learn Sea 1941 in 22 Weeks.

-The Chileans are no longer attacking us. They are moving an Infantry towards Peruvian Sucre which is odd. Our Fighter in Asuncion is still strafing them.

-We can see Argentina's Tanks rolling toward Santiago.

Week 52, 1942:

-Argentina captures Santiago! The Chilean capitol is moved to Arica.

-Our subs lose sight of the Chilean Coastal Defence Ship. They continue south shadowing the Argentine Battleship.

I need a break. To be continued...

1942 Recap:

Go back & read the reports.:p

Thoughts & Observations:

Playing Brazil is torture. I'm trying hard to make it fun, but with load times this long & nothing happening many Turns & nothing good to watch on TV while I'm waiting for hours for nothing to happen, I'm extremely tempted to drop the game. I'm only carrying on because Brazil needs playtests.

I'm not reporting disease or civil disorder outbreaks anymore. We are having them every Week, though.

I'm not reporting every Infantry unit we build, just the ones that are being built for emergency wartime purposes, i.e. to keep Asuncion from being captured.

Similar to China, it looks like Brazil has no special units. I have gained several techs & resources, but can still only make the same units I could make at the start of the game. It would help make playing these nations allot more fun if the tech tree did anything at all for them. Everytime, I get a new tech, I rush to see what new units or improvements I can build only to be disappointed again & again & again. Extreme boredom.

Brazil could have some fun flavor units that wouldn't upset the game's balance. How about a Native Blowgunner (weak, but can move quickly through Jungle) or a Bush Plane (cheap recon air unit) or some kind of riverboat to represent the importance of river travel in Brazil during this time period? Units like these wouldn't make Brazil more powerful, but they would make Brazil allot more fun to play.

Great Britain has done amazingly well.

The unaligned countries are getting involved in conflict which is good. They all stayed neutral & peaceful throughout my last 2 games. If the Soviets especially don't enter the war, it changes the whole game drastically.

May the new year bring some action; ANY action.

Week 1, 1943:

-Agentina declares war on us! Sub bug again. Their Heavy Cruiser smacked into one of our Subs. We lose 3 Subs, they lose one 1939 Destroyer plus another damaged.

They invade us with several Tanks destroying 3 Combat Engineers & capturing one Worker. Next Week, they will probably take Asuncion & Porto Alegre.

-Our cities build some stuff. Yadda yadda yadda.

I'm quitting the game at this point. Playing Brazil is totally unpleasant. I don't know how I lasted this long. Sorry, folks. I want to have fun playing Civ & my time is precious. I have the game saved at Week 52, 1942 so I can return to it if I need more torture.

I hope this playtest helped a bit.

I'm going to download version 2.6 & play as either the Soviets or Japan. I know that will be fun.

From my 2nd playtest with the US Convoy being produced in Augusta every 68 turns holding 60 units, the US AI did bring it over, fully loaded, to Germany and took Brest, although it sat in port at Augusta for quite some time waiting for escorts. I forgot to disable the Democracy required settings for the wonders of French cities Toulouse and Bordeaux (so Germany razed them). It seems this is way too often to be built; and in fact, since Soviet Russia is so overpowered in this scenario, a US Convoy like this would end the game for the Axis by mid 1941. Especially since it's rare Japan does a good job in the pacific.

My only solution would be to let the US develop 1 (and only 1) US super convoy around mid 1943. Once the wonder auto-produces the convoy unit, when the US discovers a 1945 tech, this would make the unit obsolete, so no more would be produced. This would allow the US to launch a massive invasion force, but would prevent it from becoming overly powerful. In this case, the unit should be make very very powerful, but also slow, so the US could not just go around, taking everything from everyone.

*** EDIT: Unforatunately autoproduction frequency cannot be set over 100 turns
and also, by 1943 Italy's Africa holdings are usually taken over by Great Britain at this time, so it would not effect that. Japan could be an issue, but by 1943 US was making large assaults also, so if US brings it over to Germany and then to Japan in 1944, this would be realistic.

But this would only work if Soviet Russia is made less powerful. And historically, only 1 change would need to be made to accomplish this.

The T-34/76 is discovered in Land 1940, and is incredibly cheap to produce (at 180 shields). The T-34/76 was not this inexpensive until 1943 (where the cost dropped in half). Soviet Union's cost for the T-34/76 1941 model was 270,000 rubles; 1942 model was 193,000 rubles; 1943 model was 135,000 rubles ... and in comparison the T-34/85 was 164,000 rubles.

Therefore, in order to simulate this, the Land 1940 T-34/76 cost in shields should be much higher (240+), and in 1942 drop down (to 180). This would be simple enough by making the exact same unit available in Land 1942 which makes the Land 1940 model obsolete. Because historically, this is accurate, and it was not until much later, where the masses overtook the Germans.

Right now, the Germans are swamped on every side, and never make the push they actually did. It's likely, that with all the defenses Moscow and Leningrad have, Germany AI won't be able to take these cities anyway.

And the Axis powers tend to go to war all the time with Soviet Russia anyway when Japan is an AI player, so this keeps the scenario realistic. When Soviet Russia gets Land 1942, they start mass producing the T-34/76, and then in 1944 the 1 auto-produced US Convoy would arrive and simulate a D-Day landing. Germany would still at this point be strong, but would have massive hurdles to face in order to survive the onslaught from both fronts.

This would be as realistic of a change as could be made, without doing too much to the scenario. And I believe it could work very well. Most of the time, Germany is only able to have about 40-50 panzers at any given time (the rest of the time they keep hordes of defensives units in their cities), while Soviet Russia has over 200+ KV-1's and T-34's... this makes it impossible for Germany to do anything.

Ok, I am doing a playtest, as an incredibly rich Finland :) to observe the AI:

Changes:
Augusta Wonder: Autoproduce US Convoy every 100 turns, August wonder requires Air 1941 to be discovered first. Is made obsolete by a 1945 advance. Only 1 US Convoy should be produced (to my understanding). US Convoy will hold 60 units, have a speed of 5, require no escorts, def 100 HP 20 (just for playtest purposes).

T-34/76 Land 1940 Shield cost increased to 245. (upgrades to 1942 Model, so both will not show)
T-34/76 Land 1942 Model added at the regular 180 shield cost.

Type 95 Ha-Go does not require rubber.

Germany builds production often (just to see if this helps)

Japanese Infantry have 3 HP bonus instead of 2, and 12 def...

Perhaps Japanese Infantry units should be given a 3 HP bonus instead of a 2... after all once they were dug in on those islands, they were incredibly difficult to defeat, not without causing huge causualties to Allied forces. This would portray their relentless defense, and the fact that they would not surrender. This may help Japan hold on to Islands in the Pacific longer.

I think that a lot of nations in this game have a unit problem.

I know that this is historically correct. However, this game is set up for 600 turns and therefore could end 1951 (did I calculate right :) ). This means it does have a non-history-proven component and should therefore allow nations like Italy, Japan, Finland which survive until 1945 or later to then get some really nice tough units.

It seems strange that Axis military strength is so different until the very end of the game. If I was Italy at 1946 and see all those SS 1944 tanks around me but I basically have some Fiat Senators with machine guns to attack, I was gonna call the Fuhrer and ask for the tank cook book.

There should be unit upgrades and new units in 1945 ( i know Italy has one there) and AFTER 1945. I was (even as Germany) really disappointed that Land 1 and 2 of 1945 did not get me anything new. There should be infantery upgrades (at least a moderate increase in attack/defense 14/16 with AA defense1), maybe allow the SS infantery to be produced from then on.

Air 1945 or a later one could allow Paratroopers, Sea 1945 or a later Sea tech could allow Marines to be produced. I know they were historically not produced in large quantities but this game exceeds the time this war lasted in history. So when I had researched all techs in mid 1943 (Sid level) I could not imagine going on with about 380 turns to come with no more techs, no more units. This is the place where I think this game should now speculate how it might have gone on. Because in my game, a Germany that strong would have invented new weapons, new techs, it would have built nuclear plants( new city improvements should be included in the game with later techs).

T-34/76 Land 1940 Shield cost increased to 245. (upgrades to 1942 Model, so both will not show)
T-34/76 Land 1942 Model added at the regular 180 shield cost.

I think this is a good idea. The problem ist that the game is slightly unbalanced in 1940/1941 when it comes to Russia. The first assault upon Germany is mostly lethal for the masses of strong tanks they are able to throw at Germany. The production of T34/76 should definitely be slowed down first. Later they should be able to produce faster (maybe shields 120). Once Germany has Panthers and SS tanks the Soviets are no longer competitive regarding the strength of their best single unit. They now need the mass production of units to compensate for that.

In my game, once I had survived the Soviet rush (mid 1940 until beginnings of 1941 they sent about 100 T34/76 and 80 KV-1), the Soviets were beaten and could never recover from that. They seemed to have stopped researching also, never made it to there best available tank. With Panthers ans SS tanks, I took a walk from Leningrad to Moscow till I reached Vladivostok (my total losses were 2 tanks and 3 infantery, 2 fighters).

I hope this playtest helped a bit.

Well, thanks for all your effort. The insights into the gameplay and the entertaining writing made it worth following yout test.

I understand your quitting as I recently tried playing Turkey and that was boring in the begining and disastrous in the end when the Soviets chose me as their exclusive target of agression.

Japan or Russia will be a completely different game (much easier), so make sure you choose a higher difficulty level to get some challenge that matches your Brasil game.

After all, a couple of weeks at the Brasil beaches are never a waste of time. Just make sure to protect yourself at all times... :)

One more thing, in general:

to really make it worthwhile to play a small non-aligned nation, there must be the possibility to conclude mutual protection pacts with other nations. When I played Turkey, Germany was gracious to me because of our trades and the smokeable "herbs" I was regularly sending to the Hauptquartier. :)

But Germany just watched how Russia was rolling over me and took my strategically important country. There was no chance to encounter those early assaults Russia always seems to conduct against human players, even if the just play Hamudistan or the Independent Federation of Waikiki Islands.

Well, ALL of these nations could have become Axis nations as well. If the British invaded Norway first there was a chance of Norway becoming Axis! IMO it is better they stayed out of alliances

Finland Playtest, slight variations to test AI vs AI balance
- SID difficulty 2.5/6 Modified Playtest, AI most aggressive, AI Workers enabled, 1 US Super Convoy produced by Augusta sometime in 1943?, reloads to place spies and track AI movements and progress, Japanese Inf 11/12/1 w/3HP Bonus, Type 95 Ha-Go does not require rubber, Germany builds Production often, Soviet T-34/76 costs changed

Week 36, 1939 - Germany takes Danzig (Poland).
Week 39, 1939 - Germany takes Radom (Poland). Germany takes Warsaw (Poland). *** Poland Destroyed ***. Germany takes Amsterdam (Netherlands). Germany takes Rotterdam (Netherlands). *** Netherlands Defeated in Europe ***. France takes Rotterdam (Germany). Quite Eventful for 1 turn!
Week 40, 1939 - Germany takes Rotterdam (France). Germany takes Antwerp (Belgium).
Week 41, 1939 - Japan takes Manila (US).
Week 42, 1939 - France takes Antwerp (Germany).
Week 44, 1939 - Germany takes Antwerp (France). Germany takes Brussels (Belgium). *** Belgium Defeated in Europe ***.
Week 46, 1939 - Japan takes Ningpo (China).
Week 48, 1939 - Germany takes Verdun (France). Japan takes and razes Yenan (Communist-China). Japan takes Amoy (China). Japan playing slightly better than usual, compared to my other playtests.
Week 50, 1939 - Germany takes Lille (France). France re-takes Verdun (Germany).
Week 51, 1939 - Japan takes Lanchow (Communist-China). Germany has researched Land 1940 and has Panzer IIIG.
Week 52, 1939 - Germany takes Verdun (France). France takes Tripoli (Italy-Africa).
Week 1, 1940 - France re-takes Verdun (Germany). Japan takes Ansi (Communist-China).
Week 2, 1940 - Germany takes Verdun (France).
Week 3, 1940 - Japan takes Su-Chou (Communist-China).
Week 5, 1940 - Germany takes Paris (France).
Week 7, 1940 - France re-takes Verdun, again! (Germany). Germany takes Bordeaux (France). Germany takes Toulouse (France). France takes Bisciara (Italy-Africa). Soviet Russia demands 100 gold, I give it to them.
Week 8, 1940 - Germany takes Verdun (France). Great Britain takes Tobruk (Italy-Africa).
Week 9, 1940 - Germany takes Marseilles (France). Germany takes Lyon (France). Brazil declares war on Argentina!
Week 10, 1940 - Germany's city production looks much better! All of the coastal cities are building naval units, and most all of the land cities are building Panzers! Usually it is not like this, many cities usually excessively build Mech Infantry units.
Week 11, 1940 - Great Britain takes and razes Mogadishu (Italy-Africa). Japan's progress appears to be similar to other games so far. Here is the reason why the U.S. never has much of a navy, because all of the coastal cities only build land units. Not 1 coastal city was building a ship, they were all building land based units. Perhaps in the editor (such as the build often) should be changed to only air and naval units, with def and off ground units unchecked; The land cities would still have to build these anyway.
Week 13, 1940 - Germany takes Brest (France). Doing a quick check of forces, I am showing that the US has 3 loaded transports heading towards Germany, instead of Cagliari; it must be the victory point locations that I placed in Germany that is causing this! It needs to be figured out how to make the US coastal cities only produce naval units, and that may solve the problem and make the US more active in the global affair.
Week 14, 1940 - Germany takes Strasbourg (France). *** France Defeated in Europe ***. HA!!!!! Oh my! I doubt this has EVER happened before - Persia takes Benghazi (Italy-Africa). *** Italy Defeated in North Africa ***. That has to be the first time I have ever seen Persia take a city! Japan takes Kweilin (China). Great Britain learns Land 1940. I am surprised Japan has not run over a Russian sub yet.
Week 16, 1940 - Soviet Russia has learned Land 1940.
Week 17, 1940 - Germany takes and razes Gibraltar (Great Britain). Japan takes Chang-sha (China).
Week 19, 1940 - Japan takes Liuzhou (China).
Week 20, 1940 - German coastal cities all building naval ships, inner cities now building a variety of air and land units (about 1/3rd panzers, 1/3rd aircraft, 1/3 defensive). US coastal and inner cities all building either land units or improvements, no naval whatsoever! Soviet Russia building mostly production improvements (factories, etc...) and some research improvements, along with few military. US build priorities are a big problem. Japanese mainland building mostly naval, Japanese in China building mostly land.
Week 21, 1940 - US takes Cagliari (Italy), I guess their transports changed direction. Japan has produced no Type 95 Ha-Go's, prefers the better Type 97.
Week 23, 1940 - Soviet Russia is not being near as aggressive this game, instead it is happily building improvements. Great Britain is sending all of its transports down around Africa (I guess heading for Japan??), perhaps some coastal cities in France, Belgium and Netherlands should have victory point locations, to make these transports attack Germany. To be continued....

Week 25, 1940 - Strange, there is a French transport with a Marine all the way over by Japanese held city of Truk!
--- It appears having the T-34/76 has had a bad effect on Soviet Russia AI, now they do not declare war on anyone... and they are not building many more advanced tanks. Perhaps 245 shields per T-34/76 Model 1940 was too much, I will lower it to 220. They are simply building Motorized Rifle Div 1939's. Also, since troops cannot get into Germany any other way than by transport (they never go through Russian territory), no one is attacking Germany, all transports are going around Africa and heading towards Japan. I am ending this playtest, and will make some revisions to see if I can't get US to build naval units.

Rocoteh -
Playing as France, Regent, Week 16, 1946

I expect this to be my next-to-last post for this game - the reason will become clear...

Week 48, 1945- Germany declares war on the Soviet Union
Wk 48 - I again capture Antwerp, and, just to spread the wealth (sarcasm!), gift it to the Chinese
Wk 49 - Germany recaptures Antwerp
Wk 52 - I capture the former Portugese town of Lubango from the Soviets

Week 4, 1946 - Soviets take Mangnai from the Chinese (I saw that one coming as soon as China took it from Japan!)
Wk 5 - Allies sign peace treaty with the Soviet Union; Germany re-takes Zagreb from Soviet forces
Wk 7 - Spain and the Soviets sign a peace treaty; I capture Freiburg from Germany
Wk 9 - Once again, I capture Antwerp. However, in a flash of Machiavellian inspiration, I gift it to BRAZIL, hoping to broaden the war (and line up the next-most-powerful nation [after the Allies and Soviets] against Germany) (Also, that was a nod to Maimonides, for his superhuman perseverance in the Brazil play-test!!)

Week 10 - the start of a very, very bad 7 weeks for the Axis (what's left of them)
Wk 10 - Soviets retake Zagreb from Germans
Wk 11 - Soviets recapture Vilnius from Germans
Wks 11 and 12 - Soviets effectively finish off (I swear, no pun intended) Finland - Soviets capture Vaasa; Tampere, and Turku, and raze Helsinki! - Finnish capital moved to Kuopio
Wk 13 - Soviets take Radom from Germans
Wk 14 - Soviets take Warsaw from Germans
Wk 15 - Soviets raze Konigsberg and capture Danzig
Wk 16 - Soviets raze Stettin and capture Rostock
Wk 16 - I feel like I'm plucking the pennies off the eyes of a dead man, but I take Stuttgart from the Germans

Since the 'house rules' for victory in 2.5 say that occupation of Berlin is the sole victory condition for the Soviets, I'm afraid I'm only 3 or 4 turns, tops, from the Soviets winning this one. They're parked in Rostock now, right next to Berlin, so the end is coming soon for the Thousand Year Reich....
I'll report back when that occurs, just to close this playtest out.

Rocoteh (and others), I hope my reports have given you some insights/data to use. One of the things I love about this scenario is that it is not static - you're always working to make it better. And I really love all the activty on this board, too - it's nice to be even a small part of such a vibrant community of Civ3 players!
For my part, this has been a fun game - very, very different, playing as the 'junior partner' in the Allied endeavor!! I've never played as the USSR, Britain, or Germany - been trying to work my way up to "The Big Leagues"! But a go as the Soviet Union is definitely next on my agenda, in version 2.6.

On the subject of adding Norway/Denmark, Greece, and Yugoslavia to the Allied side -

I'm in favor of adding Norway/Denmark, definitely. I don't think I have EVER seen the German AI attack even Copenhagen, which is right on their back porch! And of course the Germans actually DID capture Narvik early on, too. So from a historical standpoint, as well as from the standpoint of trying to prod the German AI, I fully support adding Norway/Denmark to the Allied fold.
I don't agree with adding Yugoslavia, and I'm on the fence with Greece. My history is a little rusty, but wasn't Tito pretty fanatical about maintaining Yugoslavian independence (I mean maintaining Yugoslavia's freedom to pursue their own courses of action, without consultation/agreement from outside parties?)

Tito didn't come to power until after the war; but that was his attitude, and
he had the stones to tell Stalin to go jump in a lake in 1948. Historically, what happened in Yugoslavia was that a relatively pro-German government was overthrown in late 1940 or early 1941, and replaced by a government that tried to be neutral. Hitler was enraged, and ordered an invasion.

Just some info on the Italian positions in East Africa. Initially, the Italian forces vastly outnumbered the British. Italy had 250,000 troops (70000 Italian, 180000 native) spread throughout the area. Although they held out until late 1941, a few more troops in that area would represent such a large force and help them from getting beaten so quickly (although in some games they do hold out for a very long time, so it is probably okay). Also, the Red Sea Flotilla could be added although it was small, 8 subs and 7 destroyers, perhaps as a single unit.
