Xbox 360 vs. PlayStation 3. What should I ask for Christmas?

I would probably get a PS3 if I had to choose. However, all the gaming I do is on PC. IIRC the 360 is quite a bit older than the PS3 and Microsoft is probably coming out with a new Xbox in the next few years.

I haven't really been paying much attention, but my understanding is that both Sony and Microsoft are working on releasing a new console in the next year or so.

I like my Xbox360. Not only is the game library impressive, but we use it for most of the TV in our house. It easily ports with ESPN, Netflix and our Xfinity TV, and their online store is convenient. Their selection of downloadable indie games is pretty nice too.

If you could use a BlueRay player, the PS3 helps with that, but if not, the sheer abundance of cheap games and flexibility of the Xbox make it the better choice, in my opinion.

You can buy a used Xbox360 for like, 100 bucks. That investment shouldn't prevent you from buying the next Xbox in 2 years.

And like I said, that sort of stuff only gets better when you add Windows 8 into the mix.

I am not interested in that.

I don't blame you. I thought it would be really cool, but now that I know it's only a bit more powerful than a PS3 or XBox360, I realize that it will turn into a gimmick like the Wii after a year or two. What a stupid move on their part. Why do they keep making the same mistakes? Why not merge your new interface devices with powerful hardware?

As one Italian game blogger says, pick the console where the exclusives that you like are.

I'm not really very informed about it, but on the PS3 you've got the Uncharted, Rachet & Clank, Gran Turismo, Killzone sagas. On the 360 there's Halo, Forza Motorsport/Horizon, Gears Of War and some others i can't recall.

I've got a ps3 and I'm quite happy with it.

You say you download all your movies? The ps3 has much much better dlna support than the Xbox. This means if you pick up a software package like Tversity ($4) you can stream from your comp to your ps3 without having to bother hooking up your comp to the tv each time.

Also, I echo the sentiments that the majority of Xbox exclusives are available on the PC.

The PS3 has better exclusive titles in my opinion. The Uncharted series is fantastic and the Infamous series is decent. Of the X-box exclusives only Mass Effect has ever wowed me.

Free on-line was the decider for me. If you want to play online, the PS3 is cheaper hands down. It can also do most of the media platform stuff that the Xbox can.

Wii has the best party games. Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart, and Mario Party.

The motion controller. One of life's rare pleasures is waving that stupid thing around while super-drunk.

It does have that, but at the same time, I don't spend most of my video game playing time while at parties. I would like a depth of one-player or online games to play and the Wii comes up very short in this regard. While the Wii U will get some of these (and hopefully they are trying hard to win over the 3rd party developers that ditched the Wii) in the short term, I think it will face the same fundamental problem the Wii did in the long term: low processing power relative to the other machines.

Edit: I own a Wii and do not own a PS3 or Xbox 360, so my assessment comes from a pro-Wii perspective.

The Mass Effect Trilogy is now available on PS3.

I've always found the PS3 to be superior... but if there is a new generation coming out, wait for that, and in the meanwhile play Civ4 BtS until it gets cheap enough.
