XCOM spreads CIV love!

Fought a base defence mission yesterday. All went pretty well (largely thanks to my base's good defensive layout) until 6 of my elite guys died due to ONE FRAKKING BLASTERBOMB HIT  Half of what was left of course panicked and started running around like scared little girls. One guy got mindcontrolled and shot one of the few veterans left in the back with a heavy laser, so I had to execute him for treason. All in all, I lost 11 guys in the base defence mission, and would have lost many more if I hadn't remembered I had a tank :cringe:

Seriously, blaster launchers NEED to be in the new X-COM

thankfully, 'my' aliens aren't using blasters yet.....

Watch from 9:00 - the video illustrates why people want to throw the computer out the window sometimes when playing X-COM ;)

Link to video.

This player is terrible. The moment he saw the opening crossfire at the entrance to his ship, he should have been throwing grenades close to where the aliens were from within the ship. Instead, he pulled a Brannigan.

He also doesn't keep enough TUs for reaction shots or crouching for cover. I always keep a reaction shot for troops on the front line, if only to slow down the alien turn enough so I see where the shots are coming from and which way they are walking.

IIRC this guy regularly beats TFTD on superhuman/ironman difficulty with no problems. His problem here is that he's too used to his TFTD playstyle which is why he actually loses this campaign

BTW, news from the front (my new X-COM1 game): I lost 4 people and two tanks trying to capture a landed harvester at night - I was about to lose so I gave up and ran. I shot down the UFO and tried again, losing 5 more guys, mainly due to the fact that my two most elite soldiers turned out to be incredibly vulnerable to mind control :cringe:

What difficulty do you usually play?

As someone who never got to play TFTD, I don't know how different the playstyles are. Is there simply more or less cover on the ocean floor, or did they mess around with the game mechanics?

My favorite missions were the early-game ones where the aliens would land in farming country. I'd watch an alien go into a barn, and then fire a rocket in right after him and blow the place up. I still laugh just thinking about it.

Well I've swapped to have Oct 9th off and am working next Saturday instead. XCom on its own, probably wouldn't have done it, but the 9th also being the release of the Mass Effect Retaliation MP DLC.... ooooohhhh boy. I'm gonna get me a case of REAL coke (none of this sprite zero crap), bags of Cheese puffs, and am making a day of it!

For everyone who hasn't played TFTD. The following is a recipe for dying:

He deserved it. That's no way to disembark!

Yeah, in TFTD the aliens use grenades much more effectively. I learned it the hard way as well.

It's little changes, mostly. From what I've seen, the aliens in TFTD don't move around the map that much, so the guy in the video is used to a sniper-spotter tactic to deprive the aliens of reaction fire kills. The maps are generally bigger which makes this tactic pretty effective. He was quite surprised that it didn't work that well in X-COM1.

The transport sub also doesn't have a ramp as the Skyranger, so it's easier to clear the surrounding area quickly. In X-COM1, getting out of the craft is a nightmare even with smoke grenades. I use tanks to soak up the first reaction shot, other people use rookies ;) They're cheaper, but I am a good guy and don't want my soldiers to die needlessly.

I love it when you see an aliens head behind the window and your guy actually hits it instead of wasting his TUs shooting everything but the target. That's so satisfying.

Already started pre-loading.

Winner, this isn't XCOM related, but thought you might see it here. Saw on steam today a sale for for a DLC for some game called ARMA 2, and the DLC is "Army of the Czech Republic" so I thought of you and thought I'd pass along the info.

And yeah, I've started pre-loading my XCOM on steam now as well. Did that become available today?

News from the front:

1st terror mission against Snakemen/Chryssalids - total alien pwnage, zero losses. Use of tanks/flying suit-wearing soldiers with heavy lasers for sniper support.

Before that I fought another base defence mission. This time I lost just 4 soliders, 2 of them due to alien mind control/subsequent execution for treason. I now have a "mindbait", a soldier with extraordinarily low psi-strength whom I will take (unarmed) to missions where I expect heavy trouble with mind-controllers. I now have two psi-labs and am in the process of screening my troops. Then I'll start repaying the aliens with the same coin.

BTW, a funny picture I accidentally stumbled upon:

I don't see beer.

I'll be stuck with the classic version tonight (I hate paying full price for a new release), but man, the new one looks good.
