Yet Another Falklands Flare Up

Yeah, but they've just fallen for some sort of systematic populism employed by politicians whenever they have to cover up their own screwups. Like ranting against the EU in Britain ;)

People aren't idiots, if they are told a lie they won't believe it automatically. I take it they will think about it and come up with their own ideas. In this case they side with their pathetic government.

... why is a colonial country complaining about colonialism anyway?

For Argentina to claim anti-colonial credentials for an argument based on a Spanish claim is a joke.

And when you consider Argentina's complicity in the total genocide of Tierra del Fuego's indigenous population (which took place barely a century ago, and so cannot be blamed on 'European' colonialism) it's a particularly tasteless one.

It's not colonial unless its on a different continent.

:doublefacepalm:
Please stop, my face hurts.

(are you being serious right now?)

I've got a superb sarcasm detector and I believe he is taking what we call in Britain the piss.

PIP PIP

Falklands heating up again you say? :coffee: Time to bring FP out of retirement then.

Not just sarcasm, but satire. The Argentine claim really isn't much stronger than CELTIC's parody.

It plays better to the international audience than the aggressive expansionism Argentina's claim actually represents.

Other colonial expansionist powers include Russia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Turkey, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand,

Actually, pretty much everyone.

As much as I feel the islanders best interests would be served by remaining part of Britain, I can't help but think it would be quite awesome to have a whole new thing to take the piss out of my British friends about.

At least that's a better argument than Argentina has put forward

But who knows when they're going to start drilling for oil somewhere nearby, eh?

Pretty soon.

But in the end, the Falklands, geographically, belong more to the Argentina than they do to the UK, and it would make sense in the long term for them to exercise sovereignty over them. If anyone must.

And Canada is closer to Greenland than Denmark. Should they annex it for the good of the Commonwealth?

And the Dominican Republic is closer to Puerto Rico than the USA. Should the DR annex it?

And Israel is closer to the Gaza strip than the rest of the Palestinian territories are. Should Israel annex Gaza?

Other colonial expansionist powers include Russia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Turkey, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand,

Ah, well on their way to becoming a potential superpower I see...

Isn't it funny that the popular/socialist/peronist/bolivarian government of Cristina K. uses exactly the same tactic as the military junta to divert domestic attention from the terrible state of the nation?

Indeed. And if they didn't have the Falklands to obsess about, you know they'd only be picking a fight with Chile instead.

How many lives were lost in '82? Was it worth it? Would it be worth it again?

Hm, does that mean we could construe the UK's refusal to give up the islands as a contribution to peace in the region?

I'm just asking because we'll need to come up with someone to get next years Nobel peace prize.

Maybe Maggie should've got the prize back in '82, since the British victory meant that Argentina's planned attack on the Beagle Islands (likely resulting in a war with Chile) got cancelled.
