ZPNESVI Discussion Thread (Nesse)

To Wolf Clan

Clan Masada would consider providing a scouting and tracking contingent to the army on the same terms as the Bears' are pushing for. Like the Bears we have shown ourselves to be capable soldiers, independent of the experiences of the army, and do not believe that anything it proposes will in-fact make us better at what we do. However, there are some things we might like to learn, that we don't already do, so Clan Masada proposes to have its men-folk cycle through the regular army so that we might learn and in time we will be capable of providing a reserve that may be called up in the advent of war.

P.S. The barbs don't like you, so could please stop tarring us all your backstabbing brush, some of us actually have a working relationship with them.

To Fire Clan

Could room be made for Clan Masada? We should like to be able to stake out an area for our own uses in exchange a contingent will be provided us for scouting and tracking.

House Demetrii would like to offer its services in designing and constructing irrigation systems to the Rothunia and Warmani clans for a small nominal fee.

@alex I think these are both NPC for the time being. So, I'd say they are both interested in this.

The Fiddling Conclave has become fairly skilled at the production of laminate leather armor as well as composite bows, and we are willing to devote the Workshop to the production of these products for use in the military, providing them to the army for just a few coins above cost.

If it were possible, with help from several working clans, we might be able to reduce the fighting power of the Cyrian Horde by choosing where the battle takes place. If we can devote time and resources to a carefully selected site, the working clans should be able to design a series of traps and barriers that will hinder, kill, ensnare, and channel the Cyrian armies into narrow places where Nessian archers might tear them to bits, and small bands of warriors could face small bands of Cyrians, taking the Horde down piecemeal.

Also, if we could be given the opportunity, we might be able to produce spyglasses of unparalleled quality, enabling Nessian scouts to estimate the power of the Cyrian threat before it ever reaches us. A few of our thinkers have been drawing up designs for vehicles that emulate birds, enabling our scouts to reach untouchable heights that will give our exploratory efforts a massive edge.

Alternatively, if we can find a volcano (isn't there one near Nabar?) we might be able to engineer a method of directing the magma out of it safely and without eruption, turning that lava into a great weapon which, theoretically, will annihilate the Cyrian Horde completely. Sure, these are some big projects, but it might even go so far as to making this fight easy.

This war, assuming we choose it, will NOT be easy. We know of the Cyrians. They have defeated larger cities than Nesse, and they have crushed larger armies than ours.

Do not delude yourselves. No amount of laminate armor or clever inventions will prevent the hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of our countrymen, from death. Lessen the number of deaths, perhaps. But it will be a battle unlike any other in our city's history.

If you are prepared for that, embrace this war. But it is not a war that we will all survive.

No kingdom or realm goes to far believing they will lose no lives. It is the price of preserving our freedom, and those that die will be honored and respected for their sacrifice. The Ninticus Clan embraces this war completely. It is our duty to defend these walls, and that is what we plan to do. We believe that the Fiddling Conclave is on the right track in believing that the place in which we battle will be gravely important, and that if we can prepare many traps and defences we could very well defeat the Cyrians. While we shouldn't be hopelessly optimistic about this war, we mustn't give up all hope. We must throw our full weight behind preparing our defences and strategies for this war.

Also, have we really learned of any other enemies of the Cyrians besides the barbarians that surround us? That old map that we were shown before revealed a far off city that was at war with the Cyrians, and it's likely that many other people's have had to deal with the Cyrians as well. If we can coordinate with others that oppose the Cyrians, we could pressure their empire from many directions, and even attack it from within, bringing the Cyrians to their knees.

House Demetrii finds the prospect of war with the Cyrians to be a grim one indeed. They have mighty hosts, led by excellent commanders; for have they not conquered much of the world? It seems folly to think that we would be able to trick such men with such simple strategies.\

House Demetrii would like to announce that it has designed a military weapon that we shall call the ballista. We have begun production of these weapons for use in the defense of The City as well as the adjacent settlements in addition to some for usage on the battlefield.

BananaLee has told me to tell you all that he will be away for a few days. Any issues being brought to the Senate are to be PMed to him so that he doesn't lose it.

We also need an idea of the forces we will be able to commit against the Cyrians. Can all groups, armies, clans and tribes make themselves known now.

Also, Daft, what do we know about the numbers of the Cyrians?

Now to Fire Clan business.

To: The Masada Clan
You may join our expeditionary force as scouts and trackers. We thank you for your assistance.

To: The Bear Clan
As long as you pass everything with us first, you may attempt to garner an alliance.

The Fiddlers also do not expect this war to be an easy one, which is why we are attempting to come up with ideas that might even the odds a little more in our favor. Allies will be wonderful, but that is not our area of expertise. We design, invent and build things. As long as the Cyrian Horde is not barreling down on our gates immediately, we should have enough time to prepare delays, ambushes, diversions, and all other manner of obstacles before they reach the city. If their numbers can be thinned, their men demoralized, and their attentions split, the walls of Nesse will hold against their masses. We are already greatly occupied with other projects, but this will not prevent us to aid in the planning phase, if others are willing to commit to a prepared defense of Nessian lands.

TO: House of the Hooded Order
FROM: The Fiddling Conclave

It is going to take some time to get the new sewers functional, and in the meantime people are still falling ill and dying. We know you are doing all that you can, but we still wish to help in any way possible. It is understood that your people do not like to stay in one place for long, but it might be best for the people of Nesse if we organized at least a temporary hospital where the sick might be treated over the long-term. We have learned much in the ways of human biology, and your people know much in the ways of medicine. Perhaps, with our efforts combined, as well as those of any willing to volunteer their services as bedside nurses and errand runners, we might be able to at least slow the progress of this plague in our city's streets until the source of the sickness can be dealt with adequately. With many people moving into the newer parts of Nesse, many buildings are left uninhabited, and with time taken for inspection, we might be able to find a large, empty structure that is still stable despite the recent earthquake. If this could be converted into a dedicated hospital until the sickness is gone, we might have a better chance at combating it.

To Masada and Bear Clans

This 'Rule' does not apply to groups, only individuals. Your groups will join the army as allies, or for lack of better term, auxiliaries. (Similar to the Roman Legion/auxiliary system.)

To Fire Clan

We will send a representative with your expedition.

As merchants, we Lucans don't possess soldiers or fighters to send against the cyrians, but we will be funding the supplies for our army.

The House of the Horned King promises swift and favorable judgement from our Hornèd Lord to those who fight in the armies of Nesse against the threat of the Cyrians, who encroach upon his chosen city and seek to take it as a bandit does a virgin priestess.

The watchmen will keep the city safe. Good luck. Our ways of life depends on this.

OOC: Sorry, I forgot to reply!

From: Clan Silivus
To: The Fiddlers

We hear word that you have made a new mixture called concrete, which we believe would be very useful in our line of work. We ask that when you are able to aquire the proper ingredients for this concrete that you teach our masons how to make it.

TO: Silivus
FROM: Fiddlers

We have made quite a few breakthroughs, yes, and just in time as well. Assuming we can secure some kind of agreement with Nabar in obtaining the materials we need from their mines (likely traded for dyes or woodcrafts that we have crafted), we should be able to produce adequate amounts of the material for future construction.

As we have little economic ground to stand on at the moment (what with so much of our manpower being dedicated to arms/armor and the waterworks project), it would be in our best interests to not completely share the recipe for this material at this time. We are, however, willing to work together with your workers in the future to produce great constructions for the good of Nesse. We can supply the concrete, and your men can build with it. For now, let us simply work in unison to finish this aqueduct in time to spare the whole of Nesse from a grim, diseased death.

We look forward eagerly to working with your skilled builders now and in the future!

While House Ìademos is busy fortifying our Magistracy against further attacks, we will send envoys to act as messengers between the army and the Outlander bands, and between the armies and the City. They will also record the campaign for future posterity.

From: House Ìademos
To: Clan Silivus

We are planning a larger series of walls around Iaeda, giving the town room to grow into a city. We are also planning to build a stone citadel. This will require more stone than we initially thought.

To compensate for this, we have contracted another Outlander Clan to open a quarry near Iaeda. If you were willing to continue working on this more extensive project, we would be open to providing you stone at a discounted rate for use in your other jobs. We hope you find our offer acceptable.

Umm I forgot to ask, how long a term does the Moderator serve? Is it for life? Theres an issue that the passage of time in each update is ambiguous (I like that word :)), but I could work out a countdown or something, if its needed.

Also, Daft, what do we know about the numbers of the Cyrians?

Yeah something else thats ambiguous... But its hard to know exactly how many they have, unless/until you start fighting.

It certainly looks bigger than all Nessian fighting dudes put together. But Nesse might have a bigger portion of 'Elite' warriors. And you know, most their other soldiers are probably not so good in skirmish kinda fighting that the Outlanders are good at.

Well, I'm technically the one who organizes the elections, so here's my take on it.

Constitutionally, the Moderator can keep being re-elected every 10 years for life. But it's annoying to hold a new election after every update.

So, because the passage of time is so long-term in this NES, I'll hold a new election for Moderator when Daft announces that the old Moderator is dead, or Nessers and Elites openly call for a new election. If that doesn't happen, assume the Moderator gets re-elected.

I think that's best.

Any response to my PM soon daft? :D

The Cyrian Army is large. It will have problem with supplies.

Therefore, what we need to win this war is fast, maneuverable troops. These troops should be able rush in, destroy the supply caravans, and even perhaps raid enemy farmland and burn it, leaving the army to wither from the vines.

I ask the Elites how about using the horses themselves instead of chariots, which are slow to turn around, to transport warriors quickly and raid them?

If this is not possible, we cannot hope to defeat the Cyrians in a head on fight. We must have tactical advantage over the enemy.

If the enemy goes into the forest, we must not hesitate to burn them to the ground in order to scatter their troops. If the enemy goes through a valley, we can shower them with rocks. If the enemy cooks their food at night, we can shower them with arrows from darkness.

As the enemy forces are too large, ambushes by itself will have limited effects as, although we will kill many enemies, the rest will just get organized soon after and retaliate, which will annhiliate the ambushing force.

If we fight this war, we must throw away all sense of honor. Any tricks that will result in our favor must be used. We must use spies to tell what the enemy is planning. We must use assassins if doing so will confuse the enemy. We must not let the enemy sleep if they approach our heartland. We must engage in quick nighttime raids against their supplies and barracks and make the enemy dread each coming night. One night without sleep will make any man tired. Two nights will make him so lethargic that he can be counted as dead. 3 nights will drive anyone insane.

That, is what the Watchmen thinks that we should do.
