ZPNESVI Discussion Thread (Nesse)

The Drezden have been riddling the southern forest with traps for three cycles now. In these woods they will find only pain.

I already have plans for the army when we meet the Cyrians.

The military commanders in my armies, Fire Clan, Bear Clan, Masada Clan will all have their orders soon. By dispatch, I ask that you pick only your most loyal rider to handle dispatches of important matters, to avoid leaking plans to the enemy. (PM or messenger please)

I need the top commanders for each clans, their names please. One for each clan, thank you.

I may just be misinterpreting you, but we aren't marching into battle just yet. There is a lot of careful planning that must be done, and the issue must be drawn before the Senate first and foremost. We don't go to war on whims anymore; we are all truly civilized people now.

The Fire Clan Tuarii (the hit and run force I trained) with their Masadan scouts can harass the enemy far from Nesse. They are stealthy, almost untrackable, and while small in number will be able to deal great amounts of damage on the Cyrians and gain a good deal of information on them before they reach our borders. This will all be passed to the military leadership, and we will be on a better footing to deal with the Cyrians.

Also, we believe that we should maintain a force of extremely fast chariots for the purpose of ferrying troops from reserve lines to where they are most needed in the middle of a battle. These troop-chariots will be able to plug any holes in our line, halt any enemy breakthrough and make our army much more flexible on the field.

The soldiers of the Cyrian Army, having to cross such vast distances, will surely desire the feel of a woman more than perhaps anything else upon their arrival. Several women from the Tusecksii Clan have volunteered to act as spies or assassins for Nesse and work behind the lines in Cyrian army camps.

We are not marching to war, my plan is defensive and only defensive, we cannot beat the Cyrians if we go on the offensive. We make them come to us by marching through the Golden Barbs, possibly the Boar Barbs and then go against our men.
And I have already carefully planned out the battle, as well as several contingencies. We will not allow the Cyrians to advance beyond our lines.
But if local commanders have anything they wish to bring up they can. Local commanders only.

Tusecksii Clan

Your spies are welcome to infiltrate Cyrian ranks and gather information. We wish you the best of luck.

The Justo Clan recommends that a representative of the Senate approach the Boar tribe and request their legions in the coming battle. The Cyrian's have surely approached the Boar with the same proposal as us and the Boar's war bands would be a great addition to the armies of Nesse.

We also believe it would be best to meet the Cyrian's in the open fields on the offensive. If our elites war bands are to be effective they must be used in the open. Then if our armies are defeated the survivors can stand again in the Dresden forests. If defeated again our final hope will be the city walls. We are sure however that the Cyrian's will be easily defeated in the field. Their supply lines are overstretched and their men tired.

To say that you are sure that the Cyrians will be easily defeated would be a grave danger. We must not allow ourselves to become complacent simply due to the fact that we think the Cyrians will be overstretched and their men tired. They destroyed the Hyksoz with ease, and their fort was not too far from Nesse itself. If we are to win victory over the Cyrians, we must steel ourselves for a potentially long and arduous campaign. Anything better then that is a bonus.

We are planning a larger series of walls around Iaeda, giving the town room to grow into a city. We are also planning to build a stone citadel. This will require more stone than we initially thought.

To compensate for this, we have contracted another Outlander Clan to open a quarry near Iaeda. If you were willing to continue working on this more extensive project, we would be open to providing you stone at a discounted rate for use in your other jobs. We hope you find our offer acceptable.

To: Clan Iademos

Our men will be happy to continue working on projects in Iaeda and we thank you for offering us a source of stone at a discounted rate.

From: Silivus
To: Fiddlers

Our men are no alchemists, so even if we had the recipe for this concrete it would be difficult for us to produce it, so we gladly accept your offer. Once you have been able to secure the proper materials and provided it is effective, you will sell us concrete for our building projects. We hope for many years of working with your men ahead.

OOC: I have decided to reorganize the forces, as I am still struggling with the Greek style. Instead they will take a more Roman style, in name only, fighting tactics will still be different to cope with the weapons of the time.

It will be modeled as such:

Cavalry/Chariot Wings= Depends on availability of men and horses. (Daft: Not sure how much is being brought with the Elites or is conscripted into the army. Could you clarify this for me?)
Phalanx= 1,000 men armed with pikes/spears and a small round shield.
Legion= 6 Phalanx's or 6,000 men.
Auxiliary= Allied force of 4,000 men.
Army= Includes 1 or several Legions.

A Cavalry/Chariot Wing is commanded by a Captain.
A Phalanx is commanded by a Centurion.
A Legion is commanded by a Tribune.
An Auxiliary is commanded by an Allied commander (title: Prefect).
An Army is commanded by the War Leader.

Captains report to the War Leader.
Centurions reports to the Tribune.
Tribunes report to the War Leader.
A Prefect reports to the War Leader.

Is this an acceptable military system for you guys? Personally easier for me to track and command.

If I must suggest something again. I must suggest that being defensive by itself will not suffice. As you all know. We stand a fly's chance in hell if we meet them in the open unless we are perfectly sure that the enemy is tired and demoralized. We still call for quick troops and scouts to strike out against their supply wagon and maybe even riddle it with traps.

The Ninticus Clan has been experimenting with having chariots with archers in them so that they may serve as a moving platform while the archers rain death upon the enemy. While we may not have many, if other Elite Clans follow our example we could simply ride past the enemy army over and over again, peppering it with arrows.

House Ìademos believes that if the Senate commits to a declaration of war on the Cyrians, new appointments for War Leader of the army should be made.

The position is intended to be renewed with each major conflict, not to be held in perpetuam.

It has been agreed by the Senate that the position of War Leader is to be reviewed annually, not at the beginning of each conflict. It has been voted unanimously into law.

If you have a problem with the way we are running the army, you are free to meet with Lucius Wolf at the Army camp in the Southern Expanses.

I think it would be proper for the War Leader to show some of their plans to the Senate.

I think it would be proper for the War Leader to show some of their plans to the Senate.

Which I will after I meet with the Allied Commanders of the Bear and Masada Clans and work out a plan to include their forces in the battle.

As it stands the plan only includes the standing army of Nesse, not the Auxiliary troops of the Bear and Masada Clans.

(OOC: Still waiting to see if they will still send their men to fight with us.)

Sokis Onearm will lead the Temple Guard in battle. The House of the Horned King will maintain its own hierarchy of priests to advise and provide comfort for the faithful, whom we have encouraged to join.

We recommend that the defensive and offensive armies be merged under a single command, given the great size of the Cyrian host and the desperate nature of our fight. Rather than letting both be picked off piecemeal, they should confront the enemy together. We ask Moderator Dicchus to nominate a single War Leader to command both armies at once, temporarily.

We'd also like to point out that they still maintain a fortified outpost to the south, where they defeated the Hyksoz.

Alya completely agree with uniting all military units into one major Nessian Army.

The Elites of the city must respond to this pretentious declaration of the Orange Clan on the island of Exiles. Their "Princedom" should be dealt with, if the resources can be spared.

The Exiles should not be allowed to take advantage of Nesse's distraction with the Cyrians.

Why? What hatred has either Nesse or the mighty Ìademos for a peaceful nation on Exile Island? The Orange Clan has never acted against Nesse - you may debate our past, but as we saw it the long-ago actions that saw us Exiled were for the good of the City. Since then we have never taken a hostile action against her. Many of those you call Exiles are much the same - descendants of petty criminals, the wrongfully accused, or long-forgotten political fallouts. None of these actions is worth killing for, and note that these are descendants only!

We have no grudge against the City, but neither do we really wish to join her. All we have done is state explicitly what has been a truth for many years already: Exile Island is not under the jurisdiction of Nesse. It has never been that way, by the City's own desire. Nothing else has changed. The people of Oran, and indeed all of the peaceful Exiles that make up the main part of the Island, have neither the desire nor the means to harm Nesse. We have long governed ourselves, and if we want to make the unofficial official, what reason is there for anger or hate?

Let us be. Neither Nesse nor Oran has cause or true desire to hurt the other.
