Kan does :smug:

Perf, really, do you have all these threads stored on your computer or in your mind for immediate use?
It's a combination of both. This one was stored in my memory.

Would this mean that Celestia would have to update their planets now? ;)

No Celestia is not bound by the decisions of the IAU

THERE ARE NINE PLANETS IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto

Call me stubborn, I'm going to ignore the new planet count.
Dispite the fact that an Object larger then Pluto has been discovered? (and a whole mess of them near the same size)

I say we shoud leave it at nine. I was taught there were nine, I know there's 9, we should leave it at that.

If Ceres isn't as round as a planet, and it's an asteroid, then pretty soon Phobos and Demios would be planets too! Then everything in our solar system, every little asteroid in the belt, Lunar, the space junk left lying by rockets, EVERYTHING will be a planet, even us. I don't want to live in a world where a bunch of idiots in white coasts and large lenses make up what our universe is like? How do you get pictures of your own galaxy when you're living in it!?

I agree completely with you! Screw the new planet count! If someone says there are 12, I'll punch them in the face and say "Too confusing! Leave it at 9 you moron!"

"Planet" is just a term invented by humans to help them classify different things easier. If you must, demote Pluto to the status of "Kuiper Belt Object/Plutons", otherwise we would eventually have 20+ planets, most of which would be small icy rocks at the edge of the solar system.

We all know there are 9 planets. Anymore otherwise would be too confusing for the children. Yet my mother was taught there were 8, but she accepted the fact there were 9. Even if it's determined there are 12 planets, there might be more disputes and then we'll go down to 9 again, or even worse... 8

And right there, ladies and gents, is the proof that the Solar System having 9 planets is no definate thing.

So what should we call UB313, an object that orbits the sun that is BIGGER than Pluto?

Actually Ceres is quite round, however I don't think it should be considered a planet (after all, it is an ateroid)

then pretty soon Phobos and Demios would be planets too!
The folks at at the IAU are screwed up, but not that screwed up!

Don't be silly! The fellas at the IAU aren't gonna make everything a planet, just more then there should be. In all honesty we should just nix pluto as a planet, call it a KBO and move on.

But then what do you say to the kid that says "Why is there an object bigger then Pluto that orbits the sun that isn't a planet"?

Yes, but in my lifetime, I'm used to the fact that there's 9 planets. Any more and I'll have trouble remembering them.

Mercury, Venus Earth, Mars, Ceres, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus (it's a planet!) Neptune, Pluto, Charon, Xena

Oh but Pluto and Charon are so close. One time Pluto might be 9th, but then Charon might. What about Pluto entering Neptune's orbit? Then Pluto would be 8th! Man, this is so confusing!
That's why we should have 9. Charon can't be the 10th because it might be 9th, or even 8th if Pluto enters Neptune's orbit and Charon is up front! See, it's too confusing to list them in order

That's sort of my line of reasoning. Reclassify (I don't call it demotion because KBOs are totally hardcore) Pluto, make one of numerous possible definitions that dissallows for smaller field objects and move on.

But wouldn't it confuse children more that an object bigger then pluto that orbits the Sun isn't a planet while Pluto is?

Just move Pluto to the KBO club and move on! 8 is easy and makes sense. It might confuse kids for awhile, but once it's done kids 20 years down the line won't be utterly confused by inchorent definitions of a bajillion planets.

You're not an idiot, you can make the change from 9 to 8. It's really not that hard!

Well, you get rid of the Pluto being sometimes the 8th planet problem too by just not making Pluto a planet.

Kid: Daddy, what do call an object bigger than Pluto that orbits the sun that isn't a planet?
Daddy: Ummmm...........let me......think.....we call it a "Kuiper Belt Object".
Kid: A Kybberbeltobec?
Daddy: No No! A Kuiper Belt Object.
Kid: That's so long! Can't I call it something shorter?
Daddy: Tell you what? We'll call it a (reads CFC Off Topic post)....um...a...Perfectionoid! End of story.

Yes, but can you be sure Pluto and Charon will be 9th and 10th? They'll be fighting over their position and get even worse when Neptune comes around.

Hey, why does Xena even have to part of our solar system? We can ignore it and say it's part of some other one or is just a floating rock. Problem solved. Then we can say Charon is a moon and Ceres is an asteroid and therefore we have our old 9 back. Besides, children don't know a good remembering saying if Pluto is replaced with Xena. Can you think of a good saying if Pluto was replaced with Xena?
Anyway, ignore Xena, say Charon is a moon and leave Ceres as an asteroid.

Pretty soon, anything big and round will be considered a planet...
