12 planets in the Solar System will be official count on 24th of August

What's with the sudden debate into whether children will be able to get this? I had no problem learning the nine planets, and will have no problem learning the alterations. Children will learn the new system easily, as it's what they're brought up knowing.

Yes, but can you be sure Pluto and Charon will be 9th and 10th? They'll be fighting over their position and get even worse when Neptune comes around.
Yeah, so make Pluto and Charon both not planets and problem solved

Hey, why does Xena even have to part of our solar system?
Same reason Earth does, it orbits around the sun.
Stylesrj said:
We can ignore it and say it's part of some other one
Which one?
Stylesrj said:
or is just a floating rock.
But it's as much a floating rock as Pluto is
Stylesrj said:
Problem solved. Then we can say Charon is a moon and Ceres is an asteroid and therefore we have our old 9 back. Besides, children don't know a good remembering saying if Pluto is replaced with Xena. Can you think of a good saying if Pluto was replaced with Xena?
Well, they're gonna rename Xena, so that's not an issue
Stylesrj said:
Anyway, ignore Xena, say Charon is a moon and leave Ceres as an asteroid.

Pretty soon, anything big and round will be considered a planet...
Well that's the problem, if we let Pluto be a planet then all sorts of other junk should also be planets. So just reclassify Pluto and move on!

Stylesrj, here's a definition of "planet" you'll like:

An object....enough gravity to be round...orbits the sun LARGER THAN 1000 KM IN DIAMETER and ORBITS CLOSER THAN 40 AU FROM THE SUN. This definition effectively cancelled out Ceres while including Pluto in the list of planets. As for Charon, we'll call it a "moon", shall we? Problem solved.

(Any large, round object further than 40 AU from the sun is of course a Perfectionoid ;))

Becasue the children in this thread are demonstrating a significant lack of understanding about the true nature of the issue.

Well, true. But as I say, children will be taught what is a planet and what is not and will grow up with that knowledge. It's up to the rest of us to accept the official definition.

Even if we don't agree with it :p

There will be a huge debate on those 12 planets. And then when everything is reclassified, we'll then have 9 planets again with Xena, Ceres and Charon being demoted

Xena- Perfectionoid
Ceres: Asteroid
Charon: A moon

Well there's a few problems with your definition:
1. It relies on an arbitrary diameter/distance measure
2. It splits KBOs into different populations
3. It doesn't work in other solar systems

You probobly have problems with it because
1. Pluto can go out to almost 50 AU at times, so it often won't be a planet
2. Orcus could possibly qualify as a part-time planet (depends on what its diameter turns out to be)
3. Xena still gets to be a planet every once and awhile
4. 2003 EL61 and 2005 FY9 get to be part time planets

(I love debating children)

Edited for your sake, right?

Ok, I was joking, couldn't you see the joke in it? Sorry, I get too carried away with the "Censoring of bad words thing" that's why I didn't want to say "Should Pamela Anderson's breasts be planets" because I though breast might be a bad word and could get warned for swearing

Hmm, what else do you think is big and round that could be a planet?
Well, the IAU thinks a whole bunch of crap.

I differ. I just stick with the 8 that make sense (Pluto is a piddly little snowball like all the other new TNOs being doscovered so it should get the shaft)

No, if Pluto isn't a planet and we have 8, then what about the pair of planets I put in before I edited it?
They are much larger and have more gravity than Xena :p

Well since you edited them out I really can't compare them to Lucy Lawless'.

(BTW, if I ever get a chance to name an asteroid, I'm totally calling it Xena)

Spoiler :

There, now you can compare them. We'll see which is the bigger pair of planets. We all know they'll be bigger than Xena

Tailless, you had to ruin the fun didn't you?

Besides, those Kuplier Belt Objects (whatever they are called) should be called Perfectionoids as they are much easier to say and is catchy

This was the only one I could find that wasn't covered in clothes or that damned costume:

They seem in the same neightborhood, it's difficult to tell without the same angle, I dunno, maybe Rambuchan can help us.
