14th of June Patchnotes

I am not sure what the trouble is. The game acts fine without my mods on. There have been no issues thus far. Earlier when I had info addict, and the AgS resource info panel on, the other civs I had met, were not building cities. Perhaps they both were choosing not to expand, not sure. So, when I started a normal game everything was fine. Standard map, quick pace, 8 civs and 16 CSs. If I see any issues I will post them.

The only issue I have personally is waiting for the day when one of the random AI civs is not Russia. It is like a street fight every time with that witch! This time I took her capital and then made peace.

Wow. I gotta admit after seeing these rants, I had luckily finished a game only hours before the patch was released. Can't imagine what would have happened to me if the patch downloaded while game was in progress. Now the patch is doing wonders to the advisors - they are actually much more helpful now, not that I needed the advice anyway. :p

Oh yes, quick movement and no intro is another great plus too.

Well this is the worst patch I have come across. Besides being slow slow for turns, it is slow just displaying ruins and new civilizations that show up. Also I find when I click under the options for quick combat, the patch automatic clicks on quick combat AND quick movement even though options have a new box to click for each. Looks like a programming glich for sure.

I would say the programming team was very very inexperienced with the code and how to optimize the code. Might be time to look for some new programmers.

The patch doesn't even look like it was pretested to ensure it was working well..... do they not have testers that are capable to look at flaws.... sounds like all the testers were doing was just trying to get something to play with and not really testing the little flaws. Or if the flaws were tested did the company really look at the reports or just push the patch onto to us.

Quality is really poor for a company that wants to have a good strategy game that will opereate.

I played again without info addict and the resource panel. I think those were causing an issue, because when I started a normal game everything was fine.

perhaps I will try that

Infoaddict is not in the list of Workshop mods, which might mean that the mod author never bothered updating it. Mods break - it happens. Verify that the game works/doesn't work without mods before adding in mods (which may or may not get updated).

and before anyone (else) says it: Modders had time with the beta patch, so they could have taken time to update the mod before the patch.

There are those that have no problems with this patch apparently, performance or otherwise. That usually points to a system (like virus checkers), drivers (esp. video) or configuration issue.

Generally rechecking the config.ini files might help as well. If some logging systems are running (that weren't before) then shutting them off can help (low performance systems anyways).

Plus deleting the cache/verifying the build. I had the dx11 launcher missing after a patch once. Sometimes Steam doesn't quite deliver all of the files.

I tried the game without the mods and actually i only use one mod which stops the banner showing up every turn. The game is still very slow in turns and just not performing like it was before the patch.

Any way to delete the patch and reload it again to see if all the files came down with the patch?

in the Steam app, go to your library and rightclick on Civ 5 - open the properties.

in there you can verify the local cache, which forces it to redownload any files that were missed.

As per that one mod, it's entirely possible that it might not work with the new modding changes (a lot of stuff changed apparently).

I validated the files and it keeps coming up saying one file failed to validate and will be required. So will Steam load the file automatic for me?

I go out and come back in again to the game and verify for the second time and keep getting the same response saying one file failed and will be required.

How do I get to upload the wanted file?

Well reverified and loaded files again in the cache. Still the game is responding slow slow compared to what it was responding before the patch. Any good ideas how to speed it up?

I have set the video settings lower than I had them before the patch but still getting slow response times for the overlays and turn response time. Actually even changing the management screen in the city is responding slow. So the whole game has really slowed down for some reason.

Actually would rather have played the game without the patch.

Hope some of you have found some solutions to the problem. Do like the game but this patch has about made the game getting the worst review for strategy games.

Hope G&K fixes this problem or are we going to see this problem with the G&K?

The problem I have with this is that I place the blame fully on the developers because infoaddict should not even exist!

Infoaddict is almost required to play this game because of the terrible information screens, and lack of even seeing those terrible screens while other leaders ask you random questions. Every time I see a patch that does not have an official version of what infoaddict does, I wonder if anybody building this game has ever played this game.

I've defended this game quite a bit; but this is just a terrible patch: it ruins the saved games of people who cared enough to buy DLC for the game(who shouldn't be required to check civfanatics or 2k forums every 12 hours so they know to avoid a patch), it increased my turn time by 400%, it doesn't include built in infoaddict functions, and it makes me think that all of my excitement for God and Kings was wasted.

Horrible, horrible execution. A horrible execution that we will probably continue to see repeated 5 days from now, when the expansion is released.

Yes this does make you wonder how professional the company is when it comes to developers. The quality compared to other games is very poor when you see patches that come out to fix it that actually makes it worse.

And I'd like to point out that when I say the developers are terrible, I'm not referring to the programmers; I'm talking about their managers.

I'm a programmer, and I can assure you that the programmers did not want to release a patch, and an expansion in the same week. Now they will have two things to fix, and they know that. Those poor guys are going to be working on nonsense for two months because it wasn't done the way they wanted it done. They need make some adjustments to some managers.

Managers may be the ultimate ones for responsibility but still was a programmer who developed the code and operated it. AND why did the programmers not have the code tested and optimized while developing it.

A release of a patch is a team effort that managers and programmers all must take responsibility for such poor work.

I'm also experiencing post-patch super-slow down, not running any mods at all. It's so bad that, to reassign citizens to work new tiles, I need to click where I want them to go, then hit the left arrow to switch to another city, and the right arrow to switch back again, otherwise it won't show me the moved citizen or the new yield. Or if I click on a unit in normal 3D view, it takes about 10 seconds to decide to switch focus to it. Fortunately, it's quicker if you ask it to go to the next unit who needs orders, or use strategic view.

THIS PATCH HAS MADE THE GAME VIRTUALLY UNPLAYABLE!!!!!!!!

Also, can anybody confirm what changes they've made to the courthouse?

I didn't play CiV or read the forums for almost a week and was completely surprised bij this patch which installed automatically. Maybe I'm lucky. I don't experience much of the problems mentioned here. Turntimes are still slow, but I'm in a modern times endplay at emperor level (standard map, standard speed, standard everything). Have to check it in a new game though. Only weird thing is that the Incas became Mongols with Isabella as their leader. For me, this was reason enough to wipe them out immediately! :-)

That's not necessarily the case. If there are only so many programmers and so many hours in the day, and they have to meet a deadline, they simply wouldn't be able to fix all problems. Of course, none of us know where any 'blame' is to lie (and seeing as the source of the slowness problem hasn't been identified yet, for a lot of people it might just be that they're using outdated mods, or have hardware issues, etc., or it could be a Steam issue). Given the speediness of the response from 2K to the questions CFC asked, I know where I'm putting my money.

Ok. I understand. The Patch for Vanilla actually makes the game unplayable so that when G&K comes out, it will run flawlessly and everyone will buy it en masse!

Slick Firaxis... slick.

Customer: Hello, I have problem with my game after last patch.

Mine now crashes with a blank screen when I exit.
I have to ctrl-alt-del to get my screen back, upon which I see "xxx has stopped working" and a button to close the program.

I'm wondering if the various speed-related changes people are observing with the patch are due to them adding multi-core support. Previously I never noticed Civ V using more than one core, now it is. Is this new or did I just miss it earlier?

Just adding my findings.

1) Started a new game, turn times now taking *much* longer. I guess I should quantify this. At a rough guess I would say twice as long to process each turn as I'm used to.

2) Auto-unit cycling not working or working inconsistently. I have it switched on but often I have to manually go to new unit. This might be related to points 1 and 3 of course in that the response/processing time is now much longer.

3) Generally laggy switching between units.

4) Selected the Quick Combat option before starting the game but the game itself had both Quick Combat and Quick Movement set. This has been raised earlier in the thread.

5) I unticked the Quick Movement from the Options screen within the game itself but then when returning to the game it just hung and I had to shut Civ down :(

6) And a general comment on the now busted saved games. There really is no excuse not to have put a more general warning message in Steam. There is a news feed for the game itself in Steam so would it really have been too much trouble to add this info here before releasing the patch as a warning and to explain how to switch off auto updating? This kind of sloppiness would be more acceptable for games that have a quick play time but we all know that a lot of folks have games that last for weeks (and yes even 10 years!) so there's really no excuse in this case.

It's a shame that I'm posting here for the first time to complain because I've loved playing Civ for years. I'm sure that things will get fixed eventually but the slapdash approach to this 'patch' is quite shocking and hopefully is something of an embarassment for the developers.

I noticed the game reset my video settings.
For those having problems starting the game it might be an idea to go into GraphicsSettingsDX11.ini (or GraphicsSettingsDX9.ini if you use dx9) and set fullscreen to 0.
Who knows?

You will find that file in \libraries\documents\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5

Oh dear. I was lucky enough to spot Greg's warning before the patch became available and switched Steam into offline mode so I could finish my game first (my boyfriend was not so lucky; his Korean Turtle Ships turned into Norwegian Ski Infantry  )

I was planning to install the patch as soon as I finished my game, which I probably won't do until tomorrow, but I have to say I'm a bit worried after seeing the issues that people have been having with performance. I play on a 2008 Dell dual-core laptop which gets very laggy late-game as it is and can't handle maps bigger than Standard, so I hate to think what this patch is going to do it. I'm genuinely worried I won't be able to handle G&K either, despite having preordered it weeks ago. :(

Think I'll hold off for now, even when I finish my game, in case there's a fix released. I won't get G&K until Friday anyway so I have plenty of time to try the patch out before then.
