19Delta's ship yard

19Delta isn't posting much because he's off holiday and back to work. But before that I did share my own Iowa model and we managed to find the Kentucky BBG profile on shipbucket. We like to work behind the scenes.

Good to hear it - the various Shipbucket iterations were a lot more 'classical'/closer to real designs than some of the modified variants on Warships Projects.

I was going to recommend some of the pictures from Friedman and Garzke and Duilin, but the Shipbucket pic covers things in much more detail; some of them are of the total missile conversions to BGs, sporting upwards of 500 missiles, which is a bit different from a single end conversion.

I concur on operating behind the scenes; I have rarely posted in this place for quite some time.

Thanks chaps; the outback is not quite the same as the afterlife, though.

The Kentucky BBG notion is an interesting unit idea with definite potential for a number of modern scenarios, particularly those with a mid 50s start date. Some of the proposals fielded IRBMs, others Polaris. Most included Regulus or Regulus II.
There were even some sketches which show a Tartar launcher forward of the main armament, something replicated in some 1980s sketches of reactivated Iowas (in their case, there as a Mk.26). It would have serious blast issues, though, and doesn't really merit enough for it's inclusion.

The rear twin Terrier set up, in the manner of Boston and Canberra, is what has been painted and modelled; Talos would provide a bit more range and bite, which would help justify the expense of a BBG/BG (the latter meaning 'heavy missile ship' to differentiate it from CG).

I think that I'm progressed enough on this model to post a preview. Tell me what you think.

USS Long Beach.jpg

It's not finished yet, but I expect it to be done real soon. Then I will post more images and from different angles.

Who can tell me what this is. Here's a hint: The ship's motto was, "The only real cruiser."

pretty good sofar.

Do neither of you know it's the CGN-9 USS Long Beach?

I didn't know it was the Long Beach, until I held my mouse over the image, and the Image Name popped up USS Long Beach.jpg :)

Tom

I didn't know that the image did that. The next time I want to play a guessing game with a unit, I'll have to name the file, "guess what this is." I wanted to have it done last night, but I don't think it's going to happen. Probably not tonight either. I have come down with the swine flu(kidding) or something and I feel like crap, so I think I'm going to bed now.

Here's an update. I should be done tonight. For now though, I have to take a break because my eyes are starting to go cross and the room seems to be turning on its side for some reason. I will say that this is the best model that I think I've done so far. I dare say that it's better than the Fuso that I built a while back.

I've finished the Long Beach. Here are the pics.

Each one of the tubes on the launcher has a tomahawk inside of it.
USS Long Beach Radar.jpg
I think this is part of the radar system, it was on the pics that I used as reference material to build the model, so it ended up on the ship

I will post my last pic of one of the tomahawk launchers in the next post.

Here is the last pic

This is one of the tomahawk missile launchers
As I said above, each tube has a missile inside of it

I did go a little bit more indepth than I probably should have, but sometimes I get caught up in the moment. Hope you like it. If I missed anything major, let me know so that I can fix it.

When can I get my grubby little hands on it?

The Long Beach is an interesting ship, with a beautifully shaped hull and a ridiculously ugly carrier-like bridge. Your model is excellent, 19Delta. Very good work!

Well I'm back from SPORE'ing and I was up all night messing around with the model. Now it's time to start thinking about animation it.
