2011 MLB Thread

In all honesty, with no fan bias in your opinion, do the Yankees have a shot of winning it all?

It seems they really need to resolve pitching issues and injuries if they want a shot at it

Even with Injuries the Yankees are still and always a team to fear. But i hate them and hope that they get more injuries so it decreases there chances of winning the world series.

I am a fan, but I think even if I wasn't a fan, I would say they have a shot. They have good players, and they always seem to ramp it up come October.

Of course they do. They have one of the two best pitchers in the AL, and a very dangerous lineup. In a short series, where you know CC is going to throw twice, anything can happen. They're one of maybe 5, 6 teams with an actual shot at a title.

I think Cleveland, barring a significant trade (which is unlikely) is going to be done pretty soon. They just dont have enough healthy bodies, especially in the outfield, to keep pace with all of these major AL Central games coming up. No Grady, No Choo, No Carmona, No White...bad news.

Yanks, like nearly every other AL team this season, simply doesn't have the pitching to have a shot at winning the WS. As last year's playoffs and this years ASG demonstrate, good pitching wins games (and more importantly, wins series). The Yanks have a shot at the playoffs, but the NL team, whoever it may be (my bet's on the Phils or the Braves, in all likelihood), is going to be the team to win it all.

I am going to assume you are originally from Boston?

Yeah I grew up near Boston.

The Yanks have the weakest team this season that I can remember them having in a long time. The rotation is very, very shaky. Their bullpen is thin. Their lineup is not the star studded lineup of old and A-Rod is out for a very important 4-6 weeks.

Unfortunately the Sox have similar issues with their rotation...but the lineup is better. If the Sox can get their starters back and healthy again, I think they have as good a shot at it than anyone else thanks to the fact that their lineup is so solid.

any music here from the peanut gallery about the trade deadline stuff?

pence to philly is gaining traction in the local rags. beltran is a douche and a rental. i would want something past '11 and maybe '12. in a perfect world, i would like a LHP RP too. the bandwagon fans here in the delaware valley have really ramped up the pressure for gm amaro. can he top himself again? hard to say. but they surely need a RH bat and some LH help in the bullpen.

Cardinals seem willing to trade Rasmus for some pitching support. Much though I hate trading away someone who raised such high expectations, he is good, not sensational, and we need another starter to keep us in contention and thus (at the margin) selling tickets.

Mets are shopping Beltran and apparently asking for blue-chip prospects in return. I'd personally pass, I don't think Beltran is anything close to what he used to be and at most he would be a rental.

It's looking like the Giants are going to be first in line at wooing Beltran. I hope they don't give up too much to get him. A Keppinger-like trade would be very nice.

Cleveland really needs an outfielder, and they need one fast (especially after last night's game).

Fukudome is a name that seems to pop up in Cleveland trade rumors. I think we're out of the running for the big names (Beltran, Pence, Upton, etc), since the Indians are really built for 2012, 2013, and I don't think they want to give up Kipnis, Crissenhall, White, for a guy they won't be able to control very long.

I read an article on Yahoo! sports last night that had a good point about the Giants. They're in win it all mode right now, even though their offense is absolutely horrible. They're in the unique position of having three to four top-flight starters (Jonathan Sanchez excluded until he learns that the object of the game is to keep runners off base). If they can land a good bat, even if it's a rental, they could lose a top pitching prospect and still have a young, star rotation at least until 2012 with Timmeh, Cain, Bumgarner, and maybe Sanchez if he gets his act together. (Vogelsong is great this year but for the future? Not so sure.)

As it stands the Giants lineup is totally untrustworthy. They need help.

Exactly. If anything screws us up this year it's going to be the injuries. Take away the Sanchez and Posey injuries, and have Pablo not go out for 3 months and we'd easily be in contention for best record in the bigs. A deadline pickup could be just what we need to put us back in contention for the WS.
