2011 MLB Thread

Ha even with like 10 Bloop singles you still can't get the win.

no grace :nono:

i know i've said in the past that there is no such thing as luck in MLB...but tonight, the lucky bounces went philly's way. a timely bennie fresh appearance? i wonder what downtown thinks of this :D that DP in the 8th? fortuitous. this was a white knuckle evening.

Over a season, yeah, I think talking about luck is a bit pointless. While I'm not sure how to describe losing your ace pitcher for the season other than being unlucky, it really isn't a useful description, and can end up with people focusing on the excuses for not winning rather than enjoying the game and season.

In a single game, well, yes it happens. No double play in the bottom of 8th and that brings Pujols up to bat, and while nothing's certain, he was seeing the ball awfully well last night.

That said, I thought Charlie did the right thing to bring Madson in. It was likely going to be the key AB in the entire game, and he brought in his best guy for the situation, not just saving him for the 9th cos he's a closer. Strong echoes of an exchange we had on this forum earlier in the year. By bringing Madson in, Charlie gave himself the best chance of being lucky and getting out of the inning scoreless. So while there is luck, and that play was fortuitous, Manuel maximised his percentages. To my mind, LaRussa didn't maximise his when he failed to pinch hit for Garcia in the bottom of the 6th. Understandable though his decision was, that moment was the Cards' best chance of blowing the thing open - and he passed it up.

White knuckle stuff indeed.

Doesn't matter, he still sucks.

 nice one downtown.

i know we seem to dominate the thread with phils and cards. but man, that was a helluva game. pujols is a super human, i'm convinced. larussa can't be blamed too heavily imo for leaving garcia in there. he was still throwing peas for the most part. switching berkman and craig in the OF was a good move. and i saw how the cards had some interesting no-doubles defenses in the OF early in the game. larussa is cagey.

Yeah, at this point, who else are we going to talk about? Most teams have gone home, and the Hot Stove stuff doesn't really start yet.

I'm happy that he finally got a clutch hit, but I'm happier that I didn't have to eat any shoes this season.

You guys do realise that there are more teams than the Phillies and the Cards.

Are there any Yank, TB, Rangers, or D-Backs fans here? No... didn't think so. So let's go back to discussing the important games to people here.

So we have a robot and the cards have a superhuman. Go Robots!

Erm...C_H is a D-backs fan. Teej likes the Yanks. Frankly I'm pulling for everyone who isn't the D-Backs, Yankees, or Phillies.

I'm a Tiger fan and game five is important to me. I'm also happy that the Ranger's beat the Tampa scum.

Sure, and happy for you (and others) to talk about them. But the Cards-Phils is the series I'm watching, the one I care about, and the one I'm going to post about.

Well maybe they should learn to make some conversion about their teams instead of being silent. Until someone makes a comment about their teams they will be non-existent to me. Why would I bother talking about the irreverence of the AL unless we are speculating WS?

PS: Sorry if I'm coming out kinda condescending it's been a stressful day.

Edit: Uhg I can't believe the Phils right now. Show some plate discipline. I need a facepalm smiley.

For the Lolz terrible stikezone again.

Another absorbing game, and I was having palpitations through the Phillies' half of the eighth...

A lot of quiet bats in the Phils starting line-up at the moment, really since early in the second game, though Rollins and Utley are immense. And I guess the home-cooking was just not to Howard's taste ? (Actually, that said and although I love the place, my trips to St Louis have not been lit up by the city's haute cuisine - with the honourable exception of the crab cakes at Bristols...)

Halladay vs Carp then. A pretty even series to this point, I think.

Yea the Phils' lineup is weak.

CC available out of the bullpen for game 5 tomorrow... Verlander is not :mischief:

If I have to talk about the other series ;), I have to say I liked Granderson's catches from game 4. Maybe the first one he was just redeeming himself from mis-reading the hit initially, but it was still a fine take. The later one was stunningly good. And I was pretty surprised that the Tigers didn't capitalise on Burnett starting - the guy seemed to be a bum two weeks of three, or three weeks of four, when I had him in my fantasy team - just doing enough on an occasional week to make me think he had turned the corner & I should keep him in my line-up. I'm sure he's a wonderful guy, but hearing his name still gives me twitches.

And my Yankees are out. We loaded the bases twice with less than two outs and scored one. We deserved to lose that game. I can't fault the pitching too much, but I can blame the offense. We need guys who can hit with some sort of consistency - this all-or-nothing offense may work over the regular season, but semi-decent pitching in a short series will expose it.
