2013 NCAA Football Thread

Only two weeks till media days . . .

EDIT: ESPN's televising media days live this year, according to twitter. Doesn't really seem like the sort of thing that would benefit from live tv. Kind of the opposite, really. There's something to be said for quality editing . . .

It's awesome for media members that don't get media day credentials (i.e everybody who doesn't work for a broadcast network, radio station or newspaper).

Buuut, 99/100 media days are boring and vapid anyway...

I am in a weird place this upcoming college football season :/

Less than two months out:

Weirdness from Meyer . . .

Virginia joins Kentucky in the 'WTH' recruiting category . . .

And, just like every other offseason, there are plenty of players getting arrested or suspended . . .

Also, for some reason referring to the old Big East as the 'American' conference is really unsettling to me. Not sure why . . .

Headed into the second summer term, every Alabama 2013 signee is on campus except for Robert Foster. That's one or fewer Alabama signees who has failed to qualify every year since the SEC started limiting coaches to 25 signees.

So as expected, the rule has been harmful to players with strong football prospects but marginal academics . . .

Also, LSU's Hill was formally charged yesterday. Misdemeanor assault, like the A&M kids; far less egregious than the dismissed Alabama players. Still -- like A&M's defenders -- Hill remains suspended from football activities. One big difference in the LSU case is that Hill was already on probation. I'd be surprised to see him in an LSU uniform this season . . .

Well, let's look at the bright side, at least college football players are not getting stabbed by referees and fans lynching and beheading the referee in response.....

Since i'm 99% sure i'm going to an ACC school for graduate school (stay tuned!) i'll go ahead and make my ACC picks. Note that i'm not separating by divisions either

1. FSU
2. Miami
3. Clemson
4. UNC
5. VT
6. Louisville
7. NC State
8. GA Tech
9. Wake Forest
10. Virginia
11. Pitt
12. Syracuse
13. BC
14. Duke

Louisville has a legitimate shot to go undefeated with the schedule they have.

Louisville is not playing in the ACC next season, and Maryland is.
I thought that was odd, but I took the ACC guy's word for it :dunno:

SEC Media Days player list. A&M not shielding Manziel, only one other sophomore on the list, Miss State's Benardrick McKinney . . .

EDIT: In recruiting news, Ole Miss beat Alabama for another offensive lineman today, and Vandy keeps beating Tennessee for the in state kids. The world has gone topsy turvy :run:

Johnny Football can handle news conferences well, its twitter that is killing his image...

As you may have noticed, I am an Aggie, so with my Maroon colored sunglasses and A&M hat on, I do think that Johnny Football will be going pro early on us. How early? later than sooner i hope. So here is my dream scenario:

Johnny Football & Co. takes us to our first SEC championship and wins our first National Title since Germany invaded Poland. He declares for the draft and the Texans (not the Cowboys) move up to draft him and begin Operation Phase Out Schaub. Sit behind Schaub for a bit then take over when the timing is right.

Then I buy a lottery ticket and go on an expensive trip to a South Pacific beach! Since it is such a long flight, I will be playing the Brave New World expansion pack on the plane for sure!

:santa2:

And now I gotta get back to work.....

Everyone's cheating.

As for Manziel, it's not that he can't handle a press conference, it's more that I don't think he or the team needs his face out there any more than it already is right now. Surely there is at least one other player on A&M's squad. And I'm not saying it's wrong to bring Manziel, I was just pointing out that that's the way they went . . .

I wonder which of the Ohio state universities have a shot in the MAC.

For what it's worth, both Toledo and Bowling Green should be really good next season, possible fringe top #25 candidates. With Buffalo returning their most experienced roster in years (with at least one probably NFL draft pick), and NIU still returning a lot of talent from their BCS bowl run, I think we'd have another banner year for sweet, sweet midweek #MACTION.

I think the top teams in the MAC and Sun Belt will be really fun next year. I don't think there is much to be excited about for CUSA though.

Speaking about thing that nobody cares about....

The joys of random 52-49 MAC games on Wednesday nights are some of the best parts of college football!

Also, the 2016-2017 Big Ten league schedules were just released, and OSU announced they are fine with only playing 6 home games in 2017, keeping both Oklahoma and a road game with UNC on the slate. Those schedules are about to get a LOT harder.

Nobody cares about media days.

Media days are HUGE in SECland. It's not so much about anything that actually goes on there, it's just that it's the banner event that marks the return of football after months spent wandering in the sports wilderness.

As far as actual news, the spring meetings have been a bigger event the past few years. Also, the spring meetings keep coming later and media days keep coming earlier, so maybe they'll eventually merge the two into one mega event that will wash away all other events in a tide of football awesomeness :mwaha:
