2013 NCAA Football Thread

Media days are HUGE in SECland.

When A&M was in the little ten, I mean the Big 12, sorry, media days were not a big deal at all and not much came out. Now that we are in the SEC, everyone's talking about it here and its a big deal to us now. Even our athletic website posts clips form the media days when in the past they didn't.

Just supporting ummmm........'s point :D

Yeah, I don't really get it. I've never covered SEC media days before, but I have for two other conferences and an independent, and the only one who actually broke any real news was BYU, and that was all nicely done in the first 40 minutes. I'm sure the ol' ball coach will say something deliciously troll-ish, but student-athletes so rarely give interesting quotes, and I'd be shocked if many other coaches say things that we haven't really heard before.

I admit though, I'm pretty biased against most major athletic conference press conferences in general. The only really nice thing about media days is that it gives me a chance to hang out with other writers that I like.

It's getting to the point now where I don't even like that Manziel and McCarron are associated with each other . . .

Day 1 complete!

The news:

-- Archie Manning's father committed suicide during the summer between Archie's sophomore and junior years. Archie discovered the body and cleaned up before his mother and sister got home to see it. How did we not know this?

-- Muschamp and Meyer do not like each other.

-- Jadeveon Clowney runs a 4.46 forty. I want proof . . .

EDIT: I think two of today's teams -- Florida and Ole Miss -- will be better than last year's teams but finish with worse records. Cliches are cliches for a reason . . .

South Carolina is probably my pick to win the East. Both Georgia and Florida are probably better, but schedule favors SCAR . . .

Muschamp wore a gold and purple tie :WTH:

One of Driskel's goals for the year is a 3-to-1 TD/INT ratio. McCarron managed 10-to-1 last year . . .

Clowney on playing Manziel: "I want to see what the hype's all about." They won't actually face each other unless they both win their respective divisions . . .

I remember a time when Spurrier didn't make this distinction between 'Ol' Ball Coach and 'Head Ball Coach'. The things that age will do to you . . .

Spurrier says he played multiple QBs in half of his eight conference championship years . . .

Clowney being held up as the anti-Manziel. Fair comparison . ..

Spurrier: "Our fans would rather we beat Clemson than anyone else on the schedule." See? South Carolina's still weird . . .

Okay, that's it. Manziel and A&M show up in five hours and eleven minutes. Bars close at 2am in B'ham, so we should be fine . . .

Day 1 complete!

The news:
-- Jadeveon Clowney runs a 4.46 forty. I want proof . . .

Steve Spurrier and Gamecocks fans are claiming this. I agree, I have yet to see any proof besides third person hearsay from say like, a random student walking by. I have a hard time believing it actually happened, but we'll see.

Day 2 news!

-- Manziel's phone died. No, really. And the dog ate his homework. And he left his ID in his other pants. The worst of it for an Alabama fan is that now McCarron will have to spend part of his time tomorrow talking about the Manziel situation and why he didn't wake him up, or, more to the point, which one of them wasn't in the room that morning.

-- Speaking of McCarron, his tweet regarding the ESPYs highlights the difference between him and Manziel.

McCarron said:
You're right I'm not at the espy's! I don't have to be at a award show to know what my team did. I'm back at school working to get another

Now, my understanding about most of these award shows is that the nominees are informed ahead of time whether they're going to win so only the winners need to actually show up. Manziel won something and McCarron didn't so McCarron didn't need to be there. But it was still smart of him to use the opportunity to create that public message.

McCarron and Manziel are buds. I'm sure McCarron's doing a lot of the same crap that Manziel is doing, and I'm sure it has impacted his focus or preparation at some point. But because he is more mature or savvy about the face he shows publicly, he can get away with it while Manziel gets hounded.

When asked by reporters at the Manning camp what he wanted to learn or take away from the experience, McCarron's answer was that he wanted to learn from the Mannings how to deal with public perception when all eyes are on you. Manziel doesn't seem interested in that. And McCarron gave that answer before the Manziel incident arose.

-- The NCAA will no longer license a video game. EA will continue to make the college football series, but they will have to contract with individual schools for licensing rights if the schools are willing.

-- The playoff committee will consist of some or all of 'Big Five' ADs, former players, former coaches and media members. Commissioners will not be eligible. Seems odd to me to allow ADs but not Commissioners, but whatever. The current thinking is that the committee will meet maybe three to five times, and may or may not release 'standings' after each of those meetings. Everything's still pretty much up in the air

EDIT:

-- Manziel on Clowney: "I think I could get away from him"

-- Manziel said Texas A&M brought in two counselors to help him identify stress triggers. I remember during the Franchione years there was a D-lineman at Alabama who was missing classes, late for practice, locker room problem, etc., and it turned out to be sleep apnea. He had surgery on his soft palate and did a 180º. The level of pressure these guys are under is incredible, but so is the level of care they receive . . .

-- Miss State ends the season with SCAR, A&M, Alabama, Arky and Ole Miss. No bye week.

-- Of everybody I've heard talking about the playoff format, Dan Mullen is the best at rationally pointing out the foibles. It's not better, just different :dunno:

-- Tennessee's Tiny Richardson on the odds of a UT resurgence: "Before Bama turned it around they were terrible. ... I mean dead terrible. So why can't we be the next team that blows up?" I mention this because people frequently seem to forget how bad we were pre-Saban. Lost to La-Monroe in Saban's first year . . .

-- Malzahn on the player safety issues on the defensive side of the ball that may arise from up tempo offenses: "When I first heard that I thought it was a joke." I have to agree. Up tempo offenses are bad for college football, but only because they marginalize the mental side of the game. The safety issue that Saban and Bielema have concocted is pure fabrication . . .

-- Bielema on recruiting and off-field issues: "You recruit the problems you have." Brilliant.

-- McCarron is scheduled to show up in eight hours. Hopefully he's not counting on Manziel to wake him up . . .

Ah, I typed it all out and then closed it by mistake while I was reading another tab.

Anyway, the last day of media days was today. It was Alabama day, and it was good. Saban and Franklin did a better job arguing against up tempo offenses than Bielema did yesterday. McCarron did a very good job of deflecting the Manziel questions. Saban did a great job of describing the paper thin margins that separate a champion from an also ran over the course of a season, and how absurd preseason prognostications are for that very reason. It was a good day. You should go read about it.

Six weeks till football; two weeks till fall camp. Roll Tide ! ! !

EDIT: Neat story from Saban about McCarron's early time with the Tide:

Saban said:
“I can remember the very first scrimmage we had when A.J. was on our team for 11 days,” Saban said. “He thought he should be on the second team and we played him on the third team. He came fussin’ and kickin’ and cussin’ up to my office after the scrimmage because he was disappointed he didn’t play with the second team. He didn’t do a very good job of leading the players that he did play with, which was the third team. He was kind of fussin’ and frustrated.
“He said, ‘Why didn’t I play with the second team?’
“I said, “We were only evaluating on one thing today and that was leadership, and you failed dramatically.’”

Saban also said the team came in to spring camp with poor focus, entitled attitude. But the work ethic returned by the end of spring ball. I wonder . . .

I like what I hear from Franklin. It will be interesting to see whether he or Sumlin leaves for a better job first. They are definitely the rising stars in the SEC HC ranks.

When Mack Brown leaves Texas after this year, I think the new coach will either be Franklin or Art Briles

I doubt Mack Brown leaves Texas. Too prideful. At worst he gets the RC Slocum treatment. Unless Texas goes winless.

If Texas finishes outside the top 2 in the Big 12 this year, he is absolutely getting fired. Expectations are sky high for the program this year, and given the complicated internal politics at the university, his defenders at the school may not be long for the world.

This actually isn't the first time I've heard Franklin to Texas this week. I wonder if it would be too much to soon. I'm not sure his gameday skills have caught up to his rest of the week skills yet . . .

On that note, are there any coaches that you are legitimately shocked they have or still have a FBS head coaching job? I can only think of a few at the major power level. There are a whole lot of more college basketball coaches that i'm shocked have a job still.

A lot of those guys survive not because they deserve it, but because their AD has to consider not just their performance but who he could reasonably expect to get as a replacement. Proven guys tend not to make lateral moves, so unless you're a traditional power with a lot of resources you're not attracting a proven head coach. Assistants are always a gamble.

And then you have to consider that the coach is just part of the puzzle. Saban was a proven guy when he came to Alabama, but there was nothing that he did at Michigan State or LSU that would have predicted his current run. It's a confluence of many factors -- including luck -- that brings a team success . . .

I think Tim Beckman was staggeringly incompetent last season and will probably be fired this year, but it isn't hard to see how he got the job at Illinois, given his performance at Toledo.

I can maybe go if a complicated series of natural disasters and scheduling conflicts forces the game to be relocated to Legion Field. Maybe. Don't get me a ticket or anything . . .

Anyway, lots going on with barely more than five weeks till kickoff . . :

The other Big Four are holding their various media day(s) this week. So far, revamping the NCAA and/or FBS, the perils and pitfalls of up tempo offenses and the new targeting rule seem to be common threads from the conferences that have already begun. The media has picked OSUs to win the Big Ten and XII, but that trend will probably not survive through Friday . . .

Here's Paul Finebaum leading a discussion about up tempo offenses with Richt, Miles and Sumlin from yesterday's ESPN Car Wash thingy. It's actually a good summary of the intelligent points from both sides of the argument, but the fun part is watching Finebaum squirm. He's been doing interviews for a long time, but it's obvious that tv is new to him . . .

And if you're really hard up for some actual football talk, this is Smart Football's breakdown of Saban's one football-related bit from ESPN today. It's like an oasis in the desert . . .

Anybody else following along at home, or are you all waiting for practice to start . . ?

Black Monday for OSU. Carlos Hyde, their leading rusher, was indefinitely suspended for his role in an assault in a club, and will probably be kicked off the team. Bradley Roby, a preseason All-American in the defensive backfield, as arrested in a separate incident and will likely garner some sort of suspension. 1 freshman was kicked off the team, and another suspended against Buffalo.

The only real crisis there is with Roby (the team can't go undefeated without him), but probably losing Hyde for the full season is a big deal.

I'm at B1G media days tomorrow, if anybody has any questions.
