2019 Christmas Thread

I'll bite... Why?
I had to make some dietary changes after my hospitalization last January. At the time I hadn't realized it would include no more egg nog. :(

But what's worse is that somebody gave me cocoa for Christmas and I can't have that anymore, either.

One of the biggest class divides is whether December and early January means a period of minimal work winding down towards zero work, or having heaps more work and stress than normal

(I've taken just two days of recreational leave split into four half pay days, to cover me from this Saturday through to Jan 6, a nice two week break to hide from this bloody heat and watch cricket)
So this is interesting. How do you think that plays out for most people? Are you saying lower class people have a more or less stressful holiday period?

Congrats on your break!

Lower income people probably don't get as many days off. I know for me we shut down for an entire week. So I technically get 4 weeks vacation but I have like 10 days of paid holidays. Most white collar jobs get a few extra days off while I imagine if you work in retail or at walmart or something you probably have to take unpaid holidays. Idk, probably depends on the place.

Yup, just depends. Wife usually has to work Xmas. Doesn't have to this year though! Does have to work NY. Anything classified as services seems to be sort of lolholidays.

I'm high enough at my bank to be able to have plenty of time off, and I barely work during the holidays. But I know my coworkers who answer phones will be working 24 hours on Christmas Day. I think most of it's because of the internet: since people can shop at all times, then credit cards have to always be available, and physical stores need to stay open to try to compete.

I think certain services should be open on holidays....but the vast majority should be closed.

I think Amazon should close down their site on Christmas.
And their warehouses!

My friend recently had to go to one of their warehouses for his work (he works for Amazon in tech, he's not a warehouse worker) and he said it was horrible across the board. He couldn't wait to get out of there.

Look to Norway, as a nation we are experts at finding excuses for not going to work. I believe we are only bested by Iceland when it comes to annual days off work. Working too much is bad for productivity you know, can't risk that!

For people who are older, was stores and restaurants being open on Xmas a common thing? By the time I was a young adult it was firmly established and I feel like it was a relatively new thing in the late 90's but can't be sure.

Although I do have a neighbor who is a nurse and they love working holidays because the pay is triple time. Honestly my wife would kill me but I would work Christmas for triple pay haha. Kids are up at 5am anyways, and I wouldn't start until 9.

We used to get 3% bonuses but haven't in a few years cus financials, yadda yadda, idk that's all sales stuff not my end. But think about it, 3% of 2080 hours is ~62 hours, so I could make up 38% of my old bonus in one day of work!

When I was really young, nothing short of the emergency room at the hospital was open on Christmas. It was considered just wrong.

Hey, similar to my little corner of South America, but for the completely opposite reasons and therefore with completely opposite effects!

That at least was a good thing about the old days.

When I was a kid nothing was open on Xmas but the hospital and Chinese restaurants. Seriously... all the local Chinese restaurants were always open on Christmas.

*In CinemaSins voice* "Thaaaaat's racist" *ding*

But yeah, like A Christmas Story... minus the singing:lol:. I actually never had to go out for Chinese at Christmas, I just remember that if you went out to visit family/friends or sledding or whatever you would always see the restaurants open... or if people came over they would comment that they saw every Chinese food place open on the way over.

Is it? It's certainly poking fun with racial stereotypes but there's no malice in it. While I don't think malice is required for something to be racist, it is usually indicative. To me it's just a joke but I'd like to read your perspective on it.
