2019 Christmas Thread

Some church in SoCal I think showed a manger scene with Joseph, Mary and Jesus all separated from each other in 3 cages.

Jonathan Morris condemned it as a betrayal of what Christians cherish or hold sacred...or something like that

I don't know who Jonathan Morris is, just hope he does not hear about this

Well as promised. here is a picture of our tree. You'll note there are no ornaments on the tree yet. We will wait until next week to put them on to protect them from

To protect our tree we have large base bolted to a 4x4 piece of 3/4" plywood so they can't topple it. We have also put sharp screening around the base to discourage them from drinking the water or using the base as a launching point up into the tree. This does not deter them enough. We also don't add the skirt around the tree till the day before since they will tear it to shreds. Last year we found them about 2/3 the way up the tree. The branches get a bit thiner by the top to support them. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO OUR KITTY ANGELS.

Wait till we put the skirt around the bottom and add ornaments. Of course it won't be our nice one, but simple plastic ones. We may put a few nice ones near the top which hopefully will be out of reach. The things we do for our beloved pets. Our friends always laugh at our "barb wire" type screen around the bottom.

I'll be decorating mine this weekend. It'll be purple, pink, and gold.

Decoration your christmas tree before the 23rd is a capital offence in my neck of the woods.

That's why you'll be moving here instead of me moving there. Who has time and energy to bring culture and civilization to such barbarity? :p

If we wait that long to buy a tree, we'd end up with a Charlie Brown tree.

Fair play. But we're still watching that weird old british comedy sketch on the 23rd. If not the norwegian christmas police will find me and execute me.

edit: oh and we're obviously opening presents on the eve of the 24th :smug:

I always watch It's a Wonderful Life on the 23rd, my tradition.

Oooh what are everyone's must-watch Christmas movies?

Mine:
  • Love Actually
  • It's a Wonderful Life
  • Home Alone
  • Mrs Santa Claus
  • A Christmas Story
(and no, Die Hard is NOT a Christmas movie!)

Nonono it's gotta be weird Czechoslovakian christmas adventures from the seventies with awkward dubbing!

There are chistmas trees in my neighborhood since about a month ago.

There is no xmas in which The Ten Commandments is not televised.

norwegian police: you're charged with murder
me: they were decorating an xmas tree in november
police: ok we're gonna let you go but try not to do that anymore

Blasphemy
Every time I've seen a poll on this, Christmas movie always wins.

Heck I think there was more violence in Scrooged.

I don't really like Christmas movies, probably because they are almost exclusively comedies and I don't really like comedies. I love dramas, action movies, sci fi. But a few are at least watchable:
-Elf. This one was actually quite good but I've seen it too many times it's gotten stale.
-How the grinch stole christmas, any version, original cartoon, jim carrey one or the next CGI one. All decent.
-The Santa Claus cus Tim Allen is awesome
-Bad Santa, adult level comedy
-Home Alone. Good movie, rewatched it with my kids and they loved it.

But Christmas movies would not be my goto. I'd rather sit down and watch something long that you don't usually get a chance to like Godfather movies or Lord of the Rings trilogy or a Star Wars marathon or something.

Just FTR, I grew up in the UK, and never saw this sketch -- until 2006, when I moved to Germany, where it's also a Christmas TV-staple (at least in my wife's family).
