I've seen elsewhere that Americans may not be watching much because it's in China.

Can someone give me a short rundown of why that's the case?
Does this go to trade war, spying, IP ripoffs and the like? I'm not up on the details .

They tried to throttle us in AU with unilateral dodgy trade embargoes with rubbish reasons and all of the other above, but I haven't heard of anyone not watching tv because of it.

Lithuania now also calling China on threats, but I don't know what that's got to do with the Olympics.

I have not watched it because of the Uyghur thing. I am not at all convinced it makes any difference, and feel I should tell someone but emailing the CCP seems a bit pointless.

Indeed. I've been on about injustices oppression lying and outright bullshet for close to 40 years but not watching FTA tv in my own home as a protest isn't going to be noticed by anyone.

Politics, most probably.
Here, the interest is usual for Winter Olympics, they are quite popular.

I don't have cable, so wouldn't watch it anyways. Sure, maybe I could stream it on internet somewhere, but no events really intrigue me to bother.
So it's only available on 'cable' ? That would certainly account for a major factor here. 'Cable' never really worked here so I m not familiar with the whole thing. The FTA network with the rights here has it on multi channels. about 12hrs a day plus the network's net/app.

The link says it's 'mysterious and multifaceted ' but then basically goes on to say a big part of the reason is antipathy toward China. I'm interested in how ppl there generally have developed the feeling of China as an enemy.

General negative sentiments here were greatly increased with the above mentioned economic pressure. Their on going belligerence politically certainly raised public awareness but I haven't heard much about it stopping ppl watching sport.

Nope, not watching it here either. No money for the chicoms when I can help it.
How does watching it send money to them? Is it because its on cable and the cable knows how many are watching thus supporting buying the coverage rights?

Watching FTA here no one knows what I'm watching so not watching doesn't achieve anything.

Your opposition to 'Chicom' is rooted in what? I've been opposed to their various areshole behaviour for decades. Interestingly even Mao Tse Tung warned against 'Han Chauvanism ' in the 1950s.

It's on NBC. I guess I could get it with a (digital) antenna, but haven't bothered. Should get around to trying to get one set up for other stuff (NFL games). Netflix is all I need to spend for TV.

I also have an axe to grind against the IOC—international olympic conmen! They’re nothing more than a bunch of shakedown artists. Thomas Bach can kiss my hiney.

The most personal to me being their complicity in spreading if not creating the killer coronavirus.

This is a really good point. The IOC is a private company, and somehow controls the destiny of all the worlds elite athletes in the most openly corrupt manner, and considering they are competing with Sepp Blatter that is saying something.

They only have this power because we give it to them, right? There is no law that the IOC get to define elite sport, if "we" set up an alternative organisation with transparency and environmental responsibilities as their foundations and watch the events organised by that then the IOC would be left with nothing. So why do we put up with this corruption and exploitation?

May be because it is presented in TV as an event of national interest ?
Well, maybe, but from my reading of this thread no one here (except perhap E.man?) actually watches broadcast TV any more.
