3. open game: giaurs game (deity domination with starting bonuses)

@ Giaur:

I just checked, via the worldbuider, and my deity AI´s also start with one settler only...

I would continue this game as it is, because everybody seems to have the same settings (and because it fun to play)

We can do a "proper" deity game later...

I imagine this "proper" game will be SpaceRace again :/. It would be difficult to win by C/D, cause not all will be dependant from us. Just the matter of luck. If you fail to expand in Ancient era (cats, swords), you can say goodbye to Conquest.

edit: We can make such kind of game, but I propose it would be an optional game, since many players would find this level too difficult.

I tried a deity game at the moment. I got Ramses spi/ind. And both traits were suck. First, I could not even dream to found an early religion. Second ... Stonehenge was built 2500BC. Oracle, GW ... 2200BC. Not by me OFCZ. Some traits are just completely useless on this level. That's why this level should not be played. But maybe I was doing sth wrong. I never had enough patience to play peaceful game on this level. And when I get peaceful traits I retire quickly ...

:D IF we should do a deity game without any advantages for the human player, I would make sure that:

- We pick a map like the one we had in this game (pangea like sneaky continents with enough expansion space)

- Fredderick as leader (phil/org is great)

When you manage to build 6+ cities and to get lib around 400 AD (should be possible because of good traiding options on deity) you stand a fair chance. Going for far with cav/gren is fairly easy then and to take out 1-3 civs in a quick war (I played some deity games I won with this taktics, even on standard continents)

EDIT:

@ Galileo:

I just saw that you changed your sig...:D

another try ... GW 2500BC. This level is killing me.

Snaaty: maybe Archipelago. Elizabeth is good too

edit: I saw this change quite long ago ;)

@ Giaur:

Don´t go for the early wonders, the AI´s will always beat you (they use one city to produce settlers etc, the other is quite often starting a wonder ASAP)

Try the GL later (even without marble) and expand ASAP... ...this is the best strat I found to be...

EDIT:

Oh, and most important, MOVE your initial settler to a good blocking location (maybe this is the most important of all)

The trouble is I am addicted to Wonders, Religions. This level destroyes the whole strategy and beauty. Besides I did deity few times and I can't stand this no more. Lower difficulties gave me more. This level is so trivial.

edit: I would say it is kind of penalty to play on this level

edit2: 'penalty' or 'punishment', I do not know which word better fits.

Despite what was otherwise a really good start, I've ended up going back to the beginning again, thanks to a combination of:

1) incompetent city placement (I now know just how unforgiving Deity-level maintenance is).

2) horribly bad luck (my chopper died in an attack on a longbow, at odds of more than 95%, the first time I tried to attack an AI city  ).

My second attempt:

Spoiler :

Domestically, I tried to follow exactly the research/build path that served me so well on my first attempt, and duly grabbed the GW and used the GE for the Pyramids. However, I missed out on Confucianism and the GL (both of which I got on my first go), although my 2nd and 3rd cities are much better this time around. I've also added the Parthenon to my collection of wonders, to help keep those GPs flowing.

For the gunship, I decided that more experience and an early thrashing of my nearest neighbours might be more effective than the hut-hunting I tried the first time around. I attacked Saladin and then Wang, destroying all of their units (including workers) and pillaging all of their improvements. For the most part, this has proved to be a successful strategy; both of them are still quite weak in 1ad, although I have missed out on tech-trading with them, helping Catherine and HC to race ahead.

My next move is to take advantage of Wang's weakness (before he gets longbows  ) to grab myself some more land to the east, and to weaken him for future conquest.

If anyone wants to look at the save and give me some advice/criticisms, I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm going to lose this game for sure, but I think I'm beginning to understand the nature of high level play a bit better, and learning a few lessons that I can put into practice when I go back to playing at Emperor.

I´m also quite bussy right now... ...so I play in quite short turnsets here and there.

So far, I reached 300 AD:

Spoiler :
Well, I proceeded with my warmonger aproach. I also decided to finish of Kathy completely and razed her last city. So I had 7 cities captured and 2 cities built up to 200 BC.

I built 2 more cities up to 300 AD and captured 3 more cities from Huyn Capa... ...plan is to contiune the war against him

I'm taking a break off the game for some time. You've done a very good job already Snaaty with these open game challenges,i've really enjoyed them. i hope you'll keep them up, i might join in again later but right now i'm just a bit fed up with the game.

It's time to make a writeup. Shame so few player accomplished this task :(

edit: I am fed up with the game too. But it's much easier to play an open game than game for my own purpose. I will see how long I will stand.

Seems like everybody is dropping out...

Standing so far:

Giaur:
1000 AD

Snaaty (me):
300 AD

Muti, Winston:
1 AD

...

I don´t think it´s worth making a writeup, because only Giaur has reached the first checkpoint so far (I also don´t have too much time playing right now)

Well as I said, I gave it a try, but I just didn't feel like it was a 'real game' with the chopper. So with no disrespect I will wait for the next game to have a go on a harder difficulty with you all.

I'm playing--up to 800 AD. Seems like I ought to be able to win from here.
Spoiler :
took out Korea first then working on HC. HC will be done shortly. Settled in place and built WB, WB, GW and got it. Research mas first. Took about 85% chance for the eng and built GLib--surprisingly just missed pyramids. Got beat to lib by one turn--within a couple of techs of the leaders. Heli has 167xp--went combat4-blitz-drill 1-4 (somewhere in there a warlord and leadership) then combat 5,6.

I'm clear that I can't play on anything resembling a real deity tho. How about another immortal next time. Not sure if I'm going to finish this--it will take a lot of RL time.

I also played one more turnset last night, up to 680 AD

Spoiler :
I continued my war against Huyn and took 2 more of his cities (he has 2 cities and an iceland-outpost left). Initially, I wanted to finish him completely, then turn towards Wan, to reduce him greatly before 1000 AD (and before he reaches something that can counter a gunship...). But then Ragnar (who was pleased) backstabbed me and declared. I stopped to play the turn he declared... ...I´m not well prepared for this war, because my empire is huge and all my troops are at the other end.. ...but I think with some whipped longbows, I can hold him off long enought (and then reduce him, not Wang:mad:)

All in all, I´m winning quite easy (2 civs destroyed, one down to 3 cities). I own already about 45% of the map

At this rate I might be finished by 3000ad...

Spoiler :

It's taken me a thousand years to take three more cities from Wang (I kept two and built one more). I stopped the war a few turns ago to extort a tech and some cash, but I'll be starting it again to take the remaining cities as soon as the ten turns is up.

I was beaten to Liberalism by an unknown civ (which turned out to be the Vikings) in 540ad, shortly after I'd beaten all of the other civs to Paper. Since then I've fallen further and further behind, although Cathy (who's always been my arch enemy in previous games) helped me out by gifting me Nationalism without being asked!

Winning this game now looks like a case of surviving long enough to get to nukes; lots and lots of nukes. :nuke:

The most significant question is 'which will give up first: me or my PC?'
