4th Cumulative WW2 Quiz

From where comes the nickname "Katiusha"(Катюша) of the Russian artilery system БМ 13 ?

Doesnt Katyusha mean little Kate or little Katherine?

The one thing i remember reading (in a Panzer General Instruction book no less) is that it was related to the famous popular song "Katysha".

I found Panzer General in a 2nd hand bin last week for $5. Can't get it to run though as its an old DOS based game. Hopefully my computer geek frined cn get it to run this weekend. Got a hankering to invade France.

DOSBOX or IIRC PGwin95 version.
(Iam tempted to load up my copy)

Beevor mentions that the name derives from a popular WW2 song about a girl longing for her loved one who is serving in the military, and she promises to keep their love alive in her heart. Some soviet soldiers nicknamed the German counterpart Vanyusha (little Ivan) and joked about what would happen if Vanyusha tried to marry Katyusha.

Success got Panzer General to work. Haven't played it for 7 years but I can still defend moscow vs the Germans on hard and the eastern front in 44 and Berlin 45. Geekus Maximus:)

Its still a good game considering it was released in 94.

 Didn't know that part.

Certainly one of the classics. Steel Panthers is a rare gem too.

Always wanted to play that one. Own Panzer Commander, Panzer General 1,2,3, and Peoples General.

Try downloading Steel Panthers World at War from Matrix Games. Its an updated version of the original game that should work fine with modern PCs.

Sadly no-one has ever produced an updated version of Steel Panthers 3 which covered brigade sized battles.

Yeah, definately must try. Too bad I just played maybe even too much the original so now it feels bit old.

I personally would had liked to see even more updated version of Steel Panthers with updated graphics from 3/4 perspective.

And also I think Steel Panthers would had been nice to be updated as well. Some of those battles were just crazy.

But this is so much OT that we're going to get hanged by the mod crew if we don't stop.

make it part of the quiz:p

What WW2 strategy gme by SSI rstarts with P second word G and requires an explaination of Steel Panthers?

See easy.

A little piece of my heart died when SSI went down. I have PG & AG(for both DOS and PS1), Panzer Commander, Star General, PG2, PGIIID and PGIIII. I lost People's General in a move years ago or that would be on the list as well.

I gotta find a DOS emulator and try out Star General again, I havent played it in years.

But to keep it on topic, days to weeks wasted on all the various PG games have the german equipment names (and most of the US & USSR) burned into my memory.

Since nothing has happened for a while, I am going to try and "revive" this with a new question.

Who was the Commander-in-Chief of the OKW since 1938, signed the Commissar Order (which had Communist Party officials executed as soon as they were captured), and was executed after being found guilty in the Nuremburg Trials?

Hint: Other officers nicknamed him Lakaitel, which means "the nodding ass" in German.

Keitl was known as both Lakaitel and the nodding donkey but I don't think that it translates directly to nodding ass but rather little lackey.

Wilhelm Keitel is correct. My reference, Illustrated History of the Third Reich by Alex Hook, says Lakaitel means "the nodding ass", but I know Lackey is Lakai...so they may have fashioned the name so it was more personal and a bit more insulting.

Privaehudson gets it.

Which highly successful British operation had code names for its various forces that included Nelson, Jellicoe, Hardy and Rodney despite the Royal Navy not having made any contribution to those 4 forces?
